Day 2: Count …
He was called in to handle a cowboy problem in the supernatural old west community of Gravesteak, USA. We don’t actually know his name because people have a habit of interrupting him as he introduces himself. Besides, he’s the only Vampire Cowboy in the area. He finds it a bit insulting though. He’s a bit sensitive and tightly wound. Still, he’s the deputy now, and the night shift.
#3 Spitfire
A punch from Spitfire is very literally an explosion. Her skin is tough as steel and her tactics are unmatched in the field. She is part of a team of heroes that can’t decide on a team name (She calls them Forceworks and is unaware that is taken), and is one of the core members of the team and field leader.
Day 3 Non Profit
Non Profit is a modern day Robin Hood. Working from the inside of major American corporations, he slowly drains money from their billionaire owners and spreads it among those who truly need it. Non Profit is determined to ensure that someday there will be a true middle class again. He is the scourge of corporate fat cats everywhere.
Character #3: Injun Bubba
I updated my Twitter avatar last night to reflect the Thanksgiving holiday period, so I figured I could get away with sporting the image for Character #3. Enjoy!

Lipstick
Alias: Lipstick
Name: Sofia Rovenskaya
Powers: Emotion manipulation through pheromone powers; Expert Spy; Expert Hand-to-hand combat
Background: Sofia is a famed Russian ex-KGB agent. She was the product of a genetic manipulation program where orphans were adopted by the state and trained to be espionage agents and received gene therapy to increase their natural abilities. Sofia was the first to develop metahuman powers from this program, acquiring control of the emotions of others through the emission of pheromones. For many years she acted as a field agent and assassin, developing a signature technique of seducing her targets both male and female with her pheromones, and then poisoning them with specially-laced lipstick. She escaped her handlers and broke ties with the KGB, and started acting as a rogue agent out for hire.
#3 American Splendor
This is American Splendor, he isn’t a hero, he isn’t a villain, he isn’t part of your system. American Splendor was a lab experiment during the 1950’s the high day of American ideals, the citizens believed in the country and so did he. The government could do no wrong in the eyes of the people and this is how much of the country viewed society at the time. He was given a secret growth hormone that made him the size of an average adult male, the thing was the genetically enhanced hormone the scientist created also had a side effect … human intelligence American Splendor, considered a failure in the eyes of his scientist creators was put into cryogenic sleep until a time that science was to a point that they could reverse the effects.
Like many businesses in the country the lab fell on hard times during the financial crisis and was shut down, funding removed and power cut off. Forgotten and alone, American Splendor awoke from his sleep to find a country he did not recognize. The ideals of the 1950s were gone, everyone was cynical, corrupt, and only worried about the newest Jersey Shore episode to be concerned or aware of the downward spiral the country and the world has taken.
He doesn’t know how or if he will even succeed but his determination to get the people to wake up from their entertainment induced coma has lead him to a life of rebellion. He fights for the basic human rights, the constitutional rights, and moral rights of the people. In the shadows he works alone, on the edge of the law, protecting the people anyway he can.
#2 The Dalang
For all this is rough, I like it better than the previous one – this dude is shadow, can make shadows, and can make tiny shadow versions of himself.
#1 LOOMA
Very rough thing to kick start as I’m playing catch up – this was a kind of Grant Morrison-Doom Patrol-esque inspired character who became a little bit more fantasy in the drawing…
#3 Professor Sampson
Although he has lost the strength-endowing locks of his youth, the Professor has found that with age (and beard) comes vast wisdom. And with vast wisdom comes almost perpetual surprise at the foibles of humanity.
2012 Challenger: Garry McLaughlin
Hi folks, so I’m a bit late getting started on the 30 Characters Challenge, but I thought I’d play catch up, write an intro post, then post up my first two characters. Really excited to get started on this – had planned to do it next year, but ended up getting distracted by other things. Not so this year!
I’m a semi pro comic writer and artist from Glasgow, Scotland, and you can see some of my work here: garrymac.daportfolio.com.
Bear with my first few posts – they’re very rough
Day 3: Clanky
It wasn’t touched on in the first issue but Bee Boy is a bit of a lab rat. He’s always tinkering with his inventions. This one is named Clanky. He was created by BB to assist him with his experiments, do heavy lifting and run out for pizza once in a while. Clanky’s nothing special to look at and has no weapons system but just like a big loveable dog he’s fun to have around. If you’d like to read more about Bee Boy and the Awesome 5! you can check out my website.
#3 Sammi Brand
Sammi Brand is an exuberant young woman who has caught the eye of the artistic trendsetter Carl Redmonde for her pioneering work with the hottest new technique, fire painting (where you literally paint with fire). This sweet young lady is bearing the sudden fame well, but being in a room with Carl for any amount of time may lead her to think of other uses for her fire brush.
Day 3 – Major Justice
A hero from the times long gone.
Real Name – Alex Johnson.
Aliases – The Clobbering Teen, later – Major Justice.
My own character from the Golden Age of comics.
Day 3 | Firebat
2012 – DAY 03
All characters are created by my 5 year-old son, The Junior Partner.  He has either drawn these characters on his own and I have recreated them here, or he has sat at my elbow dictating design and conceptual ideas like a creative, but frenetic, taskmaster.
FIREBAT
After an afternoon drawing various styles of Batarangs and then helping me make them with duct tape and cardboard, the Junior Partner wanted a “really big Batarang” to wear on his back like a jet pack.  This then lead us down the avenue of making a Batman Armor, a favorite theme when sitting in his bad at night drawing by the glow of his night light when he should have been asleep.
