Ekela- prodigy of light

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Ever since her days as a child, Ekela possessed a radiant beauty and a strong affinity with the light. The child would always find peace in wandering around old temple ruins, and was also naturally drawn to scriptures dictating healing mantras.

After suffering the loss of her parents after a demon attack,  Ekela was taken in by the order of the Blue lotus, a group of powerful nuns, who live in solitude to practice the ways of  the light and healing.

With her strong affinity with the light,  Ekela was a natural when it came to learning the ways of healing. Her talent soon rivaled even the elders, and she was later recognized as a prodigy in the healing arts.

Despite being known for their powerful magic, the Blue lotus seldom intervene in the affairs of people.

Ekela knew that she could never stand idle while there was conflict and bloodshed abound, so she left the blue lotus in search for ways to help people with her gift.

Songs praising the deeds of the beautiful healer were later sung, and the word of Ekela spread across the lands.

The blue lotus, branding Ekela as a traitor, hunted her down and punished her for her treasons. The malicious act was carried by her sisters who were once her closest companions, while others, were fellow peers who were jealous of her gift.

The cruel punishment left Ekela blind and her beautiful face marred.

It is a mystery, as to why Ekela chose to let her wounds remain, for she could easily restore her eyesight, and heal her broken visage with ease.

Till this day, Ekela travels the land, healing the victims of war, famine, and disease. Her magic has also become even more powerful, despite the loss of her eyes. Perhaps in the darkness, she found a way to embrace the light even more, for when she is blind, she cannot hate, and judge, and she heals everyone never questioning their deeds nor their past.

“Nerfertem, lend me your strength to cleanse these wounds.”- Ekela

01 – 3-MAN

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

For this year’s challenge, I decided to try something different from my massive day-by-day story of characters that I put together last year.  Inspired by the incomparable AXE COP, I decided to turn the creative reins over to my 3 year old son.  I wrote out the alphabet and had him create a character for each letter.  He told me about the new superhero and guided me on their designs.  It should be noted that all word balloon dialogue was also created by my three year old.  So here we go, in no particular order…

3-MAN

3-MAN would has three of everything; 3 arms, 3 legs and 3 heads.  Their names are Proot, Croot and Groggy.  I love that they all have distinct personalities and priorities.

#12 Garret, Brother of the Silent Sword.

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

The great city of Saal is on the borders of many realms and kingdoms and as such is home to a diverse range of people, whether they call Saal home or are just passing through. Garret is neither; he is one of the few who are assigned to Saal.

As part of the guild of the Silent Sword, Garret is an assassin of the highest order. Trained from birth in the ways of the blade and the dark magics of the shadow the brothers and sisters of the silent sword are the most feared and sort after assassins in the world. Once fully trained and inducted into the guild fully, with the forging and naming of their Silent Sword, they are assigned to a city or province. They will live and die here, assassinating only those they are hired to, a silent sword never being drawn unless is has been paid to be drawn.

Garret has been in Saal for nine years and has taken countless lives over that time. His sword, Tace tasting the blood of noblewoman, brutish men, messengers and priests alike.

The message appeared in the same way as all the others, a vision of the target shown in a mirror. Their name appearing like smoke around them. The man standing before Garret today was the strong and powerful figure of King Dontas Godart. Before the king had even reached Saal a bounty had fallen on his head, and it had fallen to Garret to answer the call. He knew of the king of Elmore, he had heard the stories of the great and noble ruler of the realm, and the woe that had befallen him. Garret knew that Dontas being in Saal meant a changing of the times, he Dontas would be the man to slay him, yet he fastened Tace to around his waist and went to find the king who would be his killer.

Day Eight: Rum-Ram Bloodstold

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Tired old man, tired old Bloodstold, in his throne of imitation leather and sipping a glass of tonic and lemon because he’s all out of gin. His runes are all cast, his deceitfully youthful body ached more and more as the nights when he can get a rise out of his magiks became increasingly few and depressingly mundane.  Rum-Ram Bloodstold, the last of his kind in this world to not have given up and departed for the old soul’s dimension, took another sip of his tart drink and fondled thoughts of when the tarts he had at night weren’t just the liquid or pastry variety.
One more sip, Rum-Ram decided, one more sip and then a slip — into sober sleep.

