#13- Wicked Annabella
Rumour has it that Annabella once was a fair maid with a faint interest for the occult. The daughter of a noble gentleman from a long line of royal paupers, whose plan included marrying her to an old, crooked merchant from the city.
Young Annabella gathered all her powers and knowledge with a single purpose: to get the merchant to refuse her. When every hate potion and anti-lust elyxir failed, she desperately took a disfiguring charm on herself.
But even that was of no use, and Annabella was married to the disgusting man, now frustrated, ugly and crooked as he. That’s when she turned him into a frog and ran to the swamps, to live forever as a lonely maiden witch.
#12 The Hoodie Mob
The Hoodie Mob
Gorillaz meets the Newsboy Legion — or alternatively the Unseelie Court by way of Misfits.
They are rowdy mob of miscreants, partiers, and general hooligans known as THE HOODIE MOB, who act as a network of informants and a Greek chorus of sorts for DAVID WISE, who they’ve cheekily nicknamed “The Hard Manâ€. They seem to show up at very coincidental times, and seem to know more about Wise than they let on, which makes him wonder at times if they’re actually fully real, or some side effect of the experiment.
In response to society’s moral panic over ‘hoodie-wearing youth’, the group calls themselves the Hoodie Mob, using the fear of deviancy to cover the altogether weirder shit the group is up to.

#12 Steven Butler – Mourner
The sun shouldn’t shine on the first of the month. It just isn’t right that the day is bright and warm when I visit Patricia. The sky should be cold and gray with a hard heavy rain.
Sometimes when the weather is just too nice, I think about skipping that day, telling myself that I’d make it up tomorrow. But I can’t do that, because tomorrow would become next week, and next week would become next month, until it becomes a perennial sometime soon. So no matter how beautiful it is, I go to the cemetery and walk down the rows of markers until I find hers.
I leave my flowers on the marker, maybe brush away a few dead leaves and then I go. I don’t say anything because she’s not there. Not in any sense. This is just a piece of stone over a plot of empty ground. Pat’s body was left on a field half a world away, no chance of recovery. I got a folded flag and an empty casket to stand in for her.
When I leave the grounds, that’s the moment I really dread. Right across from the cemetery entrance, there’s a nice little park. What stupid idiot thought that was a good idea? Because on those sunny days, I drive out onto the street and see the children playing on swings and screwing around on the slides. And I just sit there waiting to drive, cursing the stupid shit that I used to be for ever thinking “There’d be time.â€
#11 – Jasmine
Jasmine is a well-known member of The Collections Agency. The collections group is a multi-city organization which works in agreement with the local governments to collect wanted individuals. These are not criminals, per say. To be criminals, they would have to be accused of a crime. In these cases, they are indivduals who owe others a debt. In many cases, this has to do with the conflicting feudal and merchant societies throughout the regions surrounding the inland sea. Feudal lords might lay claim to an individual who skipped off form their lands with belongings the Lord believes are theirs. Or it might be a skilled tradesman who never finished repaying his guild dues. In some cases it might be an errant husband a wife suspects of adultery and wishes collections to catch and present evidence to support a legal divorce (or simply forcing the bum to accept his fatherly responsibilities).
The Collections have two very specific rules: 1. They do not go after people who are violent. It endangers their agents and is better left to to law enforcement authorities. 2. There must be proof presented of a debt, ownership, etc. The rest of hte rules are a little more complex, and involving proving a debt, what is acceptable for the debt, etc. But we are talking about a system where people can still be bought and sold (ie. slavery in many various forms, including self-accepted indentured servitude). And more importantly, a system where mass-machinery does not exist, and a person’s skills, knowledge, talent, and personhood can be a very desirable asset.
Jasmine has been an gent for almost ten years, and in that time, she has brought in many people and pieces of property, and is most noted for having absolutely no fear of Wizards. In fact, Wizards are known to recognize her on site. And run. She doesn’t play ‘fair’ with them and has a very devices and tricks of her own, despite having no talent for The Word itself. She’s an excellent swordsman (woman) and has a sweet diplomacy about her that has aided her many times across a number of countries. She is also well known for having one of hte broadest cultural knowledges amongst the organization, being an ex-gypsy herself. Her father disowned her when he found out she was working for an organization working with the government, until she insisted on returnin home each year with a new exotic (expensive) liquor to add to his collection. It only took a few good bottles of Kirche and a night of drinking for him to embrace her again.
Jasmine and her partner are given the task of bringing in Leandra. A task she accepts gleefully (because Leandra has a high price on her head), but soon sees might be more complicated than it’s worth. But after several run ins, and finally pinning Leandra down long enough to speak with her, Jasmine has the opportunity to offer Leandra a few ways out of the situation Leandra would never have thought of for herself. (And Jasmine still profits!)
