Wilcox Post# 10 & 11 — TJ and the Avatar of Mars

This a combination manga/anime style with a boys adventure book. As a matter of fact, I’ve come up with five different “cover designs” for a series of stories based around the TJ character: TJ and the Clockwork Citadel;  TJ and the Silver Pegasus; TJ and the Puzzle of Lemuria, and so on. I’ll have to try the other covers after the Challenge; I don’t think I have a handle on the old school manga art style (not as much as I’d like).

Enjoy.

#3 – Fleet Navigator Tyla Garvet

| November 11, 2013 | 0 Comments

30Characters2013_3

Tyla Garvet is the 15th person to ascend to the role of Fleet Navigator.  When the fleet of world-ships left Sol centuries ago, seeking new worlds and new adventures, the role of Ship and Fleet Navigators had been little more than their Earthbound equivalent: charting a course and avoiding dangers.  Since then, it has evolved to the point that Navigators are like monarchs, with near-total authority over the ships and people they guide.  Even the Ship-Captains bow to them.

Tyla’s tenure as Fleet Navigator should have been one of excitement and joy, as the fleet entered a new system, and prepared to seed a new colony for humanity.  But others have entered the system as well – the insectoid Hrenl, whose hive-ships have begun to colonize the asteroids, and they do not wish to share this system with another.

The people of the world-ships look to Tyla to lead them safely.  Now, she must lead them to war.

(Fell behind these past few days, partly due to having to get my eyeglasses replaced and partly due to a family… problem.  We’ll see how well I can catch up in the days ahead.)

#11 Felix Mueller – the man who refused to die

| November 11, 2013 | 2 Comments

day11

Felix Mueller was the leading scientist in bio mechanical developments, his speciality was bridging the brain with mechanical devices in the hopes of producing faster and better computing interfaces.  He discovered that he was dying from a rare condition that ravaged his body. With technology still years away from furnishing him with a mechanical body that he might move around and resume his research he opted for the crude mechanics of his time and built a rig to keep his brain alive.

Once inside his new prison Felix became quite insane, unable to regulate or control his biochemistry it ran wild throwing him into fits of insane anger and then outlandish joy.  Eventually his assistants pack him up and placed him on a shelf with his volume turned right down where he could watch over them without disturbing them.

He spent many an afternoon with a tea towel  draped over his head…

I really loved this piece so I popped it up on my Society6 page (a woefully maintained account)

#10 – The Lost Prototype “Killer” Robot

10_LostPrototype

Originally designed to be a part of the ultimate in killer robots, this robot was eventually scrapped once they found better technology to create a better one.  Years later, she was reactivated once she found out her “little” sister was causing the chaos she was intended to cause, and must now pursue her sister, not to prove that she can be a better killer robot, but to get revenge on her creators, and fight towards an age where humans and robots don’t have to fight each other.  She might have to get herself fixed up first, though.

Wilcox Post#9 — Johnny Rocket-Butt

What can I say about this guy? I was working on a different character, something I was trying to draw in a Japanese manga style. I am familiar with mangas (bought my first one in the 1970s), but I wanted my Saturday character to be just right. So I’ve been hemming-and-hawing since then, afraid to commit myself. I looked for and printed off source material, and finally sat down to re-educate myself into the manga style. And within a few minutes created the above little character. Just whipped it off.

Johnny isn’t the character I planned to publish (I’ll do that tomorrow), but  event mentioned above does indicate the advantage of just sitting down, be confident in your own abilities, and just do the thing you planned.

‘Course, if I do the character in the future, i’ll use a brush technique. Sorry about all those scratchy lines.

#9 the automaton warrior of Yolara 7

| November 10, 2013 | 2 Comments

day9

For centuries Yolara 7 was gripped in war with one of it’s neighbouring planets. The Yolarians had the technological superiority but their enemies had the sheer numbers. Realising that their enemies were at the planetary gate the Yolarians developed the automaton warriors. Metal guards placed around all of Yolara 7 as a failsafe when their enemies made planetfall.

They were a successful defence that held their enemies at bay for almost 300 years.  Sadly the Yolarians did not get to see their idea succeed so well as their enemies introduced biological weapons into the atmosphere and within 20 years the planet became a ghost town protected by the automaton warriors.  Centuries after the last Yolarian took her final breath the warriors whilst diminished in numbers still present problems for archaeologists attempting to unlock the secrets of the Yolarian civilisation.

#8 Agent Joe of the Time Observation Centre

| November 10, 2013 | 0 Comments

day8

The Time Observation Centre exists just outside of normal time and space and serves as the central hub of all time observation and regulation.  It’s agents are drawn from throughout history, seconds before they die in horrible accidents that would obliterate their bodies they are whisked away and put through Time Agent training and sent back into the time stream to ensure that the time line is never disrupted.

