#22 – Jim Henson – Puppeteer

| November 22, 2011 | 2 Comments

The death of Jim Henson actually came as quite a shock to my younger self. I was barely 7 years old at the time, and so Mr. Henson’s creations were still a big, big part of my life. I think a part of me was just terrified that all of the characters he had created would simply poof out of existance along with him, but of course they didn’t. It took me a while to understand that the really great artists leave behind work that lives well beyond their lifetime, and this was true of Jim Henson’s work in a very literal sense.

Puppeteers, also called Puppetmasters, are a rather rare class in RPGs. They tend to fill the same gamespace as either Monster Tamers — sending critters into battle while they hang back — or Black Mages — using their creepy critters to cast offensive magic — so Puppetmasters don’t tend to show up unless the roster of classes is genuinely huge. Mr. Henson’s design here is actually against the grain of most Puppetmasters, too, since this class tends to emphasize the creepy puppet aspect. And Muppets could certainly do creepy (I point you to the Skeksis of The Dark Crystal for examples), but Mr. Henson himself was basically a big puppy dog.

#22: Wrest

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Real Name: Kelly Hart

Age: 28

Height: 5’6″

Weight: 129 lbs.

Powers: Telekinesis that also emits mystical light energy

Character info: Wrest is a character I made up when I was about 17 years old; she’s pretty much the same except originally her name was “Warp” and her powers were slightly different. She doesn’t really conform to the standard superhero spandex club, opting to wear her own clothes when going into a necessary “battle”. I currently have plans for her to appear in one of two different comic/graphic novels I am working on.

#23 and #24 – Mister Neat and Mister Tidy

| November 22, 2011 | 2 Comments

I grew up on spooky English shows where budget’s were pretty non-existent and the props people had to be inventive. For some reason this made the ordinary always seem more unusual for me.

I was channel a combination of Roger Hargreaves Mr Men books and the television show Sapphire and Steel on this one – and Jonathan got the vibe instantly!

The art is from an unused page in issue one of The Hero Code – something which was re-worked and dropped, but might make it’s way into a future issue.

#6 – Rosie Richards

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Rosie Richards of The Majors

Rosie Richards is the head of operations for the Motor City Majors. She has acted as the executive board’s advisor for the last 8 years, but was never promoted to be an actual board member due to Abraham Arnold’s staunch misogynist ways. Now that the old man has passed on and fresh blood has entered the organization, Rosie is finally getting the credit she deserves. She has her work cut out for her by trying to keep Alex in check and getting Eddie up to speed with the day-to-day workings of an elite level franchise. Her determination, passion for the game and natural business instincts keep the team running and save the Pratt brothers from looking foolish as newbie owners.

#5 – Billy Lincoln

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Billy Lincoln of The Majors

I know – I’m WAY behind on this one. I’ll do my best to play catch up in the next week or so.

This is Billy Lincoln. He is the cartoon equivalent of RIM CEO Jim Balsillie, who unsuccessfully tried to relocate 3 teams back to his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Known for trying to make underhanded deals that circumvented the NHL’s policy on franchise ownership, Balsillie made a lot of enemies in his short time as a potential suitor for team ownership.

I decided to take the character one step further and make him an absolute slimeball. Billy Lincoln is a corporate tycoon who seeks to pluck the Motor City Majors from the Arnold family and relocate the team back to his hometown. He tries a number of different plans which are foiled by members of the Majors organization. He will end up acting as the foil to the Pratt brothers, and will be a thorn in their sides on many occasions.

Another quickly-sketched iPhone upload while on the road. This is a half-cheat. Fluxx is an old super hero character of mine, but Statis is new. I was trying to come up with a partner for Fluxx that would be his opposite.

# 22 – Mark

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Mark could be described as a warlock, although he would deny that his power is magical.  Instead, he possesses strong telepathic and telekinetic ability, and also has the power to manipulate matter and energy.

[In 1974, at the age of 12, I drew a series of “comic books” detailing the adventures of Merrill, a 15-year-old human boy, in the Other Land, an invisible dimension which co-exists with our own.  The characters I am submitting throughout the 30 Days are the inhabitants of the Other Land.]

#22 – Rissandir den Raud

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Rissandir den Raud is a prince of the kingdom of Ardenspire. This is a kingdom that has been at peace for two generations, ever since his grandfather, Alden den Fevre, conquered the last of his enemies and crushed them beneath his heel. It’s been a benign peace, however. Rissandir’s father, Raud den Alden, is an excellent peacetime king, and his people know prosperity and security.

This means that there’s not a lot for his sons to do. Rissandir is the middle of three. His older brother, Calaris (#21), is first in line for the throne, and is therefore honest, hardworking and boring. The youngest, Lennick, is only three, and therefore isn’t very interesting yet.

As a “spare prince,” Rissandir knows that he has no official purpose in the kingdom. Therefore, he decides to make one for himself.

In spite of readily available magic, Rissandir has decided that he wants to be able to fly on his own. After years of study and research, he develops his world’s first heavier-than-air aircraft. His brother Calaris is adamantly opposed to this – they have ways to fly that are magical and safe, why do this?

