#30 – Gut Miners
They’re usually helpful little creatures, just don’t let them take you by surprise!
#17
Poor little dude just wants some straight teeth.
(Forgot the change the number on the template! Oops!)
#16
You don’t want to find this guy in your shoes in the morning (and he loves the taste of stale feet).
#14
This guy is kind of halfway between a billy goat gruff and the troll that lived under the bridge. It lives in pool drains, wells, sewers, and other dark damp places. If it doesn’t find you too boring maybe it’ll tell you about your future.
#13 – Margot
Margot is a character that I come back to again and again. Each time she appears she’s changed just a little bit but she’s always curious but a little bit surly. Margot is the main character for my monster project and is the one who is documenting all the different creatures.
#11 – Flue Fowl
These long-necked birds wedge themselves into your fireplace and grow from the heat of the flames.
#10
I don’t know much about this guy, but you probably want to keep you secrets to yourself when he’s around.
#9 – Creature under the bed
The monster under the bed really isn’t that scary – he just likes to lick feet. Always wear slippers and remember to jump!
#8
Another quick sketch this evening. This creature is usually heard not seen. At night she lurks in dark corners or just outside your window. All the bumps and and thumps and little scratches that you think you heard far off in the distance come from her.
#7
Just time for a quick sketch this evening. No name yet for this guy, but he’s the best imaginary friend a gal could have. Â He can change his shape so sometimes he’s large enough to ride and sometimes small enough to fit in your pocket, but he’s always there when you need him.
#5
This little creature is a party animal. She stays up late at night and clomps around the house in her giants boots. She just wants someone to join the party with her and will do whatever she can to keep you from falling asleep!
#4
I never know what to name my little creatures…. This one likes to get together with all his buddies and hold roller derby competitions inside the bathtub.
#3
I don’t know if this guy has a name, but I do know that he has a tendency to eat things that he finds hidden in corners and under the bed.
#2 Zipper Tooth
Zipper Tooth is a little creature that loves to hang out inside sewing boxes and drawers. It lives off thread, needles, pins, Â and especially loves to munch on freshly wound bobbins.
#1 Moon Washer
It’s still day 1 on the west coast! I’m mainly using this challenge to keep track of all the little monster characters that come to mind every day. I’m planning to pull out the good ones to include as part of a larger project. Â When I was a kid I always used to picture little window-washer-creatures working away up on the moon keeping it polished and bright, so my first character does just that. Â He and his pals are fastidious little monsters.
2011 Challenger: Sarah Clark
My name is Sarah and I’m a professional illustrator and animator working in the Bay Area. I have a lot of artistic interests ranging from digital and traditional illustration, mask making, costume design, and sculpture, but the thread that holds as these interests together is my desire to create compelling and exciting stories and characters. I’m really excited about the 30 Characters Challenge because I’m looking for a good kick in the pants to jump start my personal practice, and I’m looking for an opportunity to start pumping out ideas for a children’s book that I’m developing. I’m also excited about getting to work in conjunction with a community of other passionate artists, and I’m interested in putting more of my work out online for the world to see.
