#6 Nightbreaker

| November 6, 2011 | 2 Comments

Who–or what–is Nightbreaker?

The true identity of this mysterious member of Mitchell Baranovich’s enforcer team is unknown.  Some say Nightbreaker might be female…but no one has bothered to remove the coal-black skintight outfit that Nightbreaker wears.  Or rather, no one who tried lived to tell about it.  No one can guess what is going on behind to luminous yellow circles that are Nightbreaker’s eyes.  Nightbreaker barely speaks above a whisper, but always follows the orders of Baranovich without question.

It could be that Nightbreaker isn’t even human.

Some say that Baranovich knows the real story about Nightbreaker…but he’s not telling anyone, choosing to keep it all to himself.

Nightbreaker’s main weapon is a scythe that can slice through flesh and bone like a hot knife through butter.  Surprisingly, the weapon is used more to wound, not kill.  It turns out Nightbreaker prefers to go in and use his or her hands to snap the neck of the target.

For the heroes Windwalker, Astral, and the Red Raptor–Nightbreaker remains one of their most dangerous–and mysterious–foes.

To whomever it may concern.

I, Charlie B. Goode, in full use of all my physical and mental abilities hereby declare this my Last Will and Testament.

I, unfortunately, have nothing in my possession worth inheriting to anyone.

And even if I did, I have no family to whom to inherit it anyways.

All I had in the world was my uncle Linus. He cared for me and raised me until his sudden and unexpected death at the age of 97.

It is in his memory that I became a nurse and care for those afflicted by all sorts of mental illness.

Also, I had no money for medical school.

It may not have been the most glamorous of works, but I quite liked it and made me feel like I was doing something important with my life.

That all changed the day I met Edmund Montagu. He had been a guest of the Happy Cheeks Home for the Clinically Insane ever since I got there. He’d never given us any trouble, hadn’t even spoken in all those years. He just used to seat on his wheel chair and read comics all day long.

And one day, out of nowhere, he just got off his chair, started screaming he was a cat, took me hostage and jumped from our third floor window.

I was very lucky that Mr. Montagu had bullet-proof skin and unbreakable bones, or else we would have both died that day.

I was not so lucky in that, when I regained consciousness I was in some abandoned sewer, dressed in a mouse costume and tied to a chair. Mr. Montagu had decided that I would become his sidekick in his new endeavor as a crime fighter.

And that’s been my life ever since.

I’m just a 24 year old nurse. Never even kissed a girl. Now I find myself everyday thrown into the most absurdly dangerous situations because of Mr. Montagu’s insane crusade. I mean, his hearth is in the right place and he kinda, sorta does have what it takes to make it in this business. But he’s a seriously sick person and he needs help, before he hurts someone.

Especially before he hurts me.

I’ll do as I swore to do the day I graduated from nursing school: I will care for my patients. I won’t abandon Mr. Montagu. Not until I finally convince him to go back to the clinic and get help.

But in the mean time, just in case…

#5 – Cat

This World is a filthy, dangerous place.

Evil clutters the drains of our society, making it drown in misery and corruption.

The throat of truth and righteousness is further and further choked by the hairy hands of crime and villainy.

But evil-doers, wrong-doers and other kinds of doers associated with the previous two… BEWARE!!

For I will be society’s avenging plumber, mooning you with my half-shown cheeks of justice!

I will be peppermint flavored cough drop of hope that will sooth your aching throat after I kick those hairy villain’s hand right in his foul butt!

I AM THE CAT! AND I BORROW THE NIGHT!

I borrow it because saying I own it is the kind of thing that egomaniacal super-villain types say. I must remain forever humble and servile to avoid that my super-powers corrupt me and turn me to the side of the devils.

Also, the night truly belongs to the law-abiding citizens of my beautiful hometown, which I’ve made a sacred, double secret pinky swear to protect.

So, once again for the cheap seats: EVIL BEWARE! Because there’s a new cat in town and not only is he hip to your tricks, but he’s also not had his claws clipped in a very, very long time. Kitty can scratch, baby.

Meowch!

And using said claws, plus my other awesome powers, my super scary Charles Bronson from “Death Wish” impersonation, a belt full of pouches, which are then filled with tiny, itsy-bitsy crime-fighting gadgets and my own fearless protégé, the valiant Mouse, I will bring an end to all sorts of crime and villainy.

I will punish the wicked, right wrongs, save damsels in distress, help old ladies cross the street, shake hands, kiss babies and all other duties that this life of super heroism and self sacrifice I’ve pledged myself to demand.

