Moses Five

Moses Five

Once upon a time, everyone had heard of the fearless space bandit and freedom fighter Moses Five. His attacks to stop the villainous Vesper Geist from taking over the galaxy, and his expeditions to the edge of known space to conduct raids on the insectoid Spiddyocks were legendary. Sure, he flouted the law, but it was all for the best, and he was the hero people needed.

Finally, with a temporary dispensation from the Consortium of Free Systems, he participated on the decisive attack that defeated Vesper. Before they landed, she contacted Moses privately, and made him an offer of immortality if he merely held back behind Consortium forces. Moses Five bowed to no one, but especially not his oldest enemy, and he refused. He and the Consortium defeated Geist’s forces, but the woman herself disappeared. “Some sort of chronal anomaly” was the scientists’ best explanation. Shortly after that, Moses Five began having visions of his much older self in the future, and oddly enough, suddenly remembered having had them all of his life.

150 years later: the Consortium has expanded beyond the galaxy, and Moses Five is still out at the edges of it, in Outer Harappa, mostly in the Res Extensa, a bar run by humanoid hairless cats. When not lost in a fog of intoxicants and deja vu, he makes his money on this outlaw planet as an all-around fixer and low-rent “knuckle-duster”, hiring his skills out to the highest bidder. Bitter and broken-down, he dreams of his younger days, before a newly stable Consortium decided it no longer had a political incentive to tolerate popular bandits who would challenge its authority. Few remember his legend now, and some days he regrets not taking Vesper Geist up on her offer. But he hasn’t chosen to spend his last days in this forsaken rock on a whim – out at the edges of settled space, there are more chronal anomalies than elsewhere, and time tends to slip out of joint. When the nearby dying stars’ flare activity is high, his dreams of youth become far more vivid…

(Note: the idea of splitting the story between young and old bandit came from this post on Project Rooftop, where two guys submitted versions of the X-Men character Corsair, and Joel Priddy commented that it’d be cool to see a story split between the two submission. Four and a half years later, I haven’t forgotten that idea, and since I hadn’t seen anyone do something like it, I decided to put something together. I hadn’t seen that post since then until I went to find it today, and the similarities and differences between my versions and their much-better-drawn versions is interesting to me.)

No. 27- The Insecurity Guard

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: The Insecurity Guard

Actual Name: Unknown

Age: 30s

Occupation: Instigator, Security Guard?

Short Background:
He’s dressed like a security guard, but his job is to breed insecurity in malls across the country. He is never at the same mall more than twice (which is more than enough time to sew distrust and fear). Some people say he’s an old black man, other say he is a young Asian man with a southern accent. One thing is for sure, he is not using his power for good or evil. He is just being an asshole.

The idea popped into my head, but there wasn’t much about it except the description above. I might flesh it out.

No. 25- The Deafening Silence

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: The Deafening Silence

Actual Name: Unknown

Age: Unknown (assumed to be in his 20s)

Ethnicity: Unknown

Occupation: Supervillain

Short Background:
The name “the Deafening Silence” is kind of a half truth. People often assume that it means that he is deaf, but he isn’t. He’s mute. This makes him a much better villain than his peers because he never monologues. The name also refers to his ability to mute the sound around him for a distance. It is unknown how far he can stretch this barrier, but some researchers wonder if he is holding back. While he is a competent villain, he is often confused with heroes like Mr. Bat and Knight Moon. Depending on his mood, he may help people when asked or he may rob them.

He is very good at pantomiming which makes him an amazing partner at Charades. He is also very quick at writing notes and keeps a notepad around just in case.

Design:
Looks like a nocturnal hero, but isn’t. Wears black, gray, and white.

No. 26- The Glutton

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Name: The Glutton

Actual Name: Stacey Michaels

Age: 39

Occupation: Unemployed/ Former Supervillain

Short Background:
Once upon a time, Stacey was a member of one of the most feared Supervillain Groups, “The Seven Sins”. He lived like a rock star and was on the front page of many newspapers. As the Glutton, Stacey is on top of the world.

Then the group disbanded.

Now, Stacey spends his days living off of his mother. However, when two of his old teammates want to recruit him for one last job, he hopes that it will bring back all of the fame he once had.

Despite being called “The Glutton”, Stacey is actually quite healthy. People assume that he will be a morbidly obese man, but his name is more related to his powers rather than his physical condition.

Stacey was born with the ability to drain the life from other people. At full power, he could kill a room full of people in seconds, but he tries to keep it low. Because of this, Stacey rarely needs to eat or sleep. He uses his power in order to do important things like play WoW and work on his autobiography (though he is only in the first chapter).

