01: Sonho

| November 2, 2013 | 2 Comments

Character Name:
Sonho

Brief Bio/Description:
Sonho is a gender-less but male-identifying amorphous, amphibious being. His appendages, and the majority of his body, are comprised almost exclusively of muscular tissue. Lacking a proper skeleton, his body contains flexible cartilage which can be manipulated into different shapes and locations with enough muscular control. Sonho prefers to keep the majority of his cartilage in his head and torso. You could compare his abilities to a cross between those of a jelly fish and an octopus. He finds humans fascinating and loves human humor and sarcasm. He stumbled onto the website known as 4chan, and now he makes tentacle jokes all the time. His human friends often draw comparisons between Sonho and average teenage boys, despite Sonho claiming to have lived over a century already. He loves to eat sushi; not for the taste, but for the irony and reactions he gets.

Style Commentary:
In the past, I’ve had a very difficult time bogging myself down in the details. I resolved today to sit down, rough out a decent pose, and lay the character out with simple details. I’m determined to avoid plain human characters (though I may “cop out” and do a few at some point this month, if the whim strikes) so I can start broadening my skills and get some new research done. Like, for this guy! I wanted Sonho to be technically genderless, and when the tentacle appendages started happening, I wanted to keep in mind some semblance of a factual basis, so I looked up the muscular system of an octopus! Very cool! Back to technical style: I laid down a simple black outline over the pose sketch, then filled a base color, which I copied and changed to the shadow color so I could mask it away for a simple cell-shaded effect. Not my usual approach, but I had fun and didn’t bury myself in immense detail or color work, so: mission accomplished!

#01 – Desdemona

desdemona

Dezzie goes to Demon High, the long standing rival of neighbouring city’s Angel’s Charter School. She only looks tough, her bark is far worst than her bite. Mind you, her bite is pretty terrible. As a freshie, she must do her best to look as dis-interested in the world around her as possible, lest she be picked on and teased. As much as she hates her missing wing, at least it gives her cool cred.

Day 1: Loraine

| November 1, 2013 | 0 Comments

Loraine is a princess without a kingdom.  Both her and her sister (see day 2), lost their home and family on the same day and have been wandering the land looking for a home ever since.

Force to survive on the run, she has grown strong and is a powerful warrior.  She prefers close combat and will fight with her fists when practical.

She can be a bit head strong and will pick fights when she shouldn’t. Fact is, there aren’t too many that can beat her in a fair fight and she’s made a lot of enemies.  Mostly men that are embarrassed to be beaten by a girl.

Wu 01: Melissa Silian

| November 1, 2013 | 0 Comments

Day one - Melissa Silian

Melissa Silian got into an accident while riding on her scooter – she crashed into a car that drove past the red light and her left leg got stuck behind the back tire and in-between the chain. The cycle still worked and it cut her foot clean off. The person who she crashed at paid and constructed her a new fully-functioning (albeit metal) foot, which Melissa designed. She now helps out at his laboratory, designing and crafting all kinds of machinery, but mostly exoskeletons and other implants. Her story mainly focuses on her work and a love triangle between him, her and a third wheel who is necessary plot device.

She likes to wear different kinds of stockings on her right leg to ‘balance out’ her left leg. Melissa is also very much into music and almost never takes off her headphones – seen often asleep with them still on.

#28 J.D. Smith

#30 – Bench Jockey (Alex Aronson)

| November 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

Most people don’t have to try to be a superhero. They just are. Alex Aronson tried really, really, REALLY hard to be one.

And he’s terrible at it.

In all honesty, “terrible” is an unfair descriptor. He’s not wholly incompetent at being a hero, it’s just that there are a lot of people much, much, much better at it than he is. Better organized. More skillfull. More capable of remembering if they parked their car in front of a fire hydrant. Alex was once described in a newspaper profile of superheroes as “meaning well”.

By all means, Alex isn’t a bad guy, and he’s kind of irrepressably positive about his position in life, even if he does find his never-ending string of robberies and crimes foiled by happenstance, accident or by someone else a bit frustrating. But when your only superpower is an advanced level of prestidigitation, there’s only so much you can do against a raging, 500-pound human behemoth.

Still, Alex is determined to be a hero, and rather than becoming a complete joke, he has gained a small retinue of dedicated fans, who see him as the everyman answer to the people streaking across the sky who don’t interact with day-to-day citizens anymore. He can’t jump over a building, has generally awful taste in almost everything, but he really does live the job, and believes a day spent working with children in need is just as good as stopping a robbery or a murder. He is a little deluded, sure, but he’s the kind of person who would show up to bail an acquaintance he’d just met once out of jail. He’s kind of embraced the nickname of “Bench Jockey”, given to him by a much bigger, stronger superhero. No, he’s never going to stop a plane from crashing, but he’s still important, in his own way.

| November 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

Post#16 — Captain Silverfox: Is an anthropomorphic cartoon character set in the Star Trek universe. I designed this character to be a part of my Trek newsletter (USS Silver Fox Newsletter, a chapter of starfleet-command.com).

Unfortunately, this will be my last posting for this year’s Challenge. I’m kinda disappointed with myself for putting out this small a number of pictures. Part of the reason was scheduling, and part of it was me just not feeling like drawing during parts of the month. It was not a lack of creativity, as I had months before this year’s Challenge to whip out more than enough characters (and more characters as the month moved on).

But, that doesn’t mean that this year’s challenge wasn’t worth the effort. The month’s concentrtated push to create all these characters showed me where my strongths and weaknesses are as an artist. Parts of the illustrations I did add this year was an improvement over last year’s efforts. One thing that helped me was having the time to sketch out and expand on each character I developed. This is a common practice; the artist doesn’t just settle for just one solution to a problem, but looking at a character from a number of angles (situations, interactions with other characters, etc.).

Thus, I’m glad to have been part of this Challenge this year. See you guys next year!

| November 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

Post#15 — Lester: is apart of my “Foxy and the Toon Agents” series of characters. In this world of cartoon super spies, Lester is “the Kid”. He is the young kid who brings youthful enthusiasm to this realm of action and adventure (he is the mouse that roared); and figures he knows enough to add himself to the mix. He has seen all the super spy movies, read all the super spy books, and even roleplays Dungeon and Dragons. The trouble is enthusiasm can’t make up for knowledge and experience. Until he lerans that, he is makes himself little more than a pest for the professionals in the field.

| November 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

Post#14 — Agent X: is apart of my “Foxy and the Toon Agents” series of characters. Agent X is an anthropomorphic cartoon character in a world of cartoon superspies. In that world, Agent X’s face has never been seen. All anyone has ever seen of him is a large hulking figure in the shadows. He is a danger, a monster, and a terror to all that have run all against him.