And, in conclusion my superstitious and cowardly lot, you should very much fear me the next time you see me.

FOR I AM THE CAT!!! AND I BORROW THE NIGHT!!

#6 Anna Conda

| November 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

Here is today’s character from my current project of a tongue-in-cheek comic. This character is Anna Conda:

Anna Dixit specialized in zoology at a university in her home country of India. Studying rare species of venomous snakes and working in league with members of the medical field, her desire was to help the doctors discover new cures for the deadliest snake venoms that plagued the people of her land. When Anna was bitten by a snake, however, some of the untested anti-venom was all that was available to cure her in time. Given a form similar to a spinal tap, the medicine was injected in the discs between her spinal lumbar. Healing her instantly, the anti-venom also delivered a side effect none of them could have expected. Anna’s spine at first seemed to be completely flexible. Twisting herself into a pretzel, she felt no pain. While under medical watch, Anna used her idle time to see what else could be accomplished. Twisting became old hat as she exercised herself and learned to control her muscles which now allowed her separate her lumbar and thus to expand her spine by several times its normal length. Further perfecting her new skills, Anna gained the strength to even curl and coil herself around objects that she could then squeeze with her elongated abdomen with incredible force. Her limbs hold no such bendability or stretch ability but she has honed them into finely tuned arms and legs that fully support her ever changing core. Being an upstanding citizen, Anna knew she would have to benefit the world around her by donning a hero’s identity and helping others. Bearing the name Anna Conda, she now uses these powers for good. Able to reach 20 feet into the air and to produce a squeezing pressure of up to 900 metric pounds, she has a terrible weakness that she hopes no one will ever discover: despite her great strength and incredible gift, she is very ticklish. Should a villain ever be wrapped up in her coil with an arm that is free enough to move and tickle her, the sudden shock of silliness would immediately loosen her super strong grip. So far, however, no one has had the chance to learn of this before being squeezed unconscious.

#3 - Wu Xing - Jay Faulkner

Shen Yat-Sun, a humble fisherman from the Hainan Province of China, was half asleep in his small boat, the rod loosely held in his hand, when the blinding flash of light hit him.

Waking with a start Shen fell into the cold water and, when he surfaced, his rod had changed into a wooden staff, with five coloured rings through the top of the shaft.  Gripping the staff tightly he found himself floating up from the water, rising above it and drifting to the shoreline where he suddenly realised that he knew what he held – and who he now was:

Wu Xing – the master of the five elements.

Each ring on the staff represented one of the fabled elements – the black ring was metal, giving him strength and protection; the blue ring was air, giving him flight; the red ring was for fire, giving him blasts of powerful heat and flames; the brown ring was for earth, granting him the power of the earthquake; and the green ring was for water, granting him invisibility.

#2 - Legacy - Jay Faulkner

After a tour of Iraq, Sergeant Eric Danielson returned to his home in Swindon, England and a life that felt as if it were someone else’s.  Each day he awoke and trudged to his new job in the City, dealing with the reams of paperwork that never seemed to get any smaller and then, at the end of each night, to his empty flat and ate another tasteless meal for one.

Many miles away, on a small Greek island, a box was being opened as Eric stated out of his bedroom window, wondering what his role in life was meant to be – wondering, hoping, that there had to be more to it than what he had.

It was at that moment that a bright light flashed through his window and a warm glow enveloped him.  Looking down he found that his clothes had changed – that he had changed.

Now garbed in the tabard of St. George himself – granting him protection from harm; the belt of Waylund Smith- granting him strength beyond mortal men; and wielding the bow of Herne the Hunter – which never missed; and the fabled sword, Excalibur – which could cut through anything non-living.

With the emblems and artefacts of legend Eric Danielson suddenly knew the role that he was destined to play.

#1 - Hope - Jay Faulkner

Elana Verros woke in the middle of the night, throwing on a pair of old jeans and a faded summer top even though the autumn air was cold.  Half asleep she left her family home – her son and daughter in law and their three children – behind her and trudged across the countryside to the cliff tops that she had spent seventy years exploring.

Moving around and through the familiar rocks she came to an opening that she had never seen before – an opening that no mortal had seen for close to three thousand years – and, without conscious choice, she followed it down, deeper and deeper, not noticing that no matter how far she travelled it never got any darker.