#10 – Georgius Greniczer
Georgius is a gruff, short-tempered and generally unagreeable old man. But he is also a brilliant Wizard, spending much of his time charting the interelationships of various materials and developing new ways to use sub-sets of The Word to better control and shape magic. Though he has the respect of many of his peers for his studies and findings, he has very few friends because of his consistently deteriorating demeanor. As he has aged (over a long 200 years, lengthened by magic), his bones and joints and constitution have failed him slowly. Now life is a series of medications from Maria Toella, canes and walking implements and attempts to keep his body working another year. He keeps much of this from his colleagues and peers, though, so to most people, he is simply a perpetually annoyed and irritable individual.
He hides another secret of his condition, which terrifies him more than the deterioration of his body. He is slowly loosing control of his senses. He has already had two apprentices taken away from him, and has chosen to move himself to a more remote section of the castle ground, up in a tower connected to the facility by old stairs. It is at this point that he is given Leandra, who is warned of his ill temper (this was her master BEFORE Thadeus. She was perhaps ten when she was told to help Georgius). Over the course of two years she spent helping him with his studies, research and measurements, though, she grew to respect the old man greatly. Her meek attitude and constant apologies were a nusiance to him at first, until he realized she genuinely wanted to help and be acknowledged. When he began to see that she actually had enough of a mind to grasp his work, he actually showed her the occasional smile. These smiles unfortunately came as often as his rages. He was grab her wrist and shove her around, or toss his laboratory implements at her. It grew to the point that she would appear the next day with bruises that he could not remember, or could not understand the reasons for his previous anger. He was slowly loosing grip on his emotions, and the pain of his aging years did not help.
Leandra never judged him for it. She would simply nod and continue her work in the naive belief that if she did better, he wouldn’t have reason to be mad.
One day, a few years later, his rage and madness grew so great that he grabbed Leandra and shoved her, and finally kicked her down the stairs leading up to his laboratory. He passed out, and she was fond by one of the dormitory mothers, concerned that she was out past her curfew. She was taken to Maria Toella, who refused to believe that she had fallen ‘by accident’ without Georgius giving notice to the other Wizards. Within a week a quiet, secret committee was discussing Georgius and his actions in recent years, and by the en of the week, Leandra was forbidden from seeing him again, and Georgius was denied any further apprentices. Leandra tried ot plead that he was a good teacher, but as a younger Wizard, her words fell on deaf ears. Georgius, finally faced with the severity of his own mental deterioration, simply closed the doors of his study and kept to himself in self-exhile.
#12 – Thunderclap
Shauna Jacobs, codename Thunderclap, 31. Shauna’s the powerhouse of her team and a single mother of two darling children. With a bit of a wild streak, she’s seen a lot of the world and done a lot with her life already – ask her for stories about the Peace Corps – but if it seems like having kids would make a super settle down, Shauna sees things with a new resolve. She was a dangerous hero before, but now she has something to defend, and she is positively fearsome. Funny, strong, warm and occasionally short-sighted, she’s Mercy’s best friend and spoke up for her when she wanted to rejoin the team without powers. Shauna’s powers include pressure control and the mom stare. You know the one I’m talking about.
#8 Tante Nameh
#8 Tante Nameh
This is the 1st character in a story I’m tossing around about an oppressively matriarchal culture. Because unlike many feminists would like to believe, men aren’t the only ones capable of despotism, oppression, delusions of grandeur, and warmongering.
Tante Nameh was strong. But of course, she had to be to lead a House the size and power of hers. She followed the teachings of the mothers before her and found no cause to doubt any of their tenets. After all, it was a strict adherence to the Ways that had brought her people as far as it had, and none of their neighbor nations could dispute this, even those that claimed serious grievances against the Seven Sisters Dominion.
Those nations might have even gone as far as criticizing Tante Nameh, although not publicly and not to her face. Which was really, in the end, all she could ask. Calling to task those who called her a bigot would only bring to light the fact that her presence reached far deeper than any of her enemy imagined. And if they wished to believe that her mindset was one of delusion, all the better for her. After all, believing your opponent deluded would inevitably lead to overconfidence, a fatal weakness and a trait she always described as exceedingly masculine.
As if it were bigotry not to ignore the physical evidence which was daily presented before her. Evidence as simple as that soft and delicate sack which males carried prominently between their legs. Evidence of their inability to hide their feelings, their passions, their… arousal. Clearly they had not the skills to control their urges, shackled as they were by their own physiology. Even their superior physical strength was evidence of how far the male body had to go to compensate for its vulnerabilities. Strong as a man may be, he would never be strong enough to bear a child. And it was no terribly complicated task to convince a man’s body to plant its seed, even when the man in question might not wish to.
