#19 “Searchlight”

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: The Beacon

To read a sketchy comic introduction to The Beacon featuring some horribly drawn stick figures, feel free to visit this photobucket album.

Searchlight is a registered government hero working for the I.P.P. His job is to track down and tag heroes who do freelance and other unregistered work, so the I.P.P. can keep tabs on them. In general this type of work is considered illegal if not sanctioned by the I.P.P., but putting a superhero in jail doesn’t bode well for the new government agency’s publicity. Plus, most of these guys could break out of jail in the blink of an eye.

So instead, the I.P.P. sends Searchlight to keep an eye on them. Searchlight’s powers are such that he always knows where superheroes are, so that makes them easier to follow, with only one small problem—Searchlight can’t distinguish one superhero on his radar from another until he physically touches them. That’s where The Beacon comes in handy—calling the superheroes down from the sky so Searchlight can touch them.

Searchlight is not really a fan of his work. He finds it amoral to track people without their consent. He only works for the I.P.P. out of a sense of obligation. Because he has powers, he feels like he has to use them. Searchlight is the same age as The Beacon, and likewise just out of college, but he had this job all set up and waiting for him.

He doesn’t maintain a very professional candor, preferring instead to rebel when possible while still keeping his highly paying job and Secret Identity. He rebels in small ways: with his appearance (he dyes his hair black with red highlights only visible in just the right light and spikes it with gel, leaving a small braid that hangs down in the front), and with his behavior. In many ways he is still a boy rather than a man, a stark contrast to The Beacon who acts well beyond her years.

20 – Shadowhawk by Beausephus

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME:  Shadowhawk

DATE OF CREATION: Late 1980’s.

CONCEPT:  A fusion of Batman and Snake Eyes from GI JOE this silent character patrols the rooftops and hidden alleyways prowling for trouble and then descends to dispense street level justice with efficiency and high tech flair.

_______________________________

Shadowhawk was a character that starred in many small comic strips and hand stapled pamphlets.  In the original design, the costume was very basic – a boulbus helmet, metallic bracelets covered in mini-missles, and a bandolier of weaponry resembling Batman’s utility belt in an act of overt swiping.  Shadowhaek, if I remember correctly, was a cop by day (complete with full on 1980s moustache) and vigilante by night.  In his numerous adventures he fought character in scenarios inspired by GI JOE cartoons and “KRAVENS LAST HUNT.”

In the reinterpretation of my elementary school design, I kept the color scheme (toning down the bright teal a bit) and the characters giant “wings” that run the sides of his torso and allow him to glide along.  I’ve removed the missle launcher bracelets and stylized the helmet a bit to make it less like 1950s Sci-Fi pace helmet and a bit more predatory to in some way refer to the Shadowhawk name.

The best thing about this character was in the early 1990s when IMAGE comics first formed.  Founding Image Creator, Jim Valentino, had been writing one of my favorite serie, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, for MARVEL and had just relased his own creator owned IMAGE property, Shadowhawk.  At a regional comic convention I brought him some color copies of the Shadowhawk character and comics I had made years earlier.  He was very gracious and really liked my childhood zeal for superheroes comparing the work to that of his son who was close to the age I had been when I drew my first Shadowhawk comics.  Whether he was just being a pro or really appreciated my attempt to share my fanboy appreciation for his work, I’ll never know, but his friendliness made a big impression on me as to what it means to apprecaite positive compliments and how to act when someone is being genuine even when there is a line growing behind them.  Mr. Valentino made a life-long fan of me that day, and no matter wht I always buy a comic with his name on it to in some small way show my appreciation for his five minutes of time when I was a kid.

Thanks for checking out my stuff.

Meet Charlie. He may be the silent type, but it has yet to be seen if he can live up to the “strong” part of the stereotype. Nevertheless, he is determined to play the hero, as he, along with his big sister, protects the streets from evil. Or at least, pretends to.

