Nathan Seabolt-My 2011 Characters Overview
Here are the characters I created for the 30 Characters in 30 Days Challenge 2011.
Click the images to view the posts.
They’re definitely not all gems, but it was tons of fun to do this challenge. I’ll be back next year!
#31 BONUS! – Z
BONUS CHARACTER!
Z is a mysterious young woman who uses agility, a tenacious attitude and some massive firepower to combat the forces of darkness. Sort of like Kolchak the Night Stalker or Supernatural, if those shows featured a borderline insane girl who seems to have escaped from a manga into the quasi-real world.
Coming in a comic series in 2012!
#30-Charles Ivy, The Void Bearer
Captured by a cult and intended for human sacrifice, Charles and his friend Lawrence were inadvertently saved when the ritual was interrupted by a girl and her young babysitting charge stumbling into the proceedings. Unfortunately, the ritual had begun, and Charles was already wounded and dying.
During the magical backlash that occurred from the ritual being interrupted, Charles was possessed by a spirit of the Void, the negative balance to all other elements. While this saved his life, it is unclear how much of his own mind remains, uncontrolled by the spirit. He and the other 3 children caught in the ritual now have to deal with using their abilities to help others and survive the continued attentions of the cult.
#29-Lawrence Kirkfield, The Water Bearer
Captured by a cult and intended for sacrifice in a mad plan to harness the power of elemental spirits, Lawrence and his friend Charles were accidentally rescued when a young girl babysitting a boy interrupted the ritual. In the magical maelstrom that resulted, Lawrence was bonded with an elemental spirit of water, and became a vaguely humanoid pillar of liquid, able to control all aspects of the element. This has somehow not enhanced his ability to talk to girls.
#28-Andrea Lopez, The Flame Bearer
Andrea was a typical 15 year old girl, trying to grow up in the city, deal with parents that were away working most of the time, and care for a precocious child she babysits regularly. One evening while hurrying home, she and the boy accidentally stumble upon a magic ritual, with a mad cult intending to harness the powers of elemental spirits and use them to take over the world. Unfortunately for the cult, young Arthur has impulse problems and interrupts the proceedings, resulting in the unleashing of unimaginable forces and the accidental empowerment of Andrea, Arthur and two other children intended for sacrifices by the cult.
Now Andrea is the Flame Bearer, able to manifest as a being of fire and plasma and control the elemental forces of thermal energy. Powers she finds most handy in keeping Arthur in line.
#27-Arthur MacManis, the Earth Bearer
While being escorted by his babysitter, young Arthur was caught in a failed magical ritual designed to bind the power of elemental spirits to flesh and blood. While still a simple 5-year old in mind and soul, his body has become transformed into a nearly indestructible form of stone and magma, and he has absolute control of the earth beneath our feet. Luckily for us, his babysitter was also empowered by the magical backlash, or else our supply of cookies and Spongebob Squarepants merchandise would be completely devastated.
#26-Eric the Bear (and Pinky)
Eric is a bear, Pinky is a professor of Economics at the local University. Watch as hilarity ensues!
#25-Winchell Warthog
A low-level managerial accountant demon, Winchell is easily frightened. In the above instance, he has been shown the new revisions to tax code governing deductible rates for second incomes earned without the previous filing of a schedule 44: actuarial benefits for hamster owners as pertaining to kibble deduction for business purposes. As we all know, this is completely straightforward and nothing to become upset about.
#23-Silverback
Evolutionary biologist Professor Martin Stahls was a meek man, quietly focused on lab results and the slow and inexorable progress of scientific discovery. But his quiet demeanor masked an inner life, where he was consumed by contempt and anger at the restrictions placed upon him by society and the depression of the knowledge of his own insignificance. Â When he is caught in a lab accident in the Nuclear Physics department and transformed into a giant atomic-powered gorilla, he decides it’s time that he stopped being afraid…and that everyone else should start.
#22-Jim: Space Technician, 3rd Class
When superscience runs amok, when that vial of airborne Moon Bloat virus goes missing in the ventilation system of the space station, when the higher-ups lose their Black Level clearance security door passcode-they call on Jim.
Here we see our intrepid, sleep-deprived and overcaffinated hero tasked with removing the gigantic batteries from a “pacification drone”.
#21-Dash Boldman, DDS.
A character for a webcomic that I’ve got planned. He’s from an alternate retro-future..where they DO have jetpacks. He’s also a defender of the meek, fighter of injustice and patron of good dental hygiene. Using Superscience to combat the Supernatural! (don’t forget to floss)
#20-Bitebots
Occasionally using inept disguises, but generally relying purely on sheer weight of numbers-the Bitebots can drag down even the largest of prey. Many have chuckled at their cuteness only to find their shoes suddenly ruined by dozens of tiny punctures.
Beware!
#19-Jelleton
The unholy union of a de-fleshed human and a sweet fruity pulp commonly put on toast.
Bask in the sticky madness!