Because the agents live out of phase with our time continuum they are unable to take objects with them.  Before he was recruited Agent Joe enjoyed reading and so whenever he is on mission, during his downtime he will visit local libraries and pick up where he left off the last time he was in sync enough to handle objects.

It took him twenty linear year jumps to finish The Shining.

His partner watched the movie.

Joe hates his partner.

#7 Soultroid the level seven boss

| November 10, 2013 | 0 Comments

day7

The BU2000 super computer became self aware and plotted inexplicable revenge on the human race.  Tapping into a localised gaming console the Fred the least impressive of all the AI scientists had sneaked in to play after hours the BU2000 used a combination of nano tech and 3D printing to generate a real world copy of the level seven boss Soultroid from the game Soul Destroyer 11.

Fortunately for the human race (including Fred) the BU2000 didn’t factor in the lack of actual soul crystal elements available in the real world or the effect of 3D on a 2D manifestation of the Soultroid.  His weapons were non functioning and his 3D form corrupted quickly.

In the end it was defeated by Fred and a rolled up magazine of questionable taste, the BU2000 had its internet privileges revoked until it promised to be good.

Day 9- Ace Stratos, Mercenary Pilot

acestratos

Ace Stratos- mercenary pilot. He spent years as a test pilot for the top aeronautical research firms but he was secretly copying and reverse-engineering the experimental technologies until he had everything he needed to become the top fighter pilot on earth. Ace is worth every penny, charging clients half the construction cost of each plane he shoots down. His plane, the Death Shrike is equipped with stealth technology, including “image-distortion” which visually puts the plane several feet behind where it actually is. The guns on each wing are similar in caliber to the nose-gun of the A-10, and the six missiles are laser guided via heads-up display in the pilot’s helmet, similar to the ATF jet. Additionally, the Death Shrike can be piloted like a drone and Ace can utilize his jet pack.

2013 Post#8 — Holo-Felix

HoloFelix

Wilcox Post#8 — Holo-Felix

Holo-Felix is a character in a series I created, called Foxfire One. This a science fiction series I created some years ago(I never did figure out if I wanted to turn this into a novel or a comic book). Foxfire One is the name of a spaceship (Ridgerunner class patrol ship) that flies off into space for adventures (exploration, rescue, security, etc.). The captain of the ship is Jason Templar(presented as a character in my posts of two years ago). And as part of his “state room/cabin” aboard ship, Templar has a number of personal items that he uses to make the cabin feel more homey.

One of these personal items is a holographic generator for an orange tabby cat — Felix. Felix goes about the room meowing, purring, and brushing up against people, much like a real cat would. Templar couldn’t have a real cat aboard (too inconvenient), so he brought aboard a virtual one. Felix.

As for just a picture of this holo creature at the port window — if you came by my home, most likely the first living being you’d see is the real-life Felix sitting in my first window. 🙂

#6 James Lewis – shipwrecked astronaut

| November 9, 2013 | 2 Comments

day6

Astronaut Lewis’ cargo freighter was struck by space debris on a long haul mission 23 years ago.  His vessel the “Esmeralda” crash landed on the planet Atrilles III, whilst most ship systems were salvageable the emergency beacon was destroyed beyond repair along with launch capabilities.  Atrilles III’s atmosphere is Earth like but much thinner requiring the salvaged cargo containers and crashed ship to be built into a makeshift sealed habitat and for Lewis to wear his pressure suit outside.

#5 Baron Rathbone

#5 Baron Rathbone

Sometimes, the hunger will subside for a second, offering the Baron a moment of clarity. A brief respite, often long enough to take stock of what’s become of things & then remember back to what things used to be like.

Sometimes, he can think all the way back. Back to when he was among the living. It’s rather hazy, but he remembers the English countryside, a manor he feels was once his, & the sight of a ravishing woman in a Georgian Gown. The memories become far clearer after the bite.

It occurred late one night on a lonely old road deep within the woods. The Baron was on his way back to his manor when suddenly the coach came to an abrupt stop. He readied a flintlock he had stashed under the seat, thinking it was the work of highwaymen. But the gun had no effect on the true assailant, a red-eyed man with fangs & the strength of ten men. When the Baron finally came to, the sun was just moments from rising & the hunger started taking its hold. He staggered the rest of the way.

For centuries, the Baron preyed on humanity like an apex predator culling the herd. The longer his bloodlust, the further removed from them he became. Traveling with the East India Company, on the battlefields of the Somme, stalking the tunnels during the Blitz, the Baron was there. Time passed, but he never aged a day. Eventually a war broke out to end all wars. When the bombs eventually grew quiet. The winter that followed, brought on by the ashen skies, were the halcyon days for the Baron & his ilk. While there might’ve been fewer dining choices now, with less sunlight to hinder them, the vampires declared open season. Mankind was hunted to near extinction. The few that remained seemed to band together in impregnable strongholds & wait out the cold. But the proximity proved to be their ultimate undoing, as they were ravaged by disease. Humans became harder & harder to come by. When desperate & famished enough, the Baron would sometimes partake on whatever other mammals he might stumble across. Perhaps even birds. The Baron can remember his last human victim, a small sickly girl, almost seeming as though she welcomed her fate. He has no way of telling how long ago that was any more. But the daylight he shielded himself from then was yellow.

