Author Archive: Alan Stacy
Illustrator, costume designer and makeup effects artist for films, print and television, a cartoonist, computer graphic artist, animator, storyboard artist, storyteller, teacher. Most of my influences come from having traveled the world at a young age, my love of nature, Looney Tunes cartoons, my study of art history and history in general. I have been drawing and painting as far back as I can remember and consider myself fortunate to have had so many wonderful opportunities to explore in the arts in my lifetime. As a picture book writer and illustrator and fantasy writer this challenge is a great motivator to jump start my imagination.
day 25 – Jabbernowl
The Jabbernowl. as I see it, a cross between an owl and a donkey. Another term used in W.C. Field’s movie “The Bank Dick” (1940) and refers to a person who is a “blockhead”. The term seems to have been traced to Francois Rabelais’ “Gargantuan and Pantagruel” from 1532 and refers to a person with a large and misshapen head. The concertina? Well, he likes a funky polka beat. (dead computer = unfinished and uncolored – with this one I bow out say I am done after a long couple of days trying to get my computer fixed – the rest are all really rough sketches)
day 24 – Ukluk Hahn
A Polar Bear shaman, Guardian of the Spirits whose souls are trapped between life and death in the realm of the Northern Lights. (dead computer = unfinished and uncolored)
day 23 – Fighter X
Fighter X of the Dyna League All Stars RoboTerra Games of 2057, 147 feet tall (dead computer = no coloring, unfinished character)
Day 22 – Elder Agamorph
An Elder Librarian of the Agomorphs, a race of beings made of liquid rock and crystal. He is the keeper of his tribes role of ancestors, the Tomes of Aaz-Ur of the linage of Tyrek. (my computer with Photoshop died yesterday so I’m just scanning these last few characters in uncolored)
Day 21 – King Slugwort
King Slugwort of the Elanthi. on his throne of roots and twigs in his mud-encrusted underground palace.
Day 19 – Gar Gnash, War Badger
Gar Gnash, a warrior of the Truffle clan, does his best to uphold the honor of his tribe. Inspired somewhat by Gimli the dwarf from the Lord of the Rings.
Day 18 – Panda Warbot
On a far-flung planetoid in the distant future, a warrior panda is fused with a robotic entity to go kick some ***.
Day 14 – Rooster Cogsworth
Marshall Rooster Cogsworth aka RoboRooster, the only law on planet C.R.U.D. in the Omega Meta Gamma cluster. Injured in the Great War, as a soldier of fortune he turned to a law abiding gunslinger after his robotic makeover made him see red anytime injustice reared its’ foxy head. C.R.U.D. is a dry and desolate planet full of mutant outlaws, thieves and villains as they and honest citizens vie to claim and mine the elusive, mysterious and possibly living crystalline C.R.U.D., the only substance in the known galaxy that can convert common rocks into gold. Cogsworth and his misfit army are the only stopgap of chaos and lawlessness on C.R.U.D.
Day 13 – Atranak, Fox Shaman
A fox shaman from the Dritinari tribe, in the southwestern part of what was once North America in the far distant future.
Day 11 – Rainbow Lizard
The Rainbow Lizard is about 3 feet tall. It has a mesmerizing gaze and iridescent skin that shifts hypnotically through the color spectrum, putting its’ victims into a stupor. It then expels a hallucinogenic/neuroparalyzing toxic compound through its’ tongue and skin that renders the victim inert, allowing the Rainbow Lizard to slowly digest the hapless meal in its’ expandable paunch. There is no known antidote for its’ poisons.
Day 10 – The Mooncalf
Mooncalf:Â an idle daydreamer, fool or dolt from around 1555 England. I latched onto the expression from the W.C. Field movie “The Bank Dick” (1940) and decided to explore the word in this form. “Cows in Space” coming soon!!!
Day 9 – Monsterology – The Unt
The Unt is a massively brutish and hairy piece of work, with eyes on the ends of long stalks for looking around corners and under closed doors in order to surprise its’ victims.
Day 8 – The Verbumate
The Verbumate is a jerk. He loves to tease with impossible riddles and has bad taste in jokes and jesting.
Day 7 – Monsterology: The Gnarz
The Gnarz is a monster that will devour just about anything but takes particular delight in shredding curtains, lace and upholstery made of fine fabrics.
Day 6 – Greater Horned Xexel
Sentient aquatic species on unnamed planet in the Sirius star system. Approximately 2 meters long. Hunts and communicates through sonic pulses. Documented briefly during the unmanned Werner’s Expedition of 2115 as several of the creatures attempted to interact and communicate with the probe. Not to be confused with the smaller, less colorful subspecies with which the Greater Xexel seems to have a symbiotic relationship.
Day 5 – Samurai Tiger
I sketched this guy out while sitting in the doctor’s waiting room today = plenty of time to kill. I think I love drawing anthropomorphs more than anything else. I know things like this have been done before but one of those ideas I had to explore as I love Japanese armor and culture, the bushido way.
Day 4 – The Texas Twister
One thing I do not miss about Texas – having recently moved back to New Mexico where I grew up – is the annual threat of tornadoes. The tornado is like a villain from an Old West saga:Â you know it’s coming, it’s going to be devastating and your best bet is to hide no matter how brave and invulnerable you think you are. I’ve had plenty of close calls with real tornadoes (one almost took the roof off of my house) and this past year has been another test from a tornado of health problems for me. So, I think of this exercise as something of an exorcism:Â “just keep on moving and leave me alone, you’ve done enough damage already.” Sometimes all you can do is pick up the broken pieces, rebuild and move on.
Day 3 – Two Eyed Cyclops
This idea woke me up in the middle of the night. At first I was just thinking, “Cyclops” in the traditional sense but then the title popped into sharp focus. The extra head idea was too fun to pass up as was the necklace of skulls. I almost did a Jack the Giant Slayer figure with a cow running away but liked the idea of a knight about to get squashed because his faithful steed bolted and ran.
Day 2 – Baron Cavanaugh
Baron Cavanaugh de Montague e Leon – 1797 – who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. I love reproducing period costumes and this model came from an intact uniform worn by one of Napoleon’s generals dating from around 1800. This character was inspired by a costume that I made last year but never got to finish due to illness. Thought I would realize the concept here..