Tanteh Nameh did not fear men any more than she might fear a draft horse or an elegantly turned weapon. The trick was to ensure you were the one wielding it. And being the head of Bear House, she should be the one to speak of weapons.
Being the Elder of Bear House also meant that she had no room for weaknesses, either in the powerful blooded men who kneeled to her or in the spirited daughters who carried her name. Or in herself, which meant that although she may not have hid her silver hair she carried herself ramrod straight regardless of how strenuously her joints may ache. She did not make a single move without purpose and she could still take down a fighter half her age, be they male or female.
On the days she felt all her years bear down on top of her and her bed tried to keep her down past dawn, she gripped tightly to her Purpose. She who knew, more than any other House might, exactly how serious that purpose was. Crow and Bee may think that she acted in order to bring more goods, wealth, and land to the Sisters, but one need not be Crow to know that the Sisters had more than enough coin and supplies. And Turtle may rail as much as she wished, arguing at every council that Bear House was bringing fire upon their doorstep, but none of this would blind her.
Most Houses were so lulled into complacency that they forgot their deeper History. All the reasons why the Sisters came to be were conveniently ignored in the name of civility. House Turtle might remain starkly vigilant in their defense, but Bear House were the only ones still willing to admit the truth. No House of the Dominion would ever be safe while any Man walked unclaimed upon the earth, willing and capable to pick up arms against whomever He may wish. Dominion. Dominion from sea to sea. That was her Purpose. Not in the name of gains or power, but in the name of total security for all the Seven Houses. And nothing, not a single living thing that was capable of bleeding was going to sway House Bear from this one course. This was the fire that glowed behind Tante Nameh’s icy gaze. This was the truth that caused all but the strongest willed to drop their eyes when dealing with the Elder of House Bear.
#12 – Jack Dempsey – Actor, Martial Actor
Jack Dempsey was the last of the great actors of 2026. His dashing smile and trademark Kung-Fu made him the action hero other actors wanted to be for more than a decade. His star as an action hero finally lost its luster in the last series of movies he made, Planet Raiders III: The Unforsaken. The movie, while grossing well, barely covered the production costs, and the injuries incurred by Jack’s drinking problem caused his agent and the company Screen Brothers to finally drop his contact.
“We love you, Jack, but we’re gonna have to let you go. There is a new wind blowing and it’s AI-CGI,” his agent Florence Butterman told him over the vidcam. He was sitting in his Malibu home drinking his morning Mai Tai and nursing yesterday’s hangover.
“You are not serious. That stuff they do with computers and factors?” Demsey had a bit of a slur going already. Florence just grimaced and tried to ignore it. “Damn fake actors…”
“They are not fake actors. They are based on real people who used to be actors. Many of the screen tests have been quite favorable and several hundred movies were released straight to the ‘Net from Nollywood and Ballywood. If we want to keep up we have to do our part to stay with the times. Those Nigerians are eating our lunch in southern Africa and they have already expanded into the South American markets. I’m sorry, Jack, the margins are just too tight nowadays for living actors.” Florence looked down at her watch.
“What, you got someplace to be? You too busy for the man who made you rich? Everything you have in that house, I bought you, Florence. How can you be thinking about turning your back on me? What about helping me out? Can you farm me out to one of your friends over at Light Industrial Films? I heard through the ‘vine they are still planning on making movies with real actors.” Jack downed the rest of his drink and nodded to his butler to bring him another one. The butler winced and then moved on reluctantly to bring another. There was, however, no reason to rush.
“Look, Jack, I am not blowing you off. I will be putting in a word for you, but I would not get my hopes up with Light Industrial Films. They are still going to be making movies with actors, but they are going to be working in the mountains of Tibet, telling the stories of the remaining survivors of the Great Purge of Tibet in 2016. That’s going to be done on location with local actors. I might be able to get you a role on the Chinese side as a consultant or as a white who worked as a servant to the Chinese.”
“A slave? That is the best hope you can give me? A slave in a Chinese melodrama? You got to be kidding me. You know what, Florence? I don’t want your goddamn pity. I don’t need you. I’m Jack fucking Dempsey, the best thing to happen to Hollywood since Clint Eastwood. I’ll be all right.” Jack stood up and pointed at the monitor. “When I make my comeback, you remember it was me who told you it would happen.”
