martk the shark

Background: He is Mark The Shark and he is a member of the Razor Claws -team. They play seabed soccer in the Ocean cup. Their team current rank is 5th.

I didn’t plan anything at all before I started to draw this. And it’s obvious.

Grid, the living football

Maybe the result of a mad scientist? Who knows? Grid sure doesn’t- he is not that smart! I will probably add him to my Capt. Punishment ( and his Indestructible Yardstick of Justice!) in the future.

#6 – Rosie Richards

Rosie Richards of The Majors

Rosie Richards is the head of operations for the Motor City Majors. She has acted as the executive board’s advisor for the last 8 years, but was never promoted to be an actual board member due to Abraham Arnold’s staunch misogynist ways. Now that the old man has passed on and fresh blood has entered the organization, Rosie is finally getting the credit she deserves. She has her work cut out for her by trying to keep Alex in check and getting Eddie up to speed with the day-to-day workings of an elite level franchise. Her determination, passion for the game and natural business instincts keep the team running and save the Pratt brothers from looking foolish as newbie owners.

Billy Lincoln of The Majors

I know – I’m WAY behind on this one. I’ll do my best to play catch up in the next week or so.

This is Billy Lincoln. He is the cartoon equivalent of RIM CEO Jim Balsillie, who unsuccessfully tried to relocate 3 teams back to his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Known for trying to make underhanded deals that circumvented the NHL’s policy on franchise ownership, Balsillie made a lot of enemies in his short time as a potential suitor for team ownership.

I decided to take the character one step further and make him an absolute slimeball. Billy Lincoln is a corporate tycoon who seeks to pluck the Motor City Majors from the Arnold family and relocate the team back to his hometown. He tries a number of different plans which are foiled by members of the Majors organization. He will end up acting as the foil to the Pratt brothers, and will be a thorn in their sides on many occasions.

#16 – The Widowmaker (GWP)

| November 17, 2011 | 4 Comments

I hate that I’m a day behind. And I hate that I have no idea what’s next.

This is the last of my Galaxy Wrestling Pro characters. It only figures that I’d have a “monster” type in there (like the Undertaker or Kane). Thing about him is he’s the most human of all the Earthlings. He takes the mask off, the character is kept for the arena. When the match is over, and he gets backstage, he is just himself. The others…they are always on. ‘Maker is all business when the cameras are rolling. He desperately wants to get back home to his family.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

Tomorrow…a surprise for all of us!

#15 – The Mysterious Stranger (GWP)

| November 15, 2011 | 2 Comments

Of course I have a luchadore! Are you kidding?

Stranger here is inspired by some of my favorite Mexican wrestlers (Rey Mysterio Jr, El Santo, Mil Mascaras…I could go on). He was originally going to be called, “El Extranjero Misterioso,” but I thought that might be a little much. I was going to give him oddly colored skin, but I didn’t want anyone to think he was an alien right away…if he is one.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

#14 – Mighty Minerva (GWP)

| November 14, 2011 | 0 Comments

I think women’s wrestling gets a bad rap. There’ve been tons of great women wrestlers…Fabulous Moolah, Beth Phoenix, too many to name from Japan. Mighty Minerva’s name calls to mind Magnificent Mimi and Medusa Micelli, to me. As far as her ring attire, I didn’t want it to be so…obvious. The cape would come off pre-match, but I didn’t intend for her to be wearing what amounts to a bra and sleeves. They are meant to be attached.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

#13 – Major Victory (GWP)

| November 13, 2011 | 0 Comments

I always hate that patriotic wrestlers are always white dudes. I think the only African American patriotic wrestler was GI Bro, aka Booker T (arguably, you can say that Tony Atlas was as well, but that’s grasping at straws to me). I’m a big fan of taking expectations away from certain conventions. Major Victory, the name, is based on the public domain superhero…in fact, you can see that I did my best to translate his ring attire from the superhero uniform.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

#12 – “The Heartthrob” Eddie Heart (GWP)

| November 13, 2011 | 0 Comments

Dang it, I spelled “heartthrob” wrong.

Eddie Heart is an amalgam of three pro wrestlers: “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert, “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels, and Bret “The Hitman” Hart. Technically proficient, a top rope master, and a master on the microphone, Eddie is a fan favorite.