From Stacey’s point of view, you can only go up when you’re already at the bottom of the barrel.

If only he knew.

Long-Box is likely the most obnoxious and youngest member of the Collection Agency, always citing continuity errors or asking about validity of an argument by asking if it’s “canon” or not. He disguises himself using the classic Clark Kent Method of putting on a pair of glasses.

# 20 : The Jackal

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

A technological cultist, The Jackal

Once a former Loman Field Agent, Farwed Zachari came upon the Heliopolis Society and instead of preventing their operations of stealing one of the recently discovered  Emerald Tablets of Thoth, assisted in their escape and killed two of his comrades. Now a member of the Heliopolis Society, Farwed was placed within the Order of Set and donned the guise of Set’s son, Anubis. As Agent Anubis, Farwed raided and stole experimental equipment from the Loman Institutes Research Labs and became the Heliopolis Society’s top agent.

Farwed began to take on contract work on the side and gave himself the handle , The Jackal, as a nod to his membership with the Heliopolis Society. Farwed’s biggest crime was the attempted highjacking of the Loman Organization’s top airship, The Abraxis. Though the Loman Organization’s personnel were successful in fending off the invasion, The Jackal still eluded capture and is still in possession of classified experimental tech.

Abilities: As a former Loman Agent, Zachari is knowledgeable of occult and ancient cultures, while trained in weapons and hand to hand combat. As a member of the Heliopolis Society, Zachari has expanded his knowledge in all aspects of the occult, while under the Order of Set, Zachari now possesses knowledge of black magic, particularly death curses.

In addition to mystical talents, Zachari possesses a prototype nanotech/memory cloth hybrid body armor with a neural interface that enables the suit to shapeshift into components to aid the user. These abilities also include a stealth mode and physical enhancements that make The Jackal an imposing threat.

Creation: Initially, The Jackal was going to be a tiger themed villain for a superhero comic, but once the project was abandoned, I set about in reworking the look. I came up with the Jackal idea and was setting him up as a street level foe, with a Ghost Rider spiked biker suit and chain belt. Then when working on the Loman Organization, I figured a way to implement him via elements of the real-life Heliopolis Society, which was an antagonistic force in Dark Horse’s Edward Gray comics, and my fictional Order of Set cult idea. His suit is based on previous X-Men leather outfits, with the Gantz suits being the heavy influence on his visual style, while making key areas around the suit (collar & gloves) resemble something Egyptian. I also practiced a lot on drawing that head, from every angle and from every look to nail it down. In fact, when one of my friends was making a Jackal themed character, I instructed him on designing the character’s helmet based on my own experiences in drawing jackal-inspired headwear. Just wanted to make that special anecdote known.

Howard is a senior employee and inventory manager at CPU Central, the company that Theodore and Delaney work at.

He’s a little rough around the edges, particularly around the engineers and builders who tend to be younger and more multi-cultural, as opposed to the first generation chinese immigrants that make up the shipping and management departments of the company. His attempts at humor often come up short, which only encourages him to be more taciturn and gruff.

He takes his work very seriously and runs a very strict ship on inventory. Even if he didn’t keep rigorous check out logs for testing equipement he’d be able to track down missing items just by memory in most cases.

Howard is married with an elementary age daughter, born in america. They live in a middle class apartment in a nearby primarily asian community.

# 19 : Lord Masque

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Vampiric club owner, Lord Masque.

Owner of Danse Macabre, Lord Masque is the main proprietor of this gothic themed nightclub which celebrates Victorian and vampiric subcultures with exotic burlesque shows and modern industrial music, while secretly a hotspot for vampire meetings and gatherings. Lord Masque is an unabashed vampire who prides himself on cashing in on humanity’ obsession with vampires while lavishing in the sheer debauchery that his club brings about.

Little is known of his true name, as he has kept that his most closely guarded secret, thoug hrumor cites him as a profound influence to Vlad Tepes and Bram Stoker, while some say he was The Ripper himself, and even more believe him to be one of the Old Ones within the Vampire Bloodline Houses. The only concret fact given is that his whole body was disfigured from an unknown encounter, and he has work protective attire for most of his undead life, with the mask being the sole remaining cover for his disfigurement.

Lord Masque uses his name as a corporate mascot, while he uses proxies and underlings to carry out his daytime activities, while he represents the “face” of Danse Macabre. To avoid an incursion with the Loman Organization, Lord Masque acts as an informant to the Organization in regards to vampire culture and in return, Lord Masque makes sure his vampire patrons do not feed on any of the human patrons under their Protectorate Accords. Though that hasn’t stopped select vampires, even Lord Masque, from side-stepping such rules, which some agents, particularly Adam Mortensen, seeks to expose Lord Masque, of such wrongdoing.Until such a thing happens, Lord Masque enjoys his nights out in his club, while behind closed doors, plots to overthrow the current Vampire Houses and restore his true “Self” into prominence.