When the ground flattened out, and she could go no deeper, she found herself standing beside a marble funeral bier, the porcelain features of a beautiful woman as clear as the day that they had been carved.  Elena’s eyes were drawn to the small wooden box that rested on top of the bier, between the stone hands.  Reaching out she felt a tingle of electricity as she ran her own hands over the wood, feeling the engraved name on the top of it.

With a smile she lifted the box, gently opening the lid, and marvelling at the lights that dance out of it – flying out into the night and bringing Pandora’s final gift to the world … hope.

Universe/Storyline: The Band

Universe details: In the isolated city of Crescent where these characters live, superpowers spring from close encounters with death. Only people born in the city can gain these powers, and since this is a relatively new settlement, the first generation of people born there are just starting to show signs of super-fication. This means mostly kids and teens. Of the teens, Camille, Max, Amelia, Walter, and Rin decide to team up and form a band. They take it upon themselves to help other kids who are just getting powers/dealing with death. Eventually, when The Band realizes that everyone deserves to be informed about the city’s unique predicament, they try to reach every kid in the city at once by putting on a live concert.

Height: 5’ 3”

Body Type: Very petite, thin.

Hair: Short, straight, very light blonde almost platinum. Some bangs, short and stringy. Eyes: Green, bright, and small compared with her teammates. She wears glasses with thin, oblong, unframed lenses.

Race: White, possibly of European or Eurasian decent.

Age: 14

Attire: She is never seen without her bright yellow waterproof poncho, which hangs over her arms down to about her wrists, and hangs lower in the middle, to about mid-thigh. She keeps the oversize hood up almost all the time, even indoors. The hood helps to hide her face/identity. The rest of her costume is made up of a skin-tight dark blue body suit (like a wet suit, shiny and rubbery) and yellow galoshes with black accents.

Superpowers: Weather control, Conscious and Subconscious, Emotion triggered (primary). Here are some weather effects and their corresponding emotions: Happy=Sunny, Focused=Hot, Relaxed=Cold, Distant/Shy=Cloudy, Confused=Foggy, Alert=Windy, Upset=Rainy, Depressed=Snowy, Hurt=Hailing, Angry=Stormy (tornados, hurricanes, dust storms, lightning), Serious=Dry, Fun=Humid, Unsure=Overcast, Sure=Clear, Afraid=Dark Clouds, Curious=Misty. Without thinking, these effects extend over Rin’s general location, usually to within a few feet of her depending on the intensity of the emotion. By concentrating she can extend these effects over far reaches. She can also focus on a particular emotion in order to call out a desired effect. In extreme situations, she can also call upon tornados, lightning bolts, and other disastrous weather, but she has very little control over them.

Time travel, subconscious (secondary). Stress, grief, and/or a desire for understanding can send Rin hurtling back into her past. She learns the hard way that she can’t change anything about the past, only observe. Everything that has happened up to her present is set in stone.

Personality: Like the weather, Rin is unpredictable. Most of the time she hardly speaks, so she can be difficult to read. When she does speak, she can say very insightful and thought-provoking things. She gives the best compliments, but also the best insults.

Power Sources/Backstory:

a.      Weather Control (localized or broad with concentration, fluctuates with emotional state)- Katherine was a witness to her brother’s murder of her mother.

b.      Time travel- When Rin’s brother is found dead, she feels responsible for not guiding him back to the path of goodness. She wishes she could go back to him and change things, thus triggering her first trip to the past.

#6: Avery Mutuus

| November 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: Avery Mutuus
Aliases: N/A
Height: 6’2

Weight: 161 lb

Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
Bio: Avery was born in 1992 to an upper middle class family residing in Florence. She is the older of two twins, the other being Paul Mutuus.

Avery graduated high school and was accepted to the University of Florence on athletic scholarships. The tall and muscular

Avery had been a star forward for her school’s soccer team, leading them to several regional championships.
In 2010, Avery and her brother’s parents were killed during a home invasion. With no way to pay their tuitions, both dropped out of college and sought employment.

They were approached later in the year with an offer to join Operation: At the Gates. The stated goal of the tests was to see the effects on twins and other closely tied individuals. Avery had served as the caretaker for her sickly brother for their entire lives, and the two were noted to be inseparable.

Powers: Avery possesses impressive strength and agility. Her bench press is estimated to be 1700 lb.  She can also run at speeds of 30 mph for a brief period of time. However, these superhuman traits are only in effect when she is close to her brother, Paul. The further the two are from one another, the weaker Avery’s powers are. As such, she usually carries Paul on her back in combat situations.