“Over” refers to how the fans react to him. Being over, for a babyface (or hero) means the fans love him and cheer his every move (by the same token, a heel, or villain, can be over if he gets a lot of boos and jeers).

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

#11 – “The Golden Boy” Ford Knox (GWP)

| November 11, 2011 | 3 Comments

Imagine, for a second, that aliens were real and that they came to Earth. Not to be our friends, but to conquer it. Look around you…see any super heroes? Neither do I. Now, sure, we could throw the Armed Forces of the entire world at them (maybe, if all got along), but what if all it took was a group of men and women that could be passed off as super heroes? What if instead of cannon fodder and casualties, we told them that we had powerful men and women that could beat them in combat?

Yep. We sent professional wrestlers to deal with them.

Welcome to the GWP. Galaxy Wrestling Pro. A federation made up of humans and aliens alike. We’re going to focus on the humans for this, and the next five, entry(ies).

When dealing with a world wide threat, who do you throw at the aliens? The best “talker” in the biz. The World Champion. I mean, he is the WORLD champion (one of 7), so that’s gotta count for something, right? Ford Knox (real name Richard Knochs) is more or less thrown into this mess. He sure doesn’t want to leave the comforts of Earth (women, limos, upscale clothing, etc). And he’s going to do his best to get back to his world. Because of this, he’s considered the heel of the group. But the GWP offers him the opportunity to do something no man (or woman) has ever done in the history of professional wrestling…

He can be the GWP Universe Champion.

The Universe is bigger than the World, right?

I should have put his catchphrase in the image, so I will do that with the next few. By the way, it’s “WHOA!” and “You gotta beat me to be me!” His finisher is called “The Gold Standard” Figure Four Leglock.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

#4 Albert Arnold

Albert Arnold - The Majors

As the bumbling son of franchise owner Abraham A. Arnold, Albert is heir to the family company fortune and all of its assets and liabilities – including a losing Hockey club. As a child, Albert was never interested in sports, and has taken more of an intellectual path in life, as the president of research and development for the family’s auto corporation (Arnold Motors). With the eventual passing of his father comes a large responsibility. Does Albert try to run the ship himself, or will he be forced to sell the team to an owner who has the sports business acumen needed to make the franchise a winning one?

Abraham A. Arnold - The Majors

The crotchety owner of the Motor City Majors, Abraham A. Arnold (or triple A as he is called when he isn’t present) has driven the once storied franchise into the ground with poor management of personnel and staff. After acquiring the Championship winning team from his father Alastair, Motor City has failed to recapture the glory of those years in the Golden Era of hockey. Unless a major change happens at the ownership level, the team will continue its decades long slide into the league basement and cement itself in the history books as one of the worst franchises in the modern era.

Abraham Arnold refuses to listen to any types of change, and is extremely stubborn. At the ripe age of 82, he barely clings to life yet still fiercely controls anything management related in regards to the Majors.

#2 – Eddie Pratt

| November 2, 2011 | 0 Comments

Eddie Pratt from The Majors

Eddie Pratt is the younger level-headed brother of the Pratt family. He acts as the yang to Alex’s yin. Eddie is more reserved, quiet and shy – but he picks his spots well when it is time to speak.

Eddie’s forte is in the numbers. He is obsessed with statistics and history, and remembers almost every single player from the Golden Era of hockey up until the present day – often reciting their stats on a moment’s notice. He serves as the ‘numbers’ guy in the front office – dealing with accounting, percentages and odd statistics for scouting.

Always cheery and smiling, Eddie is the man with the plan to get Alex (and himself) out of a jam.

#1 – Alex Pratt

| November 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

So it begins…

This first character I produced is one of the leads in an upcoming strip I have in development entitled “The Majors”, due for release in early 2012. The story is basically about two brothers who end up buying their favorite hockey team, only to realize that ownership isn’t as easy at it looks.

Alex Pratt is the oldest of the two brothers. He is generally impulsive, irrational and disorganized, and is the main reason why the two brothers end up getting themselves into ‘situations’ that could easily have been avoided with some forethought. Alex is a passionate sports fan, but roots mainly for his favorite hockey team, The Motor City Majors. As the self-appointed idea man of the partnership, Alex is responsible for developing hare-brained schemes for attracting more fans to Majors games, managing player personnel and figuring out ways of keeping his newly acquired team in the news.