Abilities: Lord Masque is a true vampire of an ancient bloodline. As such, he possesses abilities prevalent in most vampires; such as superhuman strength, speed, and stamina. He is capable of hypnotizing through vocal stimuli, yet is vulnerable to sunlight, silver , and garlic.

Lord Masque possess  a solid business acumen and is a shrewd politician, from running a niche -themed club and exploding it into a trendy hotspot while deftly preventing it from being overwhelmed from pressure on both the Vampire Houses and the Loman Organization. Secretly, Lord Masque desires to destroy all his threats, yet favors clandestine tactics over brute force.

Creation: Lord Masque was essentially just my high school idea of having a vampire wearing a mask to conceal his true identity, ala Phantom of the Opera. The nightclub idea most likely came from watching TruBlood, with Blade subtext, and thinking that a Vampire would be fairly smart in running a club that capitalizes on people’s fascination with vampires and gothic subculture by running a club that celebrates it. I then integrated him into the Loman universe as being an informant on Vampire culture while still keeping a villainous undercut with him, as a clever villain is one who doesn’t want to get caught.

#26 Honor Prescott – Prospector

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

As the sun beat down on the rocks spread before me, I realized that I had hit it rich. The yellow veins sparkling in the crags were worth more money than anything. Once I got this claim staked and sold, I’d be richer than Croesus. Then I could go back home and show Mama.

Mama hadn’t wanted me to go out west. Anytime Papa would sit down and read some of the dreadfuls to me, stories about cattle-rustling, train robbing and saloons, Mama would always be sitting right there tut-tutting.

“Papa, why are you putting such ideas into their heads? No daughter of mine is going to leave the nice civilized world to explore that bastion of barbarism.”

And Papa would nod his head in agreement and stop reading aloud. But then after Mama went to sleep, he’d come into our rooms and finish the story of the Outlaw Billy the Kid and Marshal Garrett. It was those stories that made me come out here, to the open prairie.

But I didn’t come quickly. No when gold was discovered out in Cali, I stayed behind and waited. The time wasn’t right for me yet. Then there was the War Between the States, and it wasn’t safe for me to go then, with Papa gone fighting and no one to run the farm but Mother and me.

After the war though, there wasn’t nothing to keep me any longer. Papa never came back from fighting, and pretty soon after Lee surrendered, some Union boys came through and said all are land was property of the government. I wanted to fight them, but Mama held me back.

“I’ve lost your father and I’ve lost my house, but I’m not losing my daughter,” she said. And I couldn’t stare into those sad eyes, ones that hadn’t seen smiles or laughter since Papa left, and fight the blue boys.

We moved to a small shack, barely big enough for a horse to lie down in. We took in laundry and did mending to make our way. But it wasn’t any way for Mama to live. She was already weak, coughing nearly everyday. There had to be a way to make things better.

Then I remembered the stories dad read to me, about cities of gold and rivers of silver. Here at home there was nothing for us but a long of work and dying tired, and I thought that maybe, just maybe, in the West I could make my way.

#28 Lead Shadows

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: Quick and Gold Dust

These creatures of darkness vary widely in size, shape, opacity, etc., and, like Gold Dust, they can change their shape at will. In fact, they share many similar powers with the Golden Guardian: they can also phase through walls, generate darkness (as opposed to light), touch someone and make them depressed (as opposed to happy), and increase the weight of objects, including their own bodies. One special power they have is invisibility. The light generated by Gold Dust reveals them when they are hidden.

The Lead Shadows are meant to be the opposite of “light” as represented by the Golden Guardian. As such, they are dark, and also heavy, both opposites of light. They can make themselves heavy enough to crush, while Gold Dust can only make herself light. They are destroyers, while Gold Dust only has the power to destroy them. One interesting aspect of the Lead Shadows is their ability to weigh down a person’s spirit, causing them to sink into a depression. Gold Dust can counter this with a simple touch.

No one is sure exactly where the shadows come from, but it is written in the Golden Book that somewhere in the world is a Leaden Book from which the shadows are generated. It is Quick and Gold Dust’s quest to find the book and close it forever.

#27 “Gold Dust” Serena Powell

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: Quick and Gold Dust

Height: 5’ 3”

Body Type: Flat chest, stubby fingers, but otherwise your average teenage girl.