Day 20: Sapius

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

In 1946 Stalin came to the conclusion that he needed soldiers that were obiedient, and loyal beyond the point of doubt, or contempt.  He came to the conclusion that human soldiers, no matter the physical or psycological conditioning would never attain this state.  He then sought scientists who could MANUFACTURE soldiers that were completely loyal to him, and more importantly disposable in the name of the state.  To this end PROJECT: OCTOBER SWORD was born.  One division of this project manipulated simian DNA through chemical and radiation process to where an end product of loyal human like apes were produced.  As an added bonus several of the 500 apes made from this processed special powers.  One of these ape-men, dubbed SAPIUS, had the power of telepathy and telekenesis.  This subject however did develop a will and personality of his own, and soon used his powers to free his fellow ape men from the bonds imposed by his creators.  Sapius then waged a war with this small army against the both sides of the cold war.  On several occasions he came close to victory, but was thwarted time and again by costumed adventurers such as The Alliance and The Phantom Five.  Sapius in 1968 after years of stalemate approached the United Nations for formal diplomatic talks.  In 1972 the UN gave Sapius a probationary nation status, and was allowed to live with his followers on a small South Pacific Island.  In 1975 an event from an invading alien force brought Sapius and his people to the aid of the human race.  The conflict left thousands dead, dozens of heroes and villains killed and Sapius’ entire people wiped out. Sapius now resides alone on his island in a dead deserted city, contemplating if there was something he could have done to save his people…

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

Kong Luo was a simple foodcart owner and operator on his way home from a rough day at work in Hong Kong, when he and his cart were struck down by an oncoming truck.  Kong fell into a deep coma, and usually this would be the end of the story.  But while he was comatose he was abducted by aliens with 4 other persons from accross the globe, performed experiments on them, and returned them with most of their memory of the incident wiped.  Kong still was in a coma, but had manifested the power to eminate a astral projection of himself made of some unknown form of energy.  This astral self maintains all of Kong’s memory and personality, can posess other persons and life forms with complex enough brain structure, emit energy pulses, and have manipulation over some forms of matter.  But this energy form can not touch or hold anything without extreme concentration.  It has little to no physical presence, and can be disrupted with emp pulse, and other forms of intense radioactive busts…  Kong was eventually contacted by Arbrey Carisle, who was abducted by the same aliens and given powers in the 1960’s.  He took him and three other abductees, and reformed THE PHANTOM FIVE: A group of adventurers that operated in the 60’s and 70’s.  Kong now is now a hero that traverses the universe but never really leaving his own bedside.

#20 – The Occultist

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

This is a character which I jotted down in 2009 – started to work on creating way back then. I had ideas of stories – pulp fantastical stories, told as newspaper strips or in hyper-compressed Golden Age style books.

Here’s one of the earliest designs I did for the character:

As the idea for the character grew, I had this plan to have him break through the fourth wall, and to find himself lost in other comic book realities – to have him appear in other stories, to have other indie creators put out their own books with him in. The idea was to have him fight his way back, breaking free of the last constraint – copyright – and become a creative commons character.

Sadly – he got ahead of me, and about 7 or 8 months after I’d added a sketch like this to my deviant art page - http://jamiegambell.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2glsde – Dark Horse Comics announced their own series, called The Occultist.

I don’t think anything was shady about this – the characters are very different. It is frustrating, though.

NB – I spoke with Dark Horse a while ago, and they said that I was okay to use the character, name and all, as long as I didn’t put out a book with that title and have his name appear on the cover.

Not sure where I stand with having the character appear in published work – does a DA posting count?

Anyway – here he is – The Occultist.

Art by Andrew Ross MacLean – this is a splash for a book I was planning, seeing different creators’ offer their take on the character… maybe one day…

#19: Solar Flare

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

Real Name: Todd Hitch

Height: 6′

Weight: 170 lbs.

Powers: Able to directly transfer heat and light from the sun into powerful energy blasts and flight.

