#01 – Anthony M.

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

He came in and sat down at the bar, eyes bloodshot, ragged clothes, scraggy hair, unshaven. Hunched over, arms folded on the bar, he sat motionless — gazing straight ahead with an empty stare that screamed defeat.

His appearance was so haggard he could be mistaken for homeless. He just sat in quiet desperation. Many dismissed him as a bum or a junkie. He certainly had the hollow face of a worn man. But Anthony M. wasn’t a bum. He wasn’t a junkie. He wasn’t drunk or stoned.

Just an hour earlier, Anthony was in a screaming match back home.

“F*cking b*stard!”

“Stop being an a**hole!”

“You’re a monster!!”

“I hate you!”

Every profane word was used…the worst ones more than a few times. They got so loud that he’d be surprised if the police weren’t waiting for him when he got back home. He hated himself. He hated his failure. How could he have let himself blow up like that — especially at his 12-year-old little girl?

It was she that had screamed the loudest and had cursed the most. After the third or fourth F-bomb, he snapped. He looked down and picked up the first thing he saw and threw it across the room in rage. It was her stacked schoolwork — it flew apart and papers and notebooks rained down in a flurry of chaos across the floor and furniture of her room.

The screaming continued, this time with his wife, who was furious at him for his outburst. She had to remind him their daughter had a condition called Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and that she couldn’t help acting that way. Of course, as soon as his temper got the better of him, he had remembered. He just wished he could have controlled himself better.

Anthony would never hurt his little girl. But tonight, he did. He screamed at her and made her feel worthless and unloved. Then after he realized what he’d done, he cursed himself for not having the strength to hold back his rage.

Anthony had always tried to be a good father. Tomorrow he promised to do better, but tonight he had failed, and he needed to punish himself for it.

#2 – Kamal Mahgoub

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

The son of a street merchant, 23-year-old Kamal is a brash, passionate young man desperate to carve out his own, unique life story.

Kamal was born in Port Said, the youngest of three children. As a child, his mother, Ayeda, provided the compassion, while his father, Youssef, was draconian, and frequently abusive. The family lived just above poverty, and Kamal spent most of his childhood working alongside his father at the family’s small electronics shop. Early in life, he showed an aptitude for electronics and all things mechanical, but his father shared little of his son’s ambition. A deeply religious man, Kamal’s eldest sibling, Sherif, was the family success story, going off to become one of the youngest Imams in the city. When Kamal’s other sibling, his sister Nabila won a scholarship to the University of Dubai, Kamal’s father pushed hard for him to follow in the footsteps of his elder siblings, lives Kamal wanted no part of. Kamal was interested in “frivolties” like arts, music, and the internet.

Eventually, Kamal’s relationship with his father reached a breaking point when his mother passed away when he was 17. His mother had provided all the encouragement and love in his life and in the wake of her death, his father became even more abusive, demanding Nabila return from university to run the house and dismissing Kamal, who was a disinterested, poor student, as the family failure. The pair came to blows when Youssef blamed Ayeda’s influence on Kamal for making him such a disappointment. Packing what little of a life he had, Kamal ran away to Cairo, and has not seen his family since.

Kamal has the next few years working odd jobs, sleeping on couches and watching life pass him by. He mourned the loss of his mother for over a year before finally beginning to open up to people. Finally, he fell in with a group of politically motivated university students, and got a job at a smartphone repair store.

Slowly, Kamal grew more poltical, and when the Arab Spring came to Egypt, he was one of the throngs of people in Tahrir Square. Caught up in the revolutionary fervor, he met Matthieu while, on his way to a protest with his friends, they were ambushed by a group of loyalists. When the fight began to turn against them, he ran, only to come across Matthieu, who helped him defeat his attackers.

As the revolution came to an end, however, Kamal found himself feeling betrayed, that the revolutionary nation he had hoped for was never going to become a reality. Beginning to look for a way out, he met Matthieu again in a cafe, and managed to fool the Frenchman into believing that he had family in Libya, and could help guide him through a suddenly volatile part of the world. Matthieu only discovered the ruse after the pair has crossed the border and walked directly into a ongoing civil war.

Through luck, lies, and a significant amount of favor-currying, the pair managed to escape, and upon arriving in Tunisia, Matthieu offered the youngster a chance to work with him, an offer Kamal immediately accepted.

A little under six feet tall, Kamal has thin, aquiline features, and is almost constantly seen fiddling with something in his hands and a messenger bag slung over one shoulder.