I took one his own drawings and made my own version, he colored it in and then suggested some changes (“Bigger arm guns”) and viola, Firebat.
The backstory changes a bit depending on the retelling but essentially, Firebat was given this armor from a very familiar bat-themed billionaire vigilante to “fly around and make sure bad stuff doesn’t happen.”  When he launches himself into the sky, his metallic yellow wings ignite, leaving a glowing flame insignia in the sky as he makes his rounds.  His giant forearm blaster arrays shoot fire in various forms and flavors as well as heat based force bolts to knock down criminals and doors without burning them.
#02 – The Wandering Heir
The Wandering Heir is a ghost who is trapped in the land he haunts.  He was the oldest son of the founder of a business empire.  His death is a mystery and he wishes that no one ends up in the same situation.  He is a benevolent spirit.
#02 Man of Sorrows
The Man of Sorrows is a sorceror who sought to trade his soul to an assembly of demons in exchange for immortality and incredible power. The demons, in a rare capricious moment of mingled mercy and cruelty, let him keep his soul instead. So he feels the full weight of all the evil he does, the suffering he causes, the certain knowledge that what he does makes the world a darker, meaner, lonelier place. The tears and pervasive aura of sadness comes from this weight, but it does not deter him from his pursuit of power.
He has now been alive for eight hundred years, but due to the demons’ deal, the emotional toll of the murderous soul eating, belief vampirism, and unspeakable rituals he must perform to attain whatever equivalent of godhood he seeks, has not dimmed one solitary bit. It hounds him now, drives him, has made him even more merciless. Those who know best hide their faces from this twisted messiah. Good friend, hope that you never hear those dragging yet persistent footsteps behind you. Pray your ears never know the sound of imps teeth grinding wet spectral flesh. Pray you never hear that voice full of the centuries’ tears, whispering in a trembling tenor “I’m so, so sorry….”
Day 2 – Brett the High Wizard
I love the idea of a stoned wizard peddling dope to kids on the corner of the street….
#2 Parasitic Tree Beast
Creature that starts out as a spore or seed like thing and grows under and then into a tree almost like a fungus. It then forms a bond with/fuses with the tree and the vine type appendages nourish the tree as roots would as well as the creature can move the tree if need be. It has a squid-like beak and can also use the appendages to catch prey. (Thought this one up yesterday but the other drawing took over)
#2 Alcatraz
#2 Alcatraz
Character Back Story:
Like most fighters of the pit, nothing is known about Alcatraz’s past. What his real name is, where he was born, who his family is. He ended up in the pit like most fighters do. At some point he was abducted from his former life and injected to this dark underworld. The need is high for new recruits, since fights often end with a death. The life expectancy of a pit fighter is a little over a month. New recruits go through reconditions and rebuilding. First their minds are erased, they become blank slates ready to be programmed to fight. To only care about fighting and winning. There are several managers (big bosses) that recruit, train, and house these fighters. Alcatraz fights for Boss Holiday.
Unlike most fighters in the pit who only dream of fighting and winning, Alcatraz dreams of escaping. To escape this violent world he knows he needs to survive the fights. Which means he has to be smarter, tougher, stronger and more lethal then his opponents. For him winning is living. Living for the next day, living to be free. He’s heard rumors that if you survive long enough, the “Boss” will take you out of the fights. Give you another job as one of his enforcers. Enforcing what, he doesn’t know. But he believes it has to be better then fighting everyday to the death.
When Alcatraz first started in the pits there was a top fighter named “Concrete Stain”, an undefeated fighter who had survived over a year. Then one day he was gone, not dead from a fight just gone. That’s when Alcatraz first heard the rumor. That elite fighters work for Boss Holiday in the outside, not just fighting for him in the pits. It might only be a dream but Alcatraz will keep surviving until he’s chosen, until he’s free.
Behavior Traits:
Resortful, Determined, Creative
Powers / Abilities / Skills:
Hand to hand fighting, Weapons (blunt objects, knives)
Notes:
I mentioned Boss Holiday in Alcatraz’s back story. He’s a character I created for the first 30 Characters Challenge. A Rockabilly Crime lord who employs “Super-Villains”

#3 Powernaut
Real name: Eric Casen
Height: 6’0
Weight:228 lbs.
Race:Caucasian Location: New York, NY
Powernaut is a former professional wrestler turned adventurer looking for where that adventure takes him. He was the bread winner for the United Wrestling Organization until the promoter and the board of the company decided to dismiss him due to his disagreement with him. So Sets himself on the adventure of his life as Powernaut, his wrestling name. Powers: Endurance and super-strength. Personality: A go-getter and someone you would wanna get to know.
#1 Prince Ou Si
A younger brother of often seen Prince Ou Ju, Prince Ou Si has a sulking yet proactive disposition. Unlike Ju, he prefers the quiet and solitude of the castle’s book chambers. He’s also more intelligent than many of his siblings, older or younger, but maybe not as wise.
Every morning at 5 am, the castle’s ceremonial bell tolls to signify the start of the workday. Si, despising loud noises, has a history of removing the bell from the hooks it hangs on.
Even though he’s of similar age to Ou Ju, he doesn’t wear yellow, a symbol of royal power, because he’s not mature enough; only those with actual monarchial powers wear yellow. Instead, he wears a warm gold color, simply a symbol of royalty, whereas Ou Ju is allowed to wear yellow.