Character info: Solar Flare is the modern day superhero son of a previous entry I did for the 30 Character Challenge, The Silver Spark. He’s a very quiet individual, probably caused by witnessing the apparant death of his parents at a young age. However, he’s extremely powerful and a valuable asset to his allies. I first created this character when I was a kid; at that time, he was a kid superhero named Cosmic Kid. When he got older, he changed his name to Solar Flare. I have two possible storylines for comics where Solar Flare will show up…not sure which one I will use yet, but his origin will remain the same. Based on which comic he ends up in, determines his interaction with teammates and his final costume design.

#18 – Tom Foolery

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

I realize that the “rictus grin” makes him look like the Joker, but Tom is less of a jokester and more of a killer. His act went nowhere, so he’s taking his act on the road, so to speak, and having a three-night engagement at the Ritz…unless someone stops him. All his shows are interactive, so rest assured that if Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark didn’t kill you, Tom Foolery will. He’s the Vaudevillian Villain!

I really don’t like the way he came out, but this is essentially what he looks like. He’d wear different outfits for his different performances, but mostly, this is his look. And that is lipstick, not an actual scar.

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. If you’re a writer who can’t draw (like me!), you might want to try it!

Lisette

“Le combat est stupide, mais je dois le faire. pour survivre dans ce monde insensé.”

Lisette Oiseaux was a dancer. She dances when she’s happy and feeling joyful, but she has been trapped in the middle of a war that has torn her homeland, Roches le Fau apart. As a child, Lisette was a nurse to the wounded, often called Fille de l’Espoir, “The Girl of Hope,” by the soldiers. As she grew into a woman, her reputation only increased as Lisette became a symbol of the resistance, and joined the battlefield.

Skilled in savate and parkour, Lisette was unstoppable, quick, and quite guile. “Combattant de la Foudre,” The Lightning Fighter.

When the war ended, many wanted Lisette to become their queen, but she revealed she’s not a ruler, but one of the people, and she chose to remain with the people she loved so much.

Lisette’s youth was never a hindrance to her. In fact, she used it to her advantage. When chosen to compete in this mysterious tournament, Lisette was hesitant to leave. However, when learning of the prize money offered to the winner, she knew that it could help the reconstruction process of her homeland  in a big way, so with a heavy heart, Lisette left her homeland as an icon and hopes to return as a champion, though in the minds and hearts of her fellow countrymen, the Girl of Hope already is.

#17 – Evelyn Pierce

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

As with so many super-heroes, Evelyn’s powers manifested when she was a teenager, immersed in the complex stresses of adolescence and high school. In short order, her hair turned a deep green, which earned no small amount of mockery from her classmates at Ravensbrook High. That would not be the end of her troubles, though.

She soon discovered that she could communicate to plant life – and that plants were terrifying. They spoke to her of their primal needs and their unreasoning desires, which nearly drove her mad. Even worse, she was able to affect the plants themselves, although she wasn’t sure if she was controlling them or if they were using her to gain more power. After she accidentally killed her best friend, Evelyn’s family moved to Arizona. When she turned eighteen, she moved to a small house in the desert, as far from plant life as she could reasonably get. Her plan was to stay away from plants and never have to hear their hungry voices again.

All that changed when Department of National Security agent Tanner Quan came to visit her. He had an offer from the government to use her powers for good. But she still can’t control them, and fears that she may do terrible things again.

She says, “When the electro magnetic waves were fired down on my hometown, that is when most of the older people died. Those of us from the younger, wildly-irradiated demographic found ourselves enhanced.”

Now her sonic humming powers and her gravity altering abilities are put to a task on a daily basis.

#18 “The Beacon” Nancy Naymore

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: The Beacon

To read a sketchy comic introduction to The Beacon featuring some horribly drawn stick figures, feel free to visit this photobucket album.

In an alternate version of present-day America, people all over the world are born with extraordinary superpowers, and 99.9% of those people are men. Our story follows Nancy Naymore, a woman gifted, or rather cursed, with the involuntary ability to summon other superhumans to her aid whenever she is distressed. She believes that she is the only woman in the world with special abilities, with the possible exception of a superwoman who is little more than urban myth, known only as The Bombshell.