Day 10: Extensia

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Brenda Jenkins was a shy bookish girl with low self esteem. Tired of the cruel taunts showered upon her by her co-workers, she visits the shop of Madame Felucca, a practitioner of Obeah, a type of sorcery practiced in the west indies. At her wit’s end Brenda begs Madame F to give her strength and confidence and proclaims that she would pay any price to achieve these goals including her very soul. In an effort to oblige her client, Felucca performs a ritual involving the dreads of an Obeah woman that was known for her powerful spells. During the ritual the woman’s dreads and Brenda’s hair merge and become one.

The effect on Brenda was immediate. She went to work the next day,  told everyone off and quit her job. Days later she began to notice physical changes as well. Not only was her strength increasing tenfold, but she discovered that she could move her hair which was now very long just by thinking about it. Eventually she could not only move it but also increase the mass making it a deadly weapon. She was soon discovered by CHAMPS (see day 2) and added to their roster of heros for hire.

#12 Sal, the Fire Sprite

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Sal is a fiery little spirit, obsessed with pranks, ice cream (which he can’t eat because it vaporizes) and swing music. He can often be found hiding in your shoe or leaving smoldering little footprint tracks all over the kitchen ceiling.

#12 Lauren Brule

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

When the imperial army was knocking down the gates of the secluded valley, it was clear that the peaceful inhabitants of the valley would not be able to defeat the invaders. The queen issued the order to escape to the confines of the tombs of the holy mountain (basically, in their belief system, if they aren’t buried under the holy mountain their spirit is doomed to never find rest). The queen would remain to mislead the army into thinking that the people had simply fled and destroy all evidence that they used the holy mountain to keep it safe from those that would disturb their eternal slumber. Lauren, the queen’s handmaiden decided to make the ultimate sacrifice and take the queen’s place, so the queen herself could go and be at rest in the holy mountain. Lauren does what she must to destroy the holy records and is captured when the army reaches the palace. The army is happy enough to loot the laden palace and leave with the captured “queen” who is to become part of the prince’s ever growing harem, thus assuring rest for the souls of Lauren’s people.

#11 – Phone Tree Woman

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

[co-created with Ken Barnes] Endlessly riding in the Transit System is a woman attempting to navigate her way through an increasingly complex automated phone program.  It started off small, simple, and frustrating, but with each call she makes it one step farther.  It consumes her attention now to the point where she ignores nearly all stops, and most people as well, except when the phone is charging.  The tree itself gets eerie complex as well — its instructions generally come in the form of telling one to press one or two, but have now extended to real-world instructions.  (To speak to an operator, put the phone down and pick up a gun.  Walk twelve paces into the square, shoot the first person you see on the right, elude pursuit, then dial this number again and press 2.)

She has some kind of telecommuting job which enables her to do this, however she is growing increasingly forgetful of it as her duel with the telephone tree consumes her.  She never gets ahold of a person on the phone.  (Like, ever.)

She believes that if the telephone dilemma is not resolved, then the Collectors will come for her.

#12 – Pango (Derek Kidd)

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Derek Kidd was a unremarkable career criminal, convicted once for attempted murder when he was just 15, imprisoned again when he was 20 for possession of a illegal firearm and sale of crack cocaine. However, it was while serving time for the second conviction that his abilities manifested, and he became a genuine threat to law enforcement and heroes alike.

Pango’s abilities manifested as changing him into a gigantic, partially human-Pangolin hybrid, coating his body with incredibly hard, plate-like scales, a long, prehensile tail and tongue, both of which he can use as weapons, and long, deadly claws that he uses to borrow and dig. Pango can also secrete a noxious acidic substance that can all-but incapacitate anyone nearby with nausea and sears the nose and eyes.

Since manifesting his abilities, Pango has managed to evade capture for several years, due to a combination of his own intelligence and his new-found abilities. Pango is permanently stuck in his hybrid form, a fact that suits him just fine. He has, in many ways, happily left the entirety of his humanity behind, and is now focused on a career where his special abilities can be put to use. His incredibly strong claws and digging ability has been used to rob several banks, and he has spilled no small amount of blood with them.