Whereas Matthieu is more impulsive, Kamal is much more reserved, prone to getting lost in his own thoughts. While he was a poor student, Kamal has discovered a deep interest in learning as much as he can about whatever he can get his hands on. He can be prickly, petulant and can hold a grudge, but Kamal is also immensely loyal, thoughtful, and increasingly concerned with issues of social justice. Despite occasional bouts of brooding and self-doubt, Kamal is a largely optimistic person, with ambition to spare.

Kamal has brought a kind of moral clarity to Matthieu’s work, opening their work up to helping those outside of the “-aire” tax bracket. In Matthieu, Kamal sees someone who lives a life he’d only dared to dream about, a person whose life he wishes to, in some ways, emulate, and a man who understands why “home” has become a complicated concept for him.

color pallets are cool~

My name is Anika Burrell, and I am an Illustrator, writer and Animator.  I am currently a student at The Art Institute of Colorado.

I love creating new characters, and developing old characters and drawing out or simply scripting stories.  My passion is World Building.

You will see sketches from me, maaaybe a few inked bitties, and possibly some existing characters.  But, mostly a lot of character sketches thought up on the fly.  Some may even become more developed over time.  Who knows~

#1 – Matthieu Giuly

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

38 years old, Matthieu is the son of two intellectuals who were born and raised in French Algeria. Matthieu was born twelve years after Algerian independence, the fourth of four children. His parents made sure the entire family had a strong sense of their identity, Matthieu’s family is made up of Pied-Noirs, and his parents taught him that he was not completely “French”, nor could his family return to live in what his parents considered their true home.

Matthieu was born in Marseille, and in his teenage years, began to relish his position as an “outsider” compared to many other students. He spent much of his time hanging out with less popular groups of students. Immigrants, social outcasts, Matthieu discovered he had a knack for walking between social groups with ease. An apt, if not always attentive student, Matthieu graduated from the University of Lyon with a degree in Applied Modern Languages. Matthieu is a polyglot, and can speak French, English, German, Spanish and Arabic fluently, and has a basic understanding of Italian, Chinese and Portugese.

Matthieu is a world-traveler, who has not stayed in any one part of the world for longer than three years since graduating from university. He has worked for several newspapers, UNICEF, and held down brief positions with the French Foreign Ministry, Monsanto and Deutsch Bank. He has visited or lived in 82 different nations. Currently, he works as an international fixer, a go-between for the wealthy. He helps Chinese businessmen plan trips to Miami, assists members of the Saudi Royal family buy homes in Macau. He is well-known for his creativity, his problem-solving and his willingness to travel anywhere in the world at the drop of a hat.

Matthieu’s wanderlust is a strong product of his upbringing. Due to his parent’s influence, he’s never felt at home anywhere, and was surprised to find, when he did finally visit Algeria, that he didn’t feel the spiritual connection to it that his parents made it seem like there was.

With an impressive list of contacts, Matthieu can often be choosy about who he works for. He has been blogging his travels for the last two years.

Matthieu is six feet tall, with a short mop of messy black hair, wide brown eyes, a round face and a seemingly permanent five o’clock shadow. Despite the occasionally high-profile nature of his job, he always prefers casual clothes to suits and corporate wear.

Matthieu is distinctly impulsive, occasionally disorganized, and has never planned out his life much more than a month in advance.

Gregarious and kind, Matthieu is a kind of social chameleon, able to fit in equally well at a pub in Cardiff as at a black tie dinner in the Hamptons. He is, however, slow to trust, and his travels mean he has lived much of the last 15 years alone. His relationships are short, and most of his friendships exist on a professional level, rather than a personal one. While he is a adept liar, Matthieu is not without morals, although he fully understands the nature of his work means working with unseemly characters. He simply tries to do the best he can in a business where morals can be a hindrance, not a help.

Matthieu met Kamal in 2011, and eventually found in him someone just like himself, a person who feels that, for whatever reason, they cannot return home, that there is little or nothing for them there, or that they do not have a “home”. Moreover, loathe as he would be to admit it, years of traveling alone had begun to wear on him, and Kamal quickly proved himself invaluable, personally and professionally.

#1 Lt. Sarkoa Threll

| November 2, 2012 | 1 Comment

Lt. Threll is the head of the Arcane Prevention task force of the Commonwealth Regiments.  Armed with a bone gauntlet that absorbs and redirects magical energies (though hardly reliably), she and her subordinates travel the Commonwealth of Etane, rooting out rogue sorcerers and investigating the most dangerous magical incidents.

I didn’t get around to writing an introductory post, so hello!  This is my first time doing 30 Characters and I’m excited to contribute.  I’ve got a comic in the works (of which the above is a part of) that may someday see the light of day.  Can’t wait to see the future submissions form you all.

