#3 – Darius Mandrake

| November 4, 2012 | 0 Comments

Darius Mandrake was supposed to be it. The man, the next big thing. When Darius discovered his abilities at age 12, he immediately became “the next big thing” to come along in the superhero community. Prodigiously gifted, standing 6’2“ in 9th grade, with super-strength, near-invulnerability, and the ability to manipulate time, his potential was said to be nearly limitless. He was to be a era-defining superhero, if he lived up to his abilities.

“If” has come to define Darius’ life. If he actually worked at making the most of his gifts. If only he had better friends. If only he had surrounded himself with better people. If he’d had someone to guide him, to teach him about the wages of fame. So much was expected of him, so much was given to him immediately because of that potential ability.

Darius was being “recruited” by the biggest superhero groups across the globe, told he was the second coming. It all came far too much, too soon, too fast for Darius. By 14 he was a handful, by 17 he was beyond anyone’s control. He came to believe the hype about himself. He ceased working to perfect and understand his abilities, taking them for granted. He partied, openly feuded with other heroes, had repeated skirmishes with the police and generally acted above the law, above society, as if he was something wholly different to everyone else.

Darius is 25 now, a living “cautionary tale”, the object of derision. He has squandered several chances to make a life for himself, getting thrown out of no less than three superhero collectives already in his short life. He still prioritizes his vices over actually doing anything material, and finds himself with even less understanding and control of his abilities than he did when he was a teenager.

For all of this, however, Darius blames everyone else. He blames “the system” for treating him unfairly, when he says he was living in a way that all other heroes were. He blames other heroes for spreading rumors and lies about him, for publicly shunning him from their community. He still believes he is earth’s greatest hero whenever he wants to, he simply justifies his apathy by believing that there is little out there that poses enough of a challenge for him to genuinely engage with it.

Darius has surrounded himself with a small entourage that act more as enablers and Yes Men than friends or helpers. He still has his loyal fans, and is still capable of commanding a certain amount of celebrity, but few doubt that his life is already on the downside. Darius is bitter, petulant, cruel, and unwilling to take responsibility for anything he’s done. He still believes his redemption is just around the corner, even as it slips away with each passing day.

Darius still looks the part of the hero, now standing 6‘7“, with the physique of an olympian. The only thing he has committed himself to is his look and his style. He still demands to wear only the finest, cutting-edge fashion. Darius’s face, once warm and inviting as a child, has darkened, but he still retains a certain leading-man look, with his square chin and inviting eyes.

#3 Electrode

Day 3. Not as fond of this one but today was exhausting. Electrode is a futuristic cyborg type person. She is born into an era of implants. Some of which are for enjoyment and some for prolonging life etc. The wires that run to the one side of the head complete a connection from brain to spine where packs of information have been placed. Sort of like an outer drive. For some people these are used to distribute medications which can be refilled externally into the packs and for some these hold information such as playlists of music….(new meaning to can’t get that song out of your head. )

Day 4 | Burning Arrow

| November 4, 2012 | 0 Comments

2012 – DAY 04

All characters are created by my 5 year-old son, The Junior Partner.  He has either drawn these characters on his own and I have recreated them here, or he has sat at my elbow dictating design and conceptual ideas like a creative, but frenetic, taskmaster.

BURNING ARROW

The Junior Partner is obsessed with bows and arrows.  he saved up pocket change for seven months to buy a cheap plastic bow and and suction cup arrow set with his own money.  he loves Hawkeye and Green Arrow.  We were sitting around one evening getting ready for bedtime and drawing on his bedroom floor.  He started describing a robot with a boy and arrow that was part of him and that he made the arrows out of spikes and trash he found all around.  He could make these arrows combust or shoot lasers…how that would work, I don’t know.

So Burning Arrow is sort of a time warped Native American stereotype sent into an alternative/not-too-distant future where he becomes a cyborg who escapes and has to survive using his hunting and archery skills.

#4 Kingfish

He’s the ruler of the Deep! Honestly, this one was what I thought was a nifty name that I developed a character for. My first instinct for this was (of course) a gangster fish, followed immediately by a huge hulking death machine of a shark. These both seemed a little too on the nose, so I picked the least likely (yet still literal, I know, I know…) sea creature I could imagine with the moniker. And the crown and scepter. He may look innocuous, even in his regalia, but I’d think twice about crossing him. He might know Aquaman or something.

Day 2 – Noelle

| November 4, 2012 | 0 Comments

Noelle is one of Ryan Elizabeth’s best friends.  She is kind of a babe, maybe.

Aside from havin a smokin’ bod and hella on point sense of style, Noelle is a pretty average girl who is struggling to make sense of the world.  Noelle has always had a pretty tumultuous family life.  Her mother is very immature, short-tempered, and insecure while her step-dad is maybe literally the worst scum to walk the underworld.   Despite this, Noelle has had an amazing support net of friends who’ve helped her overcome and distance herself both mentally and physically from her toxic family life.  Noelle has big dreams of being successful in advertisement and journalism but hasn’t taken any steps toward learning due to feeling chained down by her family.  She has a younger sister who she is fiercely protective of, and who is still trapped at home being abused and corrupted.  Noelle feels powerless and fears confronting her parents, and hates herself for not having the courage to rescue her sister from the bad environment.  To disguise her internal conflict Noelle puts on a tough “don’t give a fuck” attitude and hides behind her good looks in order to distract herself and others from real life issues.

Jason is another so-called “marine”.  Except that he doesn’t use any weapons.  This means that he will have to find ways to outsmart his enemies.