Hair: Deep, dark black. The kind of black you only get with dye. It sweeps across her forehead in angry bangs, and flies out from behind her head.

Eyes: Hazel. Always turned down critically, giving her the “angry teen” look.

Race: White

Age: 10th grader

Attire: Mostly dark colors. Long sleeves and long pants. Likes gray jeans. Wears a gold locket under her shirt. Likes boots and Converse All-Stars.

Powers: Serena herself has no powers, but whenever Quick opens the Golden Book, she instantly becomes the Golden Guardian. As the Golden Guardian, Serena is made completely out of shiny gold dust. She can change shape, generate light (later, enough to blind or burn), teleport (move at the speed of light), phase through walls, or make certain objects lighter than air. She can also touch people and make them happy, specifically if those people have been darkened by Lead Shadows. All of these powers come to her with time, as Quick reads more of the Golden Book.

Personality: Serena is as tough as nails, at times even mean. She has few friends, and no siblings. She is very smart, and enjoys exchanging trivia with Quick. Her friendship with Quick has really helped her to open up as a person. Before she was something of a bully, but now she enjoys helping people. Bullying was her way of defending herself from similar torments that she endured when she was younger. She hates her name because it makes her sound like a popular girl.

Role in the story: As Golden Guardian, Serena automatically teleports to Quick’s side whenever he opens the Golden Book. She uses her powers to fight off Lead Shadows who want to close the Golden Book, or kill Quick, its Reader. As her alter-ego, Serena, she is a high school girl searching for her place in the grand scheme of ‘normal life’. Quick is pretty much her only friend at the beginning of the story.

Her goal is to go with Quick to find the source of the Lead Shadows and stop them from being created/released upon the world.

29 Spindo Sword Fist by Beausephus + Son

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME:  Spindo Sword Fist

DATE OF CREATION:  November 2011

CONCEPT:  “Spindo is a robot with swords that he can use as swords and then put n his arms and make them spin around shoot off at stuff.  But he really likes to spin the swords around and scare bad guys.  His eyes glow.”

_______________________________

My son came home from school with a small picture made by tracing geometric shapes that he turned into a robot super-hero character. He wanted me to draw it.  So I gave it a try and then he offered edits with such encouraging comments such as, “No, Daddy, you’re not good at this,”  and “That’s not good.  It’s supposed to look like this (insert sound effects made by a four year old imitating explosions and what he thinks sword spinning robots sound like).”

After many attempts, here is the final version of Spindo Sword Fist.  My son still wants me to change the eyes.

Thanks for checking out our stuff.

#26 “Quick” Quique Rojas

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

Universe/Storyline: Quick and Gold Dust

Height: 4’ 11”

Body Type: Long arms, skinny, hasn’t quite grown into his shoes yet. Hitting puberty.

Hair: Black, slicked back kinda randomly.

Eyes: Dark brown, pretty much black. Hidden behind big glasses.

Race: Latino

Age: 6th grader

Attire: Quick tends to wear t-shirts and shorts, in the manner of most boys his age. (As pictured here in a shirt featuring a familiar logo.)

Powers: Quick is mildly precognitive and empathic. He occasionally has dreams of traumatic future events, which he is only sometimes able to prevent. He is a very good guesser. He can finish people’s sentences (and often does), and sometimes he feels what others are feeling even if they are far away by just thinking about them. These last couple skills get better the more he knows the person. Quick is only slightly abnormal, and someone like him could easily exist in the real world today without anyone knowing.

Personality: Quick is smart, like unbelievably smart, which makes him a little cocky. But generally he is sweet. He likes to share random trivia with his friends and large family, or, if none of them want to hear it, his pet catfish, Bark. Any time he has a dream about someone being in trouble, he tries to help that person. Only his mom and a couple of siblings know about his dreams.

Role in the story: One morning, Quick wakes up from a strange dream that he can hardly remember. He wakes up with a weight on his chest, and beneath both his blankets and his shirt finds the Golden Book. Quick is the Reader of the Golden Book, which means only he can even see what’s written inside. Once the book appears, strange things start to happen. People all over town are being threatened by dark shadowy figures called Lead Shadows.

Quick has a dream about a girl dying in a school bus crash when one of these shadows attacks. He saves the girl, Serena, and she becomes indebted to him. When next they meet, Quick reads to her from the Golden Book, and she becomes the Golden Guardian, sworn to protect the Golden Reader from the Lead Shadows. The unlikely duo fight off the shadows and search for the Leaden Book, which needs to be shut in order to stop the flow of shadows.

