They call her The Smiling Hourglass.
Only… “she” is not a real person.
“She” is actually two entities who live as Schrödinger’s cats.
If either one’s presence fails to be acknowledged by mortals, they’d turn into a wraith-like shadow that stalks the other entity.
It is the other one that turns into who they call “The Smiling Hourglass”.
They call her that because of how she seems to appear to people who have died near her. A smiling mask, an hourglass in hand.
She serves as a psychopomp to the story, taking the dead and bringing them to the afterlife. To mortals, she looks like a woman with a silly mask on. To the deities… well, let’s say it’s just not pretty.
Though not technically there, the shadow hinders the woman from her work, asking to eat the souls. Often, the Smiling Hourglass would kill a couple of animals to calm it down. If the demands become too much to handle, they would switch their roles.
Both the shadow and the woman should not be seen together, lest the world insists upon the day of the apocalypse…

Knife-edge balance… such tension.
Thank you!
It has a Lovecraftian vibe to it… love it!