From head to toe, Pango stands seven and a half feet tall, with is tail, he measures as nearly twelve feet long. An excellent climber, Pango is also capable of moving with surprising speed and agility, making him a handful for any person or superhero unfortunate enough to come across him.

To this day, Pango holds a major grudge against the Police and any authority figures, and delights in causing havoc or harming members of those services. He allegedly once dug out a sinkhole underneath a police station, causing a major building collapse, but nothing has been proven yet.

#11 – Kid Mystic

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Benjamin Bowman discovered he had superpowers at the age of 12, and his entire life since has revolved around that. Benjamin suddenly went from a unknown face in the crowd, to one of the faces at the vanguard of a new generation of heroes.

Blessed with an immense capability for magic and magical affinity, Benjamin is discovering the potential of his powers, including some reality-warping abilities that he has only just begun to scratch the surface of.

The son of a single mother, when Benjamin discovered his abilities, he immediately threw himself into learning and honing them. Benjamin understood, even at a young age that the moment his abilities manifested that his life was never going to be the same, and that his abilities potentially represented a ticket for him and his family out of a dangerous neighborhood and into a safer, more stable life. Benjamin deeply wanted to provide for his mother, who had raised two children by herself, and understood the power of a superhero to be a symbol and a protector, and believed that he could affect actual, serious change.

While not loud or brash, since discovering his abilities Benjamin has carried himself with a quiet confidence. Compassionate and kind, Benjamin is still a 17-year-old who has been living with his increasing fame for five years now, and, all things considered, doing a reasonably fair job of staying something close to grounded. He is not above being petty or cruel (he is still a teenager), and has used, and in some cases abused his newfound status and influence to gain favors and gifts (he hasn’t paid for a pair of shoes in three years, and Benjamin is a real Sneakerhead). Benjamin is also quite fond of the opposite sex, and hasn’t wanted for female attention in years. His views of women and their place in society can be… slightly more regressive than what some might want from a paragon of the community.

Benjamin is on a lot of radars. Many hero groups from around the nation have been in contact with him and his family, offering him the chance, when he turns eighteen, to become a full-fledged professional, to get the best training with the best heroes who can prepare him for the rigors of the job from a personal and from a professional standpoint. He hasn’t made any decisions yet though.
Benjamin cuts an exceedingly un-threatening figure normally, standing just under six feet tall, with a frame that can kindly be referred to as “rangy”. His most distinguishing feature, however, is the large scar running along his left arm, from near his elbow down to his hand, the result of an accident where he was scalded with boiling water as a child. He doesn’t make any attempt to hide the scar, considering it a reminder of where he came from, as his future opens to him.

Day 12 | Witchbomb

| November 12, 2012 | 2 Comments

2012 – DAY 12

All characters are created by my 5 year-old son, The Junior Partner.  He has either drawn these characters on his own and I have recreated them here, or he has sat at my elbow dictating design and conceptual ideas like a creative, but frenetic, taskmaster.

WITCHBOMB

Witchbomb started as a very basic idea, a witch-man who threw smoke bombs at people.  Based on the lean concept of a hood and goggles (so he could see in the smoke), I threw together a loose sketch which was then quickly vetoed…the smoke and magic blasts also came out of fingers and he had a hook hand.  I assumed that meant three arms… I was wrong, but The Junior Partner liked the idea.  My input was this, what if he was half robot, but not metal, but wood carved from magic trees.  His extra arms could be carved enchanted wood with various holes and nozzles to release compounds and smoke mixtures he mixed together and stored in his wooden limbs.  This was met with skepticism until i drew up the basic character idea, and then after a few tweaks…Witchbomb!

Witchbomb is more meddler and nuisance than hero or villain…kind of like The Creeper.  He’ll join up with a hero for a while or maybe a team but then could switch it up whenever he felt like it just to cause trouble and confusion…much like his magical smoke controlling abilities.

#11 – Commander Xeizot

| November 12, 2012 | 0 Comments

Commander Xeizot is in charge of an armada of spaceships within our galaxy.  He was once a strong leader but he has gotten fat and lazy over the years.  He follows orders from high command when it’s convenient to do so, but his loyalty can be bough by the highest bidder.  His men respect his leadership because of the man he used to be, but those closest to him question his motives.
