Her shape and color make her look like a piece of Kentucky Fried Chicken. In battle, her brain functions like it is deep fried as well. Squirrely!

#20 – Ferdinand von Zeppelin – the Cid

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

In every Final Fantasy game, there is a Cid. Sometimes he’s a mechanic, sometimes he’s a warrior, but he’s usually connected to airships in some way. Personally, I think that’s half the reason Cid is such a well-liked figure in the series; seeing him means you’ll soon be able to skip over those obnoxious mountain ranges.

But anyway, if I were to cast human history in the same light as a Final Fantasy game, Ferdinand von Zeppelin would be our Cid. The scion of a noble family, Ferdinand joined the army at a young age. His interest in airships was kindled when he fought in the American Civil War, acting as a balloon observer for the Union Army of the Potomac. The designs von Zeppelin later penned would lead to the construction of the first truly usable airships in human history. Von Zeppelin never lived to see the shutdown of Germany’s airship program due to the Treaty of Versailles, or the ultimate destruction of its PR in the Hindenburg disaster, but regardless of the fate of his particular inventions, Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s work brought forth the age of mass air transit, which was a huge factor in creating our modern world.

#8 Rogelio “Rotor Mouth” Torres

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

Art by Michael Powell (@mpowelljr)
Words by Rolando Garcia (@roshow)

He’s lived his whole life in the projects, selling drugs since the age of 11. Today he runs his own little crew that’s doing good enough business to move his mom out of the old neighborhood. On the weekends he MCs and battle raps at local clubs.

His stage name is “Rotor Mouth.” It’s the name his friends call him because he talks so damn much.

He always knew he was abnormally persuasive, so he used that skill to hustle his make money. Then in his late teens he started exhibiting signs of telekinesis, moving small objects. Rogelio realizes his powers run deep but he doesn’t really care to do much with them.

An underground army general, however, gets it. His scientists have observed Rogelio and learned that his persuasion isn’t an intangible telekinetic power. Rogelio doesn’t realize this but when he use telepathy to persuade people  he’s actually  re-arranging the atomic composition of their brains. The general hopes that this physical trait can be duplicated and weaponized. He orders his agents and goons to bring in Rogelio.

Soon, Rogelio will find himself on the run…

# 20 – Ponut

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

Ponut is a living statue on one of the moons of Saturn.  He is able to answer any question asked of him, although sometimes the answer comes in the form of a puzzle.

[In 1974, at the age of 12, I drew a series of “comic books” detailing the adventures of Merrill, a 15-year-old human boy, in the Other Land, an invisible dimension which co-exists with our own.  The characters I am submitting throughout the 30 Days are the inhabitants of the Other Land.]

Garrett works at an accounting firm in New York. Though he’s living in the “Big Apple,” to which he excitedly moved after graduating college in one town over from his home town in rural Pennsylvania, his life isn’t nearly as exciting as he thought it would be after the move.

He’s all and out average, a fact which he is well aware of. Of course he has his little quirks, just like anyone, but he only wears them when he’s vacuuming.

#19 Boss Gravity

Boss Gravity

Boss Gravity

“What goes up…”
An up-and-coming boxer who was constantly tempted to turn to a life of crime, the man now known as Boss Gravity was injured in the same accident that resulted in The Smart Brothers having to leave their old headquarters. B.G. lost his arms, and that made the choice between boxing and crime. He was refitted with experimental “gravity arms” designed for work in deep space, and began taking over the illegal super-science racket with the same single-minded determination that had led him to victory in the ring.

“I’m that fundamental force mayne.”
A lot of crime lords, mafiosos and thugs, all unhappy with his domination of the experimental tech racket, have tried to bring him down. Most of them have either knuckled under or disappeared. His street name comes from the resulting truism, in crime as well as science: “You can’t fight gravity.”

“I don’t think you understand the gravity of your situation.”
The cops have turned to the Smart Brothers out of desperation, and they’ve managed to disrupt Boss Gravity’s operations. He realizes that they’re responsible for his condition, and has begun plans to destroy them, utterly.

Also, and it’s a small thing? Some chump-ass rapper’s out there calling himself Boss Gravity, “as an homage”, “out of respect”. This just get’s under B.G.’s skin, and he sees it as an example of how the universe is out to get him. He’s vowed to end this rapper’s career as well.

“These arrogant assholes always thinkin’ they can fly. But Gravity — it always brings you down in the end.”

#19 “Searchlight”

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: The Beacon

To read a sketchy comic introduction to The Beacon featuring some horribly drawn stick figures, feel free to visit this photobucket album.

Searchlight is a registered government hero working for the I.P.P. His job is to track down and tag heroes who do freelance and other unregistered work, so the I.P.P. can keep tabs on them. In general this type of work is considered illegal if not sanctioned by the I.P.P., but putting a superhero in jail doesn’t bode well for the new government agency’s publicity. Plus, most of these guys could break out of jail in the blink of an eye.