As a reference, Alex Pratt is very similar to the Tim Taylor character from Home Improvement. Bumbling and silly, but with the best intentions in mind – misfortune seems to follow him and use him as comic relief.

#30 – The Amazing Evergrowing Tape Ball

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

This little critter actually exists! He lives in my daughter’s hockey bag. Every game it grows another layer, using the tape from my daughter’s shin pads and elbow pads for new skin. Last week it outgrew the helmet and developed a pulse. It does bring good luck to all who touch it. I am considering building an extension to the garage to give Tape Ball it’s own place to stretch it’s legs.

#27 – ToasterHead

| November 27, 2010 | 0 Comments

I’ve had this guy in my mind for years, just didn’t know which direction to go with him…. I like this design.

Toaster Head is a real hot-head. He always plays hungry and when he’s playing really well, your team is toast!

That was so cheesy, but whatevvs.

#26- Cherry Bomb

| November 26, 2010 | 0 Comments

Don’t let Cherry’s curves and good looks fool you. She is a determined and stubborn driver on the Championship Racing Circuit. She’ll do anything it takes to win, even if it means “manipulating” the rules. A rough and tumble gal, take it as a compliment when she throws an F-Bomb your way.

#24 – Turkey Puck

Arriving just in time for the Thanksgiving, Turkey Puck can be used for a holiday tournament, or a food ration of minimal proportions. Check out the wild look in his eyes! Turkey Puck is definitely looking to score this weekend!

#23 – Instant Replay

| November 23, 2010 | 0 Comments

This guy’s wrath can always be felt the second time around. He doesn’t even need to be in the same building to launch an attack. Usually sitting on the couch in his mother’s basement somewhere in Toronto, Instant Replay is on-call all hockey season long and is authorized to question every little move of our beloved old-timer goal judge, Red Light Rebel (see Day #21). Who will get the edge in this battle of Tech vs Old School?

#22 – Evil Shuttlecock

| November 22, 2010 | 1 Comment

The piece of equipment out to ruin badminton. Forever.

#21 – Red Light Rebel

| November 21, 2010 | 0 Comments

He’s old, cranky and knows he’s becoming obsolete. The eagle-eyed Red Light Rebel has been allowing and disallowing goals since the birth of hockey. At first he was positioned behind the net, armed with only a bell. Over the years, he developed his armor with the invention of mesh and plexiglass. His weapon of choice is a light switch, however, he has used a hand-held remote in recent times. He is now in the dog-fight of his professional life and he faces his greatest threat yet…. INSTANT REPLAY!

Day# 16 Thomas “Weeks” Kelsey

#16 Thomas "Weeks" Kelsey, for Aedre's Firefly by Jande Rowe

#16 Thomas "Weeks" Kelsey, for Aedre's Firefly by Jande Rowe

Thomas J. Kelsey, dubbed “Weeks”, short for “Wee Kelsey”, which was what most of the other kids called him from the first day he attended Maple Public School. Snarky remarks during his first recess period about his diminutive size –about two thirds the height of the shortest of his peers– soon gave way to awe when he aptly demonstrated not only his aptitude and skill at most sports, but his well honed sportsmanship as well. He could take joke and a pounding on the sports field better than most boys twice his physical stature. He was built heavy for his height, yet he was agile, too.

He did well in his academic studies, got along well with other boys, and excelled on the sportsfield. The one thing he’s have no truck with was girls, and he held strong opinions as to their place in sports, mostly negative. Where girls were concerned he was implacable. If a girl wanted to play on his team, he would stare at them without a sound until they fled. Unless of course they fled to a teacher who forced him to comply, which he did readily, but gave no quarter to the girl, so that finally she had to give up in defeat.

Aedre, of course, didn’t know this until she smashed into his prejudice head-on. She had asked the recess teacher if she could play soccer, and he had agreed she could. Fully confident of himself and his view of the world, Weeks bested her simply by being himself. No hard feelings on his part. That’s just the way the world works. She never had a chance to even see the ball. She may as well have been invisible. For Aedre, who had hopes and dreams of a different world than the lost and lonely one in which she found herself, it was just another entry carved into her psyche on the very long list of grievances that would push her to the very edge of either going mad, or giving up completely.

Weeks didn’t know anything about Aedre of course, except what the other boys told him, that she was a cootie-bag and a witch besides, but whether or not he believed them didn’t matter. She was a girl and girls had no value in Week’s world.