Day 1 – Ryan Elizabeth

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Ryan Elizabeth is a demon girl who lives in a quaint town in Hell.  She’s like any normal teenage girl in that she loves hanging out with her friends and is struggling to like, grow up, or something???  Ryan Elizabeth (please, her friends just call her Ryan) has a part-time summer job at a cemetery in town, where she oversees the arrival of Earth’s newly-dead.  Sometimes the job requires subduing aggressive dead people, but usually they arrive very confused and/or depressed, at which point she sees them to the cemetery counselor and returns to her post.

Ryan has had a pretty unremarkable life and has a wonderful family despite growing up poor and having ongoing money problems.  She is very bright, intelligent, and kind-hearted but tends to be lazy and completely unmotivated.  Ryan does not have any big dreams for her future, choosing instead to live life day-to-day and just “see what happens”.  She supports her two best friends with all her energy but often envies them, wishing she could be passionate about something for herself.

Day 1 – Donald Griddle

#1 Seaweed

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Seaweed is an aquatic humanoid-beta type who after being lost to her clan was adopted by a sea dragon. It is fiercely protective of her and she often lays within it’s coils.

(This is one of those that took on a life of it’s own. Not what I intended to do at all and she even originally started out as a doll or cyborg type thing and this is what she became…..I had a blast) ….Also looks a lot better larger.

Day 1: Felix

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Felix is your stereotypical loner type. Handful of friends, each as socially awkward as the other. What sets Felix apart from the other kids is his debilitating Asthma. Even standing to quickly can cause Felix to have an episode. Needless to say, Felix is slow, very slow. Due to increased smog in Havenport and a demand on inhalers Felix must buy his next prescription from an unnamed seller on ebay. One puff of this mystery inhaler and Felix is transformed intooooooo

#1 Dra’Zun, Guardian Droid

Character Back Story:
A rouge asteroid hit and destroyed the planet Azari Prime, home of the Dra’Azari Royal Family. The Royal family and the planets inhabitants mounted a vast interstellar survival plan. Financed by the Royal family and all the resources of Azari, 20 ark space ships were created. The survivors would travel to Azari-3, a colony on the outskirts of their solar system. Azari-3 rich with natural resources would be their new home world. The Royal family created their own ship for the voyage, it was to carry their entire Dra’Azari Family. Guardian Droids were built and placed in all ark ships, also named GD-Units. Their primary functions and programming was to care for the needs of the ark passengers. These droids would maintain the ships, cook, clean, police, and educate. On the Royals ship there were 8 GD-Units.

Ezbeet Dra’Book (Ezbeet equaling to a Duke in Earth terms) sees this migration as a great opportunity to rise higher in the family court. He reprograms the Guardian Droids on the Royal’s Ark to turn on the family and kill them all. In the middle of the mayhem Dra’Book sabotages all the escape pods and uses the only functional one to escape. The GD-Units manage to slaughter almost everyone on the ship within hours. A few of the royalty manage to survive the attack in the children’s nursery, including Ezbeet Dra’Hexra. Dra’Hexra uses the ships computer to reset one of the Guardian Droids, GD-Unit 5.

As a result of the reset, GD-Unit 5 malfunctions merging both it’s origin programing with that of Dra’Book. It believes that it must educate and protect the Royal family by eliminating it. It quickly destroys the other Guardian Droids to protect the survivors. GD-Unit 5 then gathers the remaining Royalty including the children. GD-Unit 5 explains that in must protect the Dra’Azari Royal Family. It then attacks them, killing everyone except the 6 youngest. It has calculated that it must educate, train, and manipulate these six children to be the new leader of the Azari people.

In the chaos of the GD-Units attack, the Royalty’s ark ship was sent severely off course. Years pass by and the children become adults, they began calling the Guardian Droid, Dra’Zun. “Dra” for their family name and “Zun” meaning teacher. In the years that have passed Dra’Zun has taught his students to be ruthless, calculating and unforgiving in all matters. It has also manipulated their genetic code to enhance their strength, durability, speed and intelligence. Dra’Zun’s final lesson will be to have the his students fight and kill each other, until the strongest and most intelligent one survives. This “Winner” will be the rightful ruler of the Azari people. He or she will begin by conquering small worlds to build an army, then take back the kingdom. Dra’Zun plans to remain as this true ruler’s faithful servant.

Behavior Traits:
Patient, Calculating, Loyal, ruthless

Powers / Abilities / Skills:

Day 1 Scrollbot

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

I want this to be as honest as possible. Meaning, this is my first attempt at completely drawing all digital in Manga Studio. I sketched, “inked” and coloured using nothing but the software. From what I’ve used so far I really like it. Not my result, but once I get the hang of it, I’m sure the results will look better.