Just out of college at 22, Nancy has trouble getting a job because her nervousness during interviews tends to cause disruptive rescue attempts. She would much rather be doing hero work, but the I.P.P. (Identity Protection Program) rejected her due to gender bias. Without an S.I. (Secret Identity) sanctioned by the I.P.P., doing any kind of hero work is considered vigilantism and can be grounds for arrest. So, Nancy is reduced to applying wherever she can for the time being.

Because of her powers Nancy has spent most of her life thinking supermen are annoying jerks who won’t leave her alone. She projects these feelings onto other men, making it hard for her to find a satisfying relationship. When the government superhero named Searchlight comes to her rescue, he recognizes her as one of them, and sets her up with an S.I. (‘The Beacon’) and a job working for the I.P.P. Together they track and ‘tag’ superheroes, so that the I.P.P. knows where they are at all times. Their partnership is rocky at first, but they grow on each other.

Truthfully, The Beacon is fed up with the dickish behavior of most of the supermen she encounters, and plans to use what she knows about them to her and the public’s advantage by leaking scandalous stories about them to the press. Nancy’s best friend, Brenda, is a photographer who follows Nancy on her missions to get the dirt on film.

When she is not working Nancy likes to solve sudoku puzzles and read murder mysteries.

#17 Death, an alien

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: The Band

Universe details: In the isolated city of Crescent where these characters live, superpowers spring from close encounters with death. Only people born in the city can gain these powers, and since this is a relatively new settlement, the first generation of people born there are just starting to show signs of super-fication. This means mostly kids and teens. Of the teens, Camille, Max, Amelia, Walter, and Rin decide to team up and form a band. They take it upon themselves to realizes that everyone deserves to be informed about the city’s unique predicament, they try to reach every kid in the city at once by putting on a live concert.

It’s not clear what this guy’s actual name is, but people in town who have seen him call him Death because he looks uncannily like the Grim Reaper. He stands at a shockingly tall 7 feet, wears a hooded, faded black cloth robe and carries a long stick with a curved, pointed branch at the top. His parchment skin is stretched so tightly over his skull that you can see the impressions where his eyes, nose and mouth should be.

Not much is known about Death at all, not where he came from, how long he’s been in Crescent or why he’s there. He only attacks when provoked, behaving like a wild animal fighting for survival.

At first The Band thinks he might be human, and tries to find a way to help him. He communicates with them via telepathy.

‘Death’, both in the literal sense and represented by this physical manifestation, is tied in to the source of the kids of Crescent’s powers. How so remains to be seen…

#15 Sealed-Can Coelacanth

| November 19, 2011 | 2 Comments

Some time ago an alien craft crashed into the Earth’s ocean, injuring a coelacanth. Taking pity on the fish, the aliens brought it inside and froze it so that they might have some later project to work on in their free time while trying to repair their ship. 80 million unsuccessful years later they finally got bored. The coelacanth had its intelligence increased and was bonded to a robotic life-sustaining humanoid suit. It would be sent out from the alien’s underwater base to do whatever in the world above for their entertainment. It just so happens that it decided to become a superhero.

#18 Johanna Knight – Soul-searcher

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

At the end of the night, all I can really do is sit and ask myself “did I make the world a better place today?”

Some days I can say, “Yes. One more piece of scum is off the streets and one more honest citizen is sleeping safely at home tonight.”

But then there are the other days. The days I wasn’t quick enough. The days I wasn’t strong enough. The days I wasn’t strong enough. Those are the days that end in body counts. Those days, I have to answer my question, “No. I haven’t changed a damn thing. The world’s still ugly and violent, and the good die while the bad prosper.”

Kyle made me promise that I wouldn’t focus on the ones I couldn’t save. “Look to the living. That’s why we do this.” He said that every night. It was his mantra. It was also the last thing he ever said to me, right before he went into the building for the children.