Having stood up too quickly after having twelve Mai Tais before breakfast, Jack Dempsey fell to the floor unconscious. Florence Butterman shook her head, watched the butler throw back the Mai Tai and signed off. She did not think about Jack Dempsey again until the Academy Awards mentioned his name seven years later.
“And the nominations for Best Actor in a Science Fiction Film are: Kren Davis in Sundiver’s Six, Kazuo Koke in Inner Space, and Jack Dempsey in Planet Raiders: Neutron Star. No, no, folks, I’m just kidding. You know scifi hasn’t paid an actor in years. The award will go to the company that has created the most awesome representation of these amazing actors in their AI-CGI movies created completely on computer. I mean, can anyone remember the last time anyone saw that drunken bum, Jack Dempsey?”
The theater explodes in laughter, that long mean laughter when you are talking about someone behind his back. The laughter that comes from an uncomfortable position that you know you might find yourself in, akin to being in the bathroom without toilet paper. The doors fly open from the side of the stage and Jack Dempsey staggers onto the stage. A security guard with a swollen eye tries to stop him and is returned back stage with a sound kick.
“How’s that?” was picked up from the mikes all over the stage. “Real enough for you? You might want to put some ice on that. So how is everybody? Go on, open that envelope. No, let me.” Jack snatches the envelope from the comedian who stands shocked and quiet on the stage.
“The Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction Film goes to… Factor Jack Dempsey. Factor Jack Dempsey can’t be here to get his award, cause he was made on a damn computer, so Jack Dempsey is going to take that award for him.” The young woman who carried out the statuette hands it to Jack and scurries off the stage.
The director continues to move the cameras around and film everything as if this was expected. “Since I am here to take my award from my factor, yes, FAKE ACTOR, I think I should say a few words. All you people sitting out there laughing at me, thinking you are better than me won’t have to worry about this because you can really act. You can kiss my ass.” A collective gasp sweeps the room.
Jack reaches into his jacket and pulls out a flask, takes a hit and continues. “Once upon a time, I was just like you, thought I was something, on the top of my game and nothing could ever touch me. I had a great time, spent my money, partied all day and all night. I made twenty movies in my career and most sucked. I know that, now. I watched them when I was living in the streets, sitting outside of Electronic Huts playing my movies while I panhandled.”
Jack looks down and pauses for a second. “I realized I got paid because it was what people wanted to see, not because I was any good. I got ahead of myself and didn’t pay attention when I needed to. I did not see the world changing around me. I signed contracts without reading them. And all of you did too. Because if you hadn’t, you would not be sitting here today.”
Three security guards came to the edge of the stage and hesitantly began to make their approach. None of them were in a hurry to tackle Jack Dempsey because while he may have been an actor, he did his own martial arts movies, and those were not stunts. Many a stunt double went to the hospital, and the tabloids loved talking about it. He waved at them and made the sign for two minutes, and they retreated to the edge of the stage.
“I just wanted to say to Florence Butterman, I am sorry I didn’t listen to you when you told me to read everything. You told me that the industry would take advantage of my stupidity. You see, I don’t have anyone to blame about Factor Jack Dempsey. In my contracts, I made it possible for him to exist. In my contracts, I signed away my likeness to be used in any kind of AI-CGI based movie for the next twenty years. And they do not have to pay me anything because I did not read the contract well enough.” His voice was bitter and sharp.
“But the best part is that I had time on my hands and more than a few favors. I know that almost none of you read your contracts, either. So when you lose your mind, or piss someone off, or when they get tired of you getting old or weak or crotchety, they will replace you with a factor, too. So, you guys enjoy your awards. One day there won’t be anyone in the theater to accept one, unless they can teach a computer to walk, too. Y’all have a good night. Come on, boys, I haven’t got all night.”
It took twenty security guards before Jack Dempsey was dragged off stage. The Academy Awards had never had higher numbers.

This story appears in Hayward’s Reach, an anthology of short stories, published in November 2011.
Don “The Dragon” Wilson was not an inspiration for this story directly. I had written the story before I discovered his history and it seemed to be a perfect match for my story. He has a great history as an actor and fighter but most people can’t remember a single movie he appears in, even though those movies themselves are famous.
#12- The King of Carrot Flowers
From Neutral Milk Hotel’s song of the same title:
When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet
And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy’s shoulder
And dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other’s bodies were for
And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go
And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try

No. 12- Drea
Name: Drea
Age: 100 years old (in dragon years)
Ethnicity: Dragon turned human?
Occupation: Guard Dragon, Bodyguard, Adventurer, Mercenary
Short Background:
Drea started out life as a dragon. She lived with her dragon family, played dragon games, and laughed the dragon’s laugh (if there is such a thing).