G. Brett Williams #5 – Cyclone’s Human Commandos

| November 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

After the Faceless War, Cyclone believed it important to maintain human morale. Despite their diminished numbers, human beings were still the most populace race on the planet. Cyclone, unlike many Evos, still saw himself as human. Many human survivors revered Cyclone in a near-messianic way and he reveled in it. Recognizing that any remaining humans who weren’t evolving would be dealing with increasing stress and depression in a post-war world, he decided to create “human only” police units to protect his provinces. These civilian soldiers are fiercely loyal to Cyclone and his regime.

G. Brett Williams #4 – The Faceless

| November 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

The Faceless are the alien race that invade Earth and are eventually repelled by Cyclone and his armies. It is revealed through study of the Faceless dead that they actually share much of the same DNA as humans and appear to be an evolved race of humans that left the planet and colonized space millenia before, thus making the Earth much older than previously believed. The Faceless have the most in common with Evos possessed of telekinetic or telepathic abilities and it is this fact that gives rise to widespread human distrust and Cyclone’s campaign of hate against psychics in the wake of the Faceless war.

The Faceless have staggeringly strong psychic abilities and it is theorized that they eventually evolved their complete lack of eyes or mouths because they no longer needed them to communicate or perceive their environment. The true extent of the Faceless’ abilities isn’t known, but their ability to completely dominate weaker, less-evolved minds is quite strong.

#1 The Scorpion

Art by Michael Powell (@mpowelljr)
Words by Rolando Garcia (@roshow)

The U-City terror known as “the Scorpion” is hailed by some as a hero and by others as a raving lunatic with guns. Regardless of who’s right, both agree: the Scorpion changed the way laws were enforced in the world.

The Scorpion was the first masked crime fighter to successfully help the police close major investigations, including the arrest of four serial killers. In the 30 years since he first appeared, his true identity remains a secret to the public.

The Scorpion has been seen less than a dozen times in the past two decades. Still, his success created precedence, paving the way for vigilantes like Ominus and later Revenger, who help the police by operating outside the law.

Behind closed doors, the Scorpion is a moderately successful voice over actor in animated movies and television shows. His stage mother pushed him into that day job when he was only 7. What he really wanted to be was a cop. Being the weird, hard headed teen he was, he started teaching himself. The voice acting job was flexible and undemanding yet paid him well enough that he was able to pursue his other life as the Scorpion. He never married and never had a family of his own.

He’s currently retired, although he follows the current generation of heroes in the news, obsessively.

#6: Brown Thrasher

  • Name: Steven Holt
  • Age 19
  • Height: 5’9″
  • Weight: 153 lbs.
  • Location: Liberty City, USA
  • Costume: All brown
  • Powers: Has bird-like wings on the underside of his arms to allow flight.

Character info: The Brown Thrasher was a character I created when I was around 11 or 12. For some reason, I had a lot of bird character and I felt the need to add another back then…maybe I wanted one that was a villain. He pretty much looks exactly the same as he did back then. David, Brad, and I were discussing some future villains to use in The Adventurers of Liberty City and we came up with a good team to have our heroes battle. Brown Thrasher will be a member of that team!

#6 Captain Wristblaster and the Psychotic Super-Brain

| November 6, 2011 | 14 Comments

The battle seemed to have gone on for as long as he could remember.  As he rose, once more, from the smoldering crater, another hole blasted out of this meteoric trash heap bulleting towards the exploding star, he wondered how many more hits like that he could take. And how much more time there was to take them.  The child, swollen large with energy, once more raised it’s fists in concentration and hatred, and the machine responded, it’s grip on the meta-blaster tightening, as the needle again sparked and smoked in anticipation of another destructive blast.

#5 – Blood Dragon

| November 6, 2011 | 0 Comments

In the 90’s Blood Dragon was the toughest, meanest, most bad-ass sonofabitch supervillain in the world.  Incredibly strong, skin as tough as dragon’s hide, and the ability to spit flames, Blood Dragon was feared by both the criminal underworld and caped do-gooders everywhere.

But the 90’s were twenty years ago.

Recently released from prison after a 15 year bid, he’s interested in going straight, mending fences with a daughter he’s never known, and living a normal life.

But enemies on both sides of the law have other plans for him.

Plus children who transform in to super-strong monsters are always cool!

So, my first five were “The Vitos.” My next five, starting with #6, are the Michelles, characters based on my wife Michelle.