#1_ George the troll

| November 2, 2012 | 4 Comments

I had some paintings of a railroad I had done with nighttime lighting and I thought it would be fun to add a troll in it. Not an ‘under-the-bridge’ troll; more like the trolls in Troll Hunters. This is the thumbnail I took to the next stage.

Day 1 “HOT STUFF”

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Casey Richards has the ability to manipulate his body heat as well as control, generate and absorb Fire. His abilities are often based upon his emotions, so his energy levels vary. The most intense or active stage of his power is when he is in battle; second to battle is engaging in Some form of  passion and sexual activity. Ironically, he obtained the name “Hot Stuff” from an old girlfriend. Not for his abilities, but for his good looks.

#01 Sacco Hammers

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

While leading a sliding scale qi gong class at a co-op farming community, a nearby meteorite gave Brad Hammersleigh superhuman strength and increased inner and outer toughness. He took the name of anarchist martyr Fernando Nicola Sacco, one of his heroes, and shortened his last name to an implement of the working class.

He is unaware that his nom de guerre also completes the phrase “dumber than a…” He isn’t dumb by any stretch, but he can be… obtuse. A side effect of his powers is the ability to recollect all kinds of facts about Elinor Ostrom’s work on sustainable resource management, or the finer nuances of Kropotkin’s philosophy of Mutual Aid. The angrier he gets the cooler and more laser like his arguments become. The more facts and figures arrange themselves for his benefit. Call him the Credible Hulk.

He takes on anyone taking advantage of the powerless, with his enhanced mind, soul, and body. The tattoo on his forearm is Latin and reads “dum spiramus tuebimur” — “While we breathe, we shall defend.”

Jason Haven – Day One

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

First character out of thirty! This is how most of them will look. I apologize now – I am not the best artist. Haha! This is Jason Haven 🙂 A pretty awesome guy from a story me and a friendKruer are writing. He’s sarcastic, hilarious, and at times, a bit immature. But we accept him for who he is. He’s in a band (plays guitar) and he hangs out with his cousins mostly (who are his band mates).

Acheryx

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

A stygian owl in the mortal world, a spirit guide to the souls of dead men and women in the ethereal lumen. Acheryx will advise, assist, and guide the soul of the human he has chosen through life, and the trials of death. Success in such trials will determine his human’s eligibility to be recycled through the mortal realm with mental and physical upgrades. Subsequent victories in death’s trials entail further perks upon reincarnation–many cycles nearly always ensure a spirit and body capable of great influence upon the world.

While spirit guides are able to craft for themselves nearly any form they wish–however Acheryx prefers a beast and anthropomorphic form in addition to his corporeal owl body while assisting his human in the afterlife.

Day 2 | Birdclaw

| November 2, 2012 | 3 Comments

2012 – DAY 02

All characters are created by my 5 year-old son, The Junior Partner.  He has either drawn these characters on his own and I have recreated them here, or he has sat at my elbow dictating design and conceptual ideas like a creative, but frenetic, taskmaster.

BIRDCLAW

The above design reflects a doodle I had left lying around…a redesign of the ROBIN costume for a Batman Fan-Art/Redesign Showcase I was toying with.  The Junior Partner took to the design and suggested various tweaks and after gardening at school, he wanted to add a garden claw style grappling hook/weapon like a bird of prey would use.

There’s not too much back story to the character except an “borrowed” acrobat/circus origin clearly inspired by hours of listening to my old 1970’s POWER RECORDS collection.

#02 – Vix

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Vix is a vicious assassin that kills for pleasure more than it is for money. Never let that calm facade fool you though. And, peace of advice, his weakness lies on his head~ (PS: he’s not topless in the pic on the right. it’s a tight shirt.)

01: Psy-Nav

| November 2, 2012 | 0 Comments

Character Name:
Psy-Nav

Brief Bio/Description:
Psy-Nav is a hybrid being designed by the military to serve as a mobile navigation and control unit with combat and stealth parameters. Psy-Nav identifies as female and she has two standard avatar forms: a console-mounting head unit, and a full humanoid body for combat and stealth operations. She is very assertive and has a spunky, abrasive attitude – she blends in well with “the guys” in the units to which she is assigned.

Style Commentary:
I’m approaching this challenge as an exercise-a-day and avoiding themes and solid obligations. As such, I scribbled out Psy-Nav’s body sketch first, primarily in my own style, and got a feel for the character’s personality and decided to do a head-shot. I was inspired by oasiswinds and artchoface from tumblr – the drawing here is, in my opinion, a successful merge of the three styles.