Then her entire clan was butchered and she was the only one who managed to escape. As luck would have it, her path led her to the castle of a powerful sorceress who offered her protection and a place to stay. The catch was that Drea had to be a guard against anyone who came to take the sorceress’ secrets. For a time, things worked out and Drea was the perfect guard. It also helped to add to the sorceress’ reputation. So much so that many kings and lords saw it as a wise move to align themselves with the sorceress. Many came as suitors, hoping that by winning her heart, they would also gain access to her power.
And there was where the trouble began.
Drea was too good of a body guard and ended up devouring many a suitor. It got to the point where the sorceress had to decide what to do. However, she didn’t want to kill Drea and decided to turn her into a human instead. No longer thirsty for blood, but still incredibly strong, Drea became the sorceress’ personal bodyguard. It was thought that the problems would end there.
They didn’t.
As a human, Drea went from being a danger to the suitors to a distraction. Suddenly, the men were coming to woo her instead of the sorceress. Jealous, the sorceress tried to turn her back. Drea escaped.
Now, she is traveling the world among people that used to fear her. She decided that the best way to see more of the world was to fall in with a band of mercenaries. And that’s what she did.
Design:
She looks like an average girl. She isn’t doesn’t really look that different from everyone else with the exception of the blue hair (but no one really questions it). The only giveaway is a trail of scales going down her back, though a person would have to get really close to see them (and that is not happening).
She is a mercenary so she dresses like a mercenary. No dresses or fancy clothing. Just practical “soldier of fortune” wear. Boots, pants, tight shirts, and headbands. Lots of headbands.
Terrible Harry
Terrible Harry came into town along with the other Traveling Graces. He has a difficult time behaving as the more gentle society did, and he likes it that way.
“Have you heard? The bird bird bird, the bird is the word!”
He likes to run around wildly, and freak out on people went they least expected it. Everybody likes Harry, and everyone is terrified. He’ll terrify you with his excited dancing and premonitions…
“A tic tic tic tic tic tic tic BOOM dynamite!”
#11 The Man Tamer
Killed during a hate crime, his soul is trapped in the whip that was used to strangle him.
And boy has he had time to practice using it, himself.
#11 (The Infinite) Tess Himmel
(The Infinite) Tess Himmel
Poor Tess. She’s always to vast or too small. Never the right size. She touches the infinite, it courses through her — it’s kind of her job to keep the universe going, just by being her. But she also feels, sometimes, ever so small, and then, when one can float in a bubble or get lost in the tall grass, the world seems full of gifts.
Her father was a German immigrant, her mother is Mongolian. A burgeoning punk/artist, her desperate parents sent her at 13 to the Madewell Girls’ Academy, a private ultraconservative Christian academy run by ex-radicals and bikers. They berated her, telling her she was small, nothing, a worm before Christ. Her rebellious nature meant she spent a lot of time in the Get Close to God room, essentially a small closet. She escaped into her imagination, and met an angelic being who offered her a deal: if she agreed to take on the responsibility of the Infinite, she would be allowed to escape. The Infinite wished to be mortal, but needed someone to mind the store while it was gone. Tess was determined to have the proper nature for the job.
After that Tess escaped the Academy easily, going to the City of Angels and blocking out her painful memories of that place. But eventually, she tires of the responsibility of the Infinite, and when she tires, she also remembers the Academy, and begins to feel smaller. (Since she still has the Power of the Infinite, she actually gets very small and this causes trouble until she can get her mind right again).
But the Infinite has gotten lost, and forgotten its true nature. The angelic being returns and tells her that if she ever wants to return to a human life again, she needs to find it, or she’ll have to be the Infinite for eternity. She agrees to help search, but she has mixed feelings about being a normal person again.

Tribal Mother/Seer from My Novel “Mentor”
Sorry, unnamed at this time, but is usually referred to as The Mother, or The Seer.
Metaphysical secrets passed down from one Tribal Mother/Seer to another, each generation adding to the store of lore and insight precious to the tribe. Held in great esteem, and with good reason, the Tribe does all it can to protect and nurture its Seer and her protege. Her legs have all but given out on her due to an attack as a child by one of the many savage beasts that hunt the Under City’s shadows.
The current Seer in Under City has not yet chosen a replacement. Some say because no one is worthy. Others that she desires to have Marnal (see 2011 Day 01 Marnal) as her protege, but Marnal pursues other interests. But The Mother is getting old. Very old and the people are concerned that she may leave them without a properly trained Seer. No one knows the will of a Seer of course until she makes it known, and she does have someone in mind. A least expected someone.