So instead, the I.P.P. sends Searchlight to keep an eye on them. Searchlight’s powers are such that he always knows where superheroes are, so that makes them easier to follow, with only one small problem—Searchlight can’t distinguish one superhero on his radar from another until he physically touches them. That’s where The Beacon comes in handy—calling the superheroes down from the sky so Searchlight can touch them.

Searchlight is not really a fan of his work. He finds it amoral to track people without their consent. He only works for the I.P.P. out of a sense of obligation. Because he has powers, he feels like he has to use them. Searchlight is the same age as The Beacon, and likewise just out of college, but he had this job all set up and waiting for him.

He doesn’t maintain a very professional candor, preferring instead to rebel when possible while still keeping his highly paying job and Secret Identity. He rebels in small ways: with his appearance (he dyes his hair black with red highlights only visible in just the right light and spikes it with gel, leaving a small braid that hangs down in the front), and with his behavior. In many ways he is still a boy rather than a man, a stark contrast to The Beacon who acts well beyond her years.

Day 19: Harvey Ride

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

Character #19, Harvey Ride. Ok this is the last yellow-eyed character for a while I promise.

Harvey is a big, tough canine, standing about 6’7” tall. The red thing on his back is known as a Venom, a little creature that’s formed a symbiotic relationship with his soul. The combinations of Venom and creature are known as Venomamillians. These creatures are the heart and namesake of the Venomamillia story line.

Harvey is a senior Venomamillian in the score of the Venom forces. After working for the captain of the forces, Captain Verother, for a while, it took a rookie to make him see the wrongs in the job he did. After a few encounters with him, Harvey leaves the ranks.

Harvey’s Venom specializes in disarming. Its “arms” are stunners, and can generate electricity to paralyze.

Harvey’s entire family line, the Rides, have been known for having a misfortune in their lives. Harvey believes he has yet to see his misfortune. I wonder what it could be?

20 – Shadowhawk by Beausephus

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME:  Shadowhawk

DATE OF CREATION: Late 1980’s.

CONCEPT:  A fusion of Batman and Snake Eyes from GI JOE this silent character patrols the rooftops and hidden alleyways prowling for trouble and then descends to dispense street level justice with efficiency and high tech flair.

_______________________________

Shadowhawk was a character that starred in many small comic strips and hand stapled pamphlets.  In the original design, the costume was very basic – a boulbus helmet, metallic bracelets covered in mini-missles, and a bandolier of weaponry resembling Batman’s utility belt in an act of overt swiping.  Shadowhaek, if I remember correctly, was a cop by day (complete with full on 1980s moustache) and vigilante by night.  In his numerous adventures he fought character in scenarios inspired by GI JOE cartoons and “KRAVENS LAST HUNT.”

In the reinterpretation of my elementary school design, I kept the color scheme (toning down the bright teal a bit) and the characters giant “wings” that run the sides of his torso and allow him to glide along.  I’ve removed the missle launcher bracelets and stylized the helmet a bit to make it less like 1950s Sci-Fi pace helmet and a bit more predatory to in some way refer to the Shadowhawk name.

The best thing about this character was in the early 1990s when IMAGE comics first formed.  Founding Image Creator, Jim Valentino, had been writing one of my favorite serie, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, for MARVEL and had just relased his own creator owned IMAGE property, Shadowhawk.  At a regional comic convention I brought him some color copies of the Shadowhawk character and comics I had made years earlier.  He was very gracious and really liked my childhood zeal for superheroes comparing the work to that of his son who was close to the age I had been when I drew my first Shadowhawk comics.  Whether he was just being a pro or really appreciated my attempt to share my fanboy appreciation for his work, I’ll never know, but his friendliness made a big impression on me as to what it means to apprecaite positive compliments and how to act when someone is being genuine even when there is a line growing behind them.  Mr. Valentino made a life-long fan of me that day, and no matter wht I always buy a comic with his name on it to in some small way show my appreciation for his five minutes of time when I was a kid.

Thanks for checking out my stuff.

We had retrieved a genetic sample off of one of the bodies, and our suspicions were confirmed: The gene sequences matched exactly.  It’s surmised now that, beneath the surface, the feminine forms are in fact attached to the mysterious animal; Mere shape shifting, temporary projections extended from the large alien creature.

# 14 Randy Ratowski

| November 20, 2011 | 0 Comments

As a hit-man, Randy had a hard time murdering those who his bosses told him to take out. He would always want to give them a second chance and forgive them. This obviously made Randy run into problems, and was told to either get rid of his conscious or he would be fired. So he went out and got himself a ridiculous hair cut and since then whenever anyone gives him a funny look, the urge to kill comes naturally. Randy has always been good about thinking outside the box.

#13 Mr. Nerd

On a personal note, Mr. Nerd is the first character I ever made up back in grade school. He was a mix of Jon Arbuckle and every Far Side character ever. He is still on the move and always on the look out for Mrs. Nerd.

Going in he believed it was a true story. He was fine until the scene where the hippie opens up the freezer and the girl is in there, still alive. It just really got to him, that this really happened and all, that he jumps at every other thing.