Why indeed…? Rissandir is determined to fly on his own, even if it kills him. Which it may well do.

#21 – Calaris den Raud

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Calaris den Raud is the Crown Prince of the kingdom of Ardenspire. This is a kingdom that has been at peace for two generations, ever since his grandfather, Alden den Fevre, conquered the last of his enemies and crushed them beneath his heel. It’s been a benign peace, however. Calaris’ father, Raud den Alden, is an excellent peacetime king, and his people know prosperity and security.

This means that there’s not a lot for his sons to do. Calaris is the eldest of three, and his next younger brother is the impulsive, inventive and somewhat un-princely Rissandir. The youngest, Lennick, is only three, and therefore isn’t very interesting yet.

Calaris finds value in stability and security. He knows he’s next in line for the throne, but he’s not interested in taking that responsibility yet. He’s risk-averse, conservative, and often bound to tradition.

When his brother decides to do something risky, ridiculous, and dangerous, Calaris knows it’s time for him to step in.

#20 – Angie Gallagher

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Five years ago, Melina Terrano was the hottest name in celebrity society. She made news nearly every day for her outrageous rich-girl antics. From a DUI on her 16th birthday to a two-week marriage when she was twenty, and two sex tapes, to say nothing of the reality TV shows, self-published magazines and fashion lines, there was nothing Melina Terrano could do that wouldn’t make the news.

Including disappearing completely.

After gaining a flash of insight into her shallow, meaningless life, Melina fled her California estate and headed east. She ended up in the small town of Fairport, TX. She changed her name to Angie Gallagher, put on some weight, and started a new life. For years she worked in the Fairport Library, finally having found something that she could do to help others.

Following a terrible fire in the library (see #10 – Sean Messinger), she is put in charge of a fundraiser. Her promotions attract the attention of a celebrity news website, who are eager to be the first to break the story of what happened to Melina Terrano. Whether she wants it or not.

#19 – Ezra Resnick

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

There was never any doubt that Ezra Resnick was going to have a tough time in life. He grew up in a small town with an alcoholic stepfather at home and bullies at school. If nothing changed, he probably would have been on a path to poverty and meaninglessness.

Instead, he finds that he has the ability to move through solid matter.

It happened accidentally the first few times, but after his chemistry teacher lectured about how electrons are supposed to repel each other, Ezra realized that he had a genuine superpower on his hands. He practices and plays with it, and then he makes a plan: on a trip to Washington DC, he decides that he’s going to visit the President in the Oval Office.

And there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do to stop him.

#18 – Starlight Moonwhispers

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Some people become hippies, other people have hippiedom thrust upon them. Starlight Moonwhispers was born a hippie.

Not really, though. She was born into a middle-class family, went to a nice high school and then off to a second-tier private college. It wasn’t until she fell in love with a man of extreme liberal passions that she turned vegan, stopped shaving, and adopted a new name. She quickly gathered friends, followers and hangers-on as an ardent activist for the environment and the animals.

As part of her daily routine, Starlight meditates. She finds a quiet place, sits down, and waits for the voice of Mother Earth to guide her. In her visions, she’s seen Gaia as “as uplifting, empowering, but terribly, terribly weak all at the same time. It was pale and thin and frail, but there was an inner strength that Starlight could see through her enlightened eyes.” That spirit implores Starlight to action, which leads to her and her activist group taking over the headquarters of a large oil company.

The next time Starlight Moonwhispers meditates, however, she has a very different meeting with the Earth Mother, and learns some very unsettling truths about the place that she – and humanity – has in the world.

#21 King Sexytime

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments
King Sexytime

King Sexytime

SEXY TIME SAYS RELAX

when low-key gay middle manager Kendall MacCready  says the magic word “SWAJAM” he transforms into anarchic pansexual libertine KING SEXYTIME, and gains superhuman powers:

The Passion of Sappho

The Orgone energy of Wilhelm Reich

The Willpower of Aleister Crowley

The Perception of James Joyce

The Intelligence of Anais Nin

The perversity of the Marquis de Sade

It’s not known where Kendall McCready goes when he says the magic word, but it’s implied that he can see what KS is doing, and he doesn’t generally approve. He’s usually reluctant to say the word, seeing KS as a disgusting pervert. But he hates King Sexytime’s nemesis even more: villainous, repressive (and repressed) RAMROD, an armored enforcer who commits deeds of ugliness and violence with his face covered, during the night, or during peaceful gatherings of people during the day. Ramrod is rumored to not be a cop at all (and his badge is usually covered up), but in fact a reclusive billionaire. King Sexytime stops Ramrod’s violent rampages, usually by making him really, really uncomfortable. He just wants this uptight guy to relax and let go a little bit. Is that so bad?

The comic he’s in is called SEXYTIME ADVENTURES, and it is not for younguns.

#22: St Peter

I had this crazy idea of doing the Saints as Super Heroes, and this just sort of grew on the page.