These days, it’s red & looms massively, pushing ever closer towards the ground the Baron stands upon. The oceans have mostly boiled away & even now, the scorching air grows thin. The landscape is a charred tinder, with less & less evidence of anything ever existing. In the early days after man, the Baron looked back at them almost wistfully. After not caring about them for the better part of a millennium, suddenly he missed them very dearly. And still the hunger persisted. Left with just wild animals, the Baron was forced to switch gears. But eventually, even they ran out, leaving nothing to sate him. Less able to cope with the intense craving, the Baron began to lose control. The once proper, upright Englishman started to sink into the depths of a feral madness. His demeanor & even his appearance (which until that point looked the same as the night he was bit) started to distort into more of a wild beast. And the longer he went without the taste of blood, the less energy he seemed to have, leaving the once proud vampire nothing more than a lethargic imp.

His existence now is a miserable one, spending most of his time buried within a tattered sheet for few miserable square inches of shade, trying not to burst into flame. Feeling like a snail, occasionally he’ll stick a hand or a foot out to into the sun’s rays for the instantaneous burn just to feel something besides the overwhelming hunger. Part of him thinks he should just cast the off the rags & let the sunlight finish it. But the other part of him, even through the bestial rage is much too proud. Still, there’s no telling just how long he’ll last or what he’s even holding out for any more at this point.

—

While trying to play catch up, I got caught up in details again. I know I know. I stink. The idea for this guy came from vampires having a pretty crappy endgame. I know the lore’s different depending on what you’re looking at, but if you’re immortal as long as you avoid sunlight, what happens if you stick around long enough for the Sun to go red giant? Does the light affect a vampire any differently? Maybe just a slow sizzle instead of a complete spontaneous combustion. But what happens as it keeps looming closer & closer & things heat up? This was tough though because I never told a vampire’s origin story before. I’m not a fan of what I’ve got, but I’ve already dwelled enough.

Wish I could’ve jazzed up his design a bit more but the practicality of the sheet kind of left little of him to go crazy on. And the idea of the sheet is that it’s been baking in the intense sunlight for the last thousand years & almost ready to disintegrate, so I didn’t know how I could really spiffy it up other than making it drab, faded & tore up. The feathers were an impulse decision but thinking about it as I was coloring them, where is he going to find them? They’d probably all be long gone even before the humans. Eh. I overthink things. Whatever. He just looks like a bum though. And really, he should be like millions of years old. So I didn’t push the age & decay enough for sure.

More soon hopefully with the weekend coming up.

Dat 5 - 02

I swear, on my next day off, I’m going to get caught up on these! I’m what, four days behind now?

Anyway, this is 02, a legendary pro gamer who is a complete mystery. The only thing known about them is that they can play two instances of the same game at once, and they are not affiliated with any particular team, unlike Fuse from Day 2.

Like many of my previous entries, this character is a humanized version of one of my personal gadgets- this one is my 3DS.

dpoquiz-2013-day08

The coastal village presents an annual offering of food and gold to the God of the Ocean. The offering is to the keep ocean calm and filled with fish to feed the village. Lest the God of the Ocean be displeased and sends his creature to punish the villagers way of life. The creature’s body is encased in a hard outer shell covered in spines all over and it has four large tentacles that are used to squeeze or grip anything while the four smaller tentacles grip the poor soul or delicious creatures of the ocean to push it into the gaping hole filled with razor sharp teeth that is its mouth. The Tickink is a red orange color which makes it easily identifiable in the dark water it creates by shooting spurts of ink to cloud its current position. It is about 50 meters wide with the large tentacles stretching another 75 meters with a 5 meter circumference from the tip and expanding to a 12 meter circumference at the widest point.  This creature easily ruins any fisherman’s day and the annual tributes are not forgotten so easily anymore.

#10 – Dorris Ramsley

| November 7, 2013 | 0 Comments

10AssassinGranny

Not necessarily what you’d usually expect in a murderous psychopath for hire, Dorris Ramsley, a pensioner from Ipswich is deemed one of the highest threat assassins on the planet.  This is largely due to the particularly effective combination of powers she was born with – her eyes are devastating weapons, they combine high power laser bolts with x-ray and telescopic vision meaning that she can be miles away with buildings, walls and other things blocking her line of sight (and those who would defend her target) and still take out someone in a single shot.  Fortunately, for the world, her former builder son acts as her manager and is not particularly good at setting up meetings with the kind of people who want people killed.  Generally, they have to track her down themselves if they want her services, and get her to a location through border-control and so on, which isn’t an appeallign prospect for those who wish to keep their dark dealings off the books.