We’d been tracking a sick messed up man named Lock ’n Key. His schtick was kidnapping the children of parents he felt were too lenient. Something about how his mother wasn’t strict enough on him as a kid. If the parents resisted too much during the kidnapping, then they were expendable lessons to teach the child a lesson.

By the time we caught him, he already grabbed his next kid. We got to the house just minutes too late. The bodies of the parents were still cooling.

But in his haste to escape us, he hadn’t taken the usual precautions. We were able to find his hideout, and I’m not going to deny that I enjoyed beating the ever-lovin’ crap out of him to force him to tell us where the kid was.

When Kyle went in, it wasn’t until I saw the sick grin on Lock ’n Key’s face that I knew it was a trap. I tried to radio Kyle, tell him to get out, but the moment he answered, the charges blew and the walls collapsed on to him.

I stared at the rubble. There was no way that he had survived. I turned to the psycho. My hands were clenched. I was going to beat this man to death with my bare hands. I would have too, but there was a sound over the mike. A cough. A single cough.

It was a hope, just a glimmer of hope. And that was all I needed. I dropped the little shit and attacked rubble with everything I had. The coughs became fainter, and I threw everything I had into moving the rocks.

Then the cough came louder. Not from the radio, but actually from one of the piles surrounding me. I shifted a rock and found a little pocket where a support beam had fallen. And there she was. It was almost a miracle to see him lying there. But he didn’t move when I shook him. I checked his pulse, but his body was already cooling. And then there was another cough, coming from underneath Kyle.

The girl. It was the girl. Kyle had found her. He must have been carrying her out when the blast started, shoved her into the alcove and covered her.

When the police arrived, Lock ‘n Key was handcuffed to a light post. I didn’t kill him, because Kyle wouldn’t have wanted that, but he won’t be using his arms or legs for awhile.

That night was the first night I didn’t ask myself anything when I got home. The answer was right there in the empty chair beside me.

19 – Bronze Dragon by Beausephus

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME: Bronze Dragon

DATE OF CREATION: 1991

CONCEPT: An adventurer/archeologist is magically cursed with a mystic living stone encasing him at all times.  After training with ancient magicians of the Orient, they carve the emblem of their order, a giant bronze dragon, into his cursed stone form, in an attempt to save him from eternal walking damnation.

__________________________

Before I got into comics and superheroes I listened to tapes of old time radio shows and read about pulp heroes like The Shadow and the Lone Ranger.  The BRONZE DRAGON character started as a blatant rip-off of Doc Savage, right down to the metallic orange skin and adventurer back story.

As the character evolved, I seemed, once again, drawn to the concept of great power possessing great men and exploring the results.  Instead of shiny metallic skin, the character became encased in skin that looks like polished stone.

Now tons of characters have non-organic skin, and the cut-off they must feel due to a complete lack of sensual connection with the world around them must be infuriating to the point of madness.  So how does my character deal with it?  Going back to the pulp well, he trains with ancient Oriental mystics, a la The Shadow, who help him learn how to live with his cursed “skin.”  They carve the emblem of their monastery into his rocky skin, in a ceremony of purification through the extreme pain of carving the dragon head into his body.

By devoting himself to the philosophy of the Bronze Dragon Order, The Bronze Dragon keeps himself focused and his ever hardening “skin” from overpowering him and controlling his existence.

Thanks for checking out my stuff.

#19 – Chaos

| November 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

Today’s entry is a villain for my previously posted super hero, Insomniac.  Chaos is to Insomniac as the Joker is to Batman.  She’s her opposite. And she’s absolutely crazy.

Chaos is into anarchy.  But for her, the idea of anarchy is not some kind of punk rocker political statement.  She just thinks order and peace are boring, and enjoys upsetting the status quo.  Much like Insomniac, Chaos is super agile and a very intelligent, side effects of her psychic abilities… Unfortunately, another side effect of her mental powers was that she kind of snapped, and now is obsessed with causing chaos where there is order.

Artist Note: Chaos was the name of a character I created way back in high school, who was also a villain.  For this design, however, I simply took inspiration from the name to come up with a completely different character, quickly and on the fly.