He’s St.Peter, special power over rocks and fish. 🙂

20 – The Prince of Jackdaws

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

For reasons not entirely clear, every three years, representatives of all the Jackdaws in Britain gather on Midusmmers eve in the tiny English village of Summerbrooke, to select the Prince of Jackdaws.  For reasons unknown to all but themselves, they always select a seven year old human child from the village, who will then be the Prince (or Princess) for three years.  Even former Princes have no idea exactly why they choose a human child, why they always gather in the shadow of the Church of St Daws to do it, or how they go about the selection process.  They almost always choose a child with black or at least dark hair, although there have been some exceptions, and they all always attend St. Daw’s Primary School.  As Prince, the child is given responsibility for making decisions for all the of the Jackdaws in the Country, although they don’t actually speak as such, but more seem to decide upon the Princes choice without actually asking him or her.  The Prince gains a few magical powers for the duration of holding the title, he is able to command Jackdaws to do things (although not to understand them) and teleport via Shadows.  The whole setup is rather bizzarre, but worthwhile, almost all former Princes go on to be successful in life, with at least one being Prime Minister – and whatsmore, they retain an uncanny nack for finding lost valuables.  The current Prince is Rupert Chan, whose parents actually moved to the village from Birmingham specifically to give him a chance of becoming the Prince.  Despite the popularity of this idea amoung many people, fortunatly the landowner is a fairly old fashioned sort and refuses to give permission for extra houses to be built to accomodate pushy parents “incase it breaks the magic”.

19 – Rutherford Duckworth III

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Despite his appearance of an eccentric but aimiable old man, Rutherford Duckworth III, also known as “The Ruddy Duck”, is considered by many in the spy trade to be the most dangerous man on the planet.  Not necessarily directly in a combat sense, although he is certainly an accomplished fighter, but because he runs the vast international spy network, which actually manages to remain secret in itself.  He has contacts everywhere, and even more people who owe him favours, and he is able to call both in to cause maximum damage to opponents.  He was a spy himself in his younger days, one whose tactic seemed to be being glaringly obvious to the point that noone would suspect he was a spy.  He still goes on the occassional mission, utilising his grappling hook umbrella and his cunning mind to outwit foes.  He tries to keep his mind sharp, by, amoung other things, playing chess by letter with Pato.

#20 Michael Howell – Negotiator

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Looking left and right, I ran across the street and stopped outside the phone booth. Glancing at my watch, I saw that I was three minutes early. The heavy duffel bag dug into my shoulder no matter how much I shifted it. Handing off the ransom is the part that I dread the most.

The initial contact is nerve-wracking, but there’s a routine to it. Both of us are trying to understand each other, learn the limits that we can push each other. They make demands, I make counter-demands. It’s dangerous, but at that point we both have an understanding. Continuing to talk is the only way that either of us is going to get what we want. They want money. I want the return of what was taken.

But the hand-off is the point where the relationship shifts. They know that they’re getting what they want, but then they start thinking. Did they make any mistakes? Did the victim see their faces or hear a name? It seems it’s better to be safe than sorry. They can take the money and lose the baggage. And there’s shit all that I can do about it.

All I can do is stand here and wait for a phone call.

22 – Power Rhino by Beausephus + Son

| November 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME:  Power Rhino

DATE OF CREATION: November 18, 2011

CONCEPT:  “There’s a a whole town of Rhinoceroses that live in a maze and there’s one Rhinoceros who has to protect Rhinoceros Land from people going through the maze to get the treasure.  Power Rhino is a superhero with a big sword and a sword on his leg.  He has a big cape because he is a good guy.”

_________________________________

So when the mood strikes my son (and that is quite often) and he wants to make up “superguys”, “superdudes”, “supermans”… I pull out a bunch of templates I made for him and he picks out everything from the style of boots to the color scheme of the various costume options presented before him.  I then draw quick sketch, and he edits, adds, etc…  I then draw up the character and he hangs them in his room…if they meet his ultimate judgement.  Then I make him come up with a story for each character.

____________________________________________

My 4 year old likes to draw mazes.  Now they may look like aimless scribbles to the untrained eye, but he will show you with exact precision what each oddly formed square is ( a trap, usually) and how the interweaving lines are actually paths that when he is finished will make perfect sense.  So, the other day he was guiding me through his newest maze and he lead me through a series of traps, jungles, volcanoes, a Rhinoceros Land, and a river before having to jump through another trap to get to the treasure.  Now I had him back up and tell me about this Rhinoceros Land.  Rhinoceros Land is just that, a land of Rhinoceroses who do magic and tell stories.  They have one Rhino called Power Rhino who carries a sword and protects them all from “bad guys who go in the maze to get the treasure.”

He really wanted a strait up superhero design with a rhino in a green spandex outfit, red mask, white gloves, and a blue cape…with a big sword and a sword strapped to his leg.  He really did not like the version drawn above.  He wanted a straight up superhero, but the big honkin’ sword concept got me thinking of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and then of the Joe Mad comic series “Battle Chasers.”  Then I realized that my kid was essentially describing to me the plot of the recent Thundercats series subplot involving a village of mystic forgetful elephants.   So I went with the RPG style costume pictured above.  he is not happy that the version he wanted is not posted here and he has sworn to do his own version which, if he finishes it, I will post below.

Thanks for checking out our ideas,

Beausephus+Son