When I met Michelle, 23 years ago, the feature I remembered most was her eyes. So, we have a character here who can hypnotize with her eyes.

Not much more to add. That’s pretty much all of her in a nutshell.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. Give it a shot!

Atomic Ice

First sighting: Five years ago

Alias: The Coldhearted Chick, The Icy Assassin,

Identity: Secret – Sherilyn Noble

Features: Ice-blue skin and all-black eyes (which is why she wears goggles, medium-length blue hair

Skills: Thermokinesis (can generate snowstorms and icy blasts from her hands), eidetic memory, Systema trained assassin

By all indications, Sherilyn Noble should be dead, and the world believes that she is dead.

A shadowy organization without a name has transformed the former Sherilyn Noble into a cold.warrior in more ways than one. Utilizing Russian Systema training, she became proficient in fighting with her hands and feet, firearms, knives, any weapon known to man. The organization also manipulated her DNA by bombarding her with radiation on a daily basis. The radiation was supposed to control Noble, but it only made her stronger. A side-effect of the radiation was a pale, blue-tinted skin tone, black eyes, blue hair, and a permanently-low body temperature.

When she learned of this, Noble grew furious and shot spiky ice daggers at her supervisors killing them. She also concentrated her energy to create a snowstorm in her containment room. Her escape from the facility was short-lived as the organization told her that they could cure her of her “ailment,” but only if she became an assassin for them. One of her first tasks was to take out a scientist who created a humanoid automaton that could act like a human. Her second, killing the leaders of oil-rich nations in the Gulf.

The Icy Assassin grew in notoriety, and she became a high-priced assassin-for-hire. However, she was no closer to getting a cure, so, she broke away and became a freelancer, much to the chagrin of the organization. With no means to control her, they knew the assassin they perfected would be unstoppable.

And while they’re working on a weapon that can stop the unstoppable, the assassin now known as Atomic Ice has become an army-of-one.

Atomic Ice: TM and (C) Jeff Harris dba Studio Lightcount.

Shrimp-man

This character fuses several ideas: (1) I wanted to create an animal based character like Batman or Spider-man; (2) I watched a cool presentation about the power of the mantis shrimp on Ted.com; (3) Ryan, on ifanboy.com, did a column on cool animal powers for heroes, which featured the mantis shrimp. I had a really hard time deciding on a name: Mantis Shrimp, Smash-Claw, Crevette (if I had made him a woman), Stomatopod. In the end, I decided to follow the Spider-man style, lame as it sounds.

06 – Thunder Cross by Beausephus

| November 6, 2011 | 1 Comment

CHARACTER NAME:  Thunder Cross

DATE OF CREATION: 1992

CONCEPT: A group of young mystics seek to gain supposed “true power” and wind up trapped by the very forces they sought to control.  THUNDER CROSS found himself without a physical body and turned to science as well as magic to find a way to keep his consciousness in some sot of mortal form before the electric energies that make up his being dissipate of take full control of his “mind” living him a nothing but a marauding beast of mystic energy.

____________________________

The original idea that became THUNDER CROSS and his friends started during a period of really looking into and observing the Ditko Doctor Strange and the Simonson Thor runs.  Magic versus humanity.  So I took three selfish young mystics training to in some secret art who desire more and endeavor to find ways of achieving more raw power.  In a Faustian accident brought on by their hbris they find themself almost controlled and possessed by the elemental energies they sought to control.  In the end, they dcie to redeem themselves by using their powers for good before the energies that grant them their abilities consume them.  This basic origin created three characters, Vegeance, Thunder Cross, and Soul Fire…. magic based spandex superheroes. A recreation of the original design is below.

So when I went to re-envision these designs for the new century, I took everything down a more sinister path.  Instead of the characters merely gaining abilities they have questionable control over, the mystic energies possess and destroy everything tht they believe makes them human.  Instead of donning metal gloves and a Ferro-Lad inspired helmet, THUNDER CROSS, must use physics, electonics, and rudimentary magic to create a harness that will allow him to keep a mostly human shape while he seeks a way, with his peers, to pay for their vanity and hopefully restore themselves to their true forms.

If the exploration of a hero’s jounrey is what makes one a hero, I believe one first must rediscover who they are.  THUNDER CROSS is an example of a character whose choices damn them but force him to rediscover his beliefs right  down the very concept of self…. with a bunch of explosions and magic battles thrown in to keep things exciting.