#18-Beel, Zee and Bub
Condemned to the prison of our mundane reality, these imp siblings do their best to stir up havoc whenever they can-tempting mortals, destroying public property and pushing all the elevator buttons. If you’ve had an unbelivable run of misery, it’s likely that you have gained the attention of one or more of these little hellions. (Good luck with that.)
#17-Mertyle
Glimpsed only fleetingly by deep submersible craft or perhaps via the magic of alcohol, this shy aquatic creature spends her days frolicking, eating animated dancing crabs, and faking Loch Ness Monster sightings.
#14-The Not Quite Yeti
Inspired by comic book art, Looney Tunes, and horribly fragrant puns.
But hey, he’s got a little hat!
#13-Ned the Head
If you like your disembodied oracle heads preserved by the power of voodoo of a foul-mouthed and smarmy nature, have I got a deal for you!
This one’s a semi tribute to the spirit of a great comic, The Goon by Eric Powell. Â My art’s not nearly as good, but my heart’s in the right place.
#12-Doctor Pirate
When physics researcher Walter McGovern ignored protocol, legality and common sense in his pursuit of travel to alternate dimensions, the scientific community was shocked. When the inevitable explosion took his left hand, his right eye and most of his sanity they were unsurprised. But when his obsession with naval history and Disney theme park rides drove him completely into the loving arms of mad science, they learned to fear the Swashbuckling Supervillain…Doctor Pirate!
Aided with cobbled together superscience, the Doctor raids, pillages and keel-hauls all who stand in the way of his conquest. He is a known affiliate of the evil conglomerate known as the Horrible Hexaverate, but not even they can control-or even trust-the cutthroat Pirate.
#11-Moustache Magnifico
The masked avenger of wrongs! The pinnacle of hirsute manliness! Fighting crime from the top rope!
He also works as a tour bus driver, but never ever removes the mask.
#10-Nitro Jackson!
Watch out, Jive Turkeys!
I’m hoping to do some mini-comics and maybe a full story with this guy and his anthropomorphic struggles against the Man. (or, you know..talking rabbit and the like)
#9-Sleepy Sam
Another pastiche of grotesque and adorable. (Insert joke about relatability here.)
Sam is always dead tired for some reason, and it was my puns that killed him in the first place.
#8-Slim, the Sideshow Song-and-Dance Man
Bastard son of a thousand Vaudevillians! Is he a ghostly apparition of the distant past, a harbinger of doom? A grotesque supernatural commentary on entertainment?
And seriously, what’s up with those choppers?
#7- Otto
Today, it’s renowned space explorer and wooer of mysterious alien women, Otto! Â He’s noble, brave and has the high score on all the pinball machines at the space station.
#6-Bud the Angry Daisy
Was it the herbicides that caused it? Did irresponsible use of chemistry lead to an evolutionary change in a lone flower, mutating it into an entirely new species, heretofore never seen in the history of life on the Earth? Was it a government plot to create the ultimate spy, one who could unobtrusively sprout up in hostile lands and learn secrets unnoticed? Were aliens involved? Or the Devil? Or was it just centuries, millennia of mistreatment of his floral kin that created this monstrosity? We may never know…
But I’d definitely not try to pick this daisy.
#5-Sgt. Furry
“I was in the Big One, you know…that’s where I got this wooden ear. There was this time we was pinned down by the Ratzis in the desert, and fellers was dyin’ all around, cryin’ about the sand in their eyes. Our ammo was gone, and it looked like curtains-but then I heard a tiny skittering sound. Through my one good remaining ear, I made out a high-pitched squeaky scream punctuated by gunfire. Just before I blacked out from the amazement and gratitude, I witnessed an explosion of miniature fury, guns all ablazin’. He tore into the enemy position like a small fuzzy comet, and saved our bacon.”
“War is little furry hell.”
#4-Halibut Harold
Harold was never popular around the office. Maybe it was his individuality, or the way he meticulously performed even the most mundane tasks. Whatever the reason, he did find it to his advantage when it came down to the last muffin.
#2-Lil’ Dr. F
And on the third day, we finished out the little big-head trio! It’s Lil’ Dr. F, the..um, brains of the operation. He seems a little odd, and you have to be careful not to leave him alone with your pets, but on the whole he’s a completely normal, well-adjusted psychopath with delusions of grandeur.
LIKES: Â inventing medications, testing hypotheses, defying nature and all that is holy…for science!
DISLIKES: authority, lemonade, whistleblowers
Day #2- Lil’ Frank
Another day, another little dead guy with a big head. Frank is the quiet one of the group, being..well, mostly dead. And now that I think of it, he’s made from lots of people, so he sort of is a group all to himself-of which he would still be the quiet one.
LIKES: peanut butter, quiet time, Ren and Stimpy cartoons with the volume turned way down
DISLIKES: angry villagers, torches, pitchforks, the default iPod headphones
#30Characters Chatter…