# 18 : Captain Tobias ” Toby” MacArthur

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

The overseer of Team Zeus, Captain Tobias “Toby” MacArthur.

Before he was commander of Team Zeus, Tobias MacArthur served in the Navy for several years before his first encounter with the paranormal. It occurred while his ship was on port in Morroco, where several of his crew were seduced, driven mad, and killed by the female djinn, Aisha Qandisha. Tobias confronted her after she claimed her latest victim, yet she too, made Tobias the recipient of an oncoming storm of demonic and spiritual entities, until agents from the Loman Organization warded her away and saved Tobias from having his mind broken. The experience resulted in Tobias from being discharged from the Navy due to mental issues, yet “Captain Toby” was determined to prove that he was not mad. Tobias actively sought out the existence of the “Lo-Men” and eventually met with the enigmatic Arthur Loman,

From there, Captain Tobias MacArthur was hired into the Loman Organization as a Field Officer and encountered even more supernatural and preternatural phenomena, including the capture and enrollment of Walter Ramsey. Eventually, Tobias was promoted to the rank of Ship Captain and is one of the first Aerial Captains to command an airship. His ship, The Abraxis, is the Loman Organization’s main mobile command center, and as such, is the first response to any and all threats or conflicts within the supernatural community. This responsibility is one Tobias bears greatly, and the lives of each and everyone of his crew affects him as Tobias never forgot what Aish Qandisha did to his crew mates, and that memory is what propels him to command his crew and bear their pains upon his own.

Abilities: Tobias uses the combined knowledge from both is time in the Navy and in Loman to command his crew and maintain order in his ship. As such, Tobias does not often engage in field operations, unless as a delegate or emissary with the various races and entities that the Loman Organization deals with.

Even so, Tobias still maintains his military exercise regiment and weapons training so that he is still fit and disciplined, even in his old age.

Tobias is a respected and capable commanding officer, as he is able to effortlessly issue commands to his field agents, discuss a pan-dimensional treaty, and conduct a guest lecture without feeling overwhelmed or overburdened with his responsibilities.

Creation: The commanding officer idea was easy, the name was the most imaginative part, as his name comes from a female friends father, who owns his ship and we call him “Captain Toby”.

# 17: Hayden Seer

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

A speedy summoner, Hayden Seer.

Hayden Seer was an aspiring artist in the state of Washington. As a child, Hayden discovered he can make his doodles come to life and be his playmates. These were fairly harmless and were mainly used to entertain himself with, until upon his teens, when preparing for an upcoming gallery, his pictures came to life and ran rampart throughout the gallery. Hayden’s parents, office workers for the the Loman Organization, brought Hayden to the Loman Institute where he would better understand his ability. However, Hayden’s ability is a rare case, as summoners usually make contracts and call forth existing entities, not create them from thin air. This puzzle led many Mages within the Loman Institute to learn from him, yet Hayden is still trying to understand the full extent of his abilities through trial and error and from adapting the current tenants of magic and applying them to his particular form of magic.

As a Mage Agent of Loman, Hayden is a field operative, like Deidra Edelweiss, who employs magic as their primary weapon in combat, yet as a Mage, Hayden also works as a Mage counselor and researcher in studying the arcane arts.

Abilities: Hayden is a specialist in a rare form of summoning magic; where he summons images that are his own creation. As such, Hayden carries around a portfolio book with drawings that he has drawn and summons them via a blood seal offering. The creatures that Hayden summons exist as long as Hayden is willing to offer the blood for their continued existence as size determines the blood offerings, as a larger creature will require more blood and a shorter duration compared to a smaller creature and a longer time limit. As such, Hayden usually keeps his summoned creatures between 90 seconds to 15 minutes summons no more than three creatures, as such any longer or any larger and Hayden begins to feel the effects of blood loss immediately.

Hayden is also proficient in other fields of magic, particular sealing, barrier, and not surprisingly, summoning magic. Hayden also understands tracking magic and light healing magic to cope with blood loss and to heal himself from fatigue. Aside from summoning magic, Hayden is adept at kinetomancy, speed magic, where Hayden accelerates his reflexes so as to be a more evasive target to opponents, add to his combat training, and Hayden is a capable fighter, when not summoning creatures.

Hayden has completed basic small arms and close quarters combat training, so he is capable of hand to hand and using small arms weapons.

Creation: Hayden was one of the first of three characters that came to me in my idea for Loman. It was a dream I was reading or watching a show with these “supernatural agents” where there was an element witch, an art summoner, and a legendary weapons specialist. Hayden was going to be a POV character as he will be introduced to the team around issue two. The name came around just using Hayden and the mythical troupe of a seer. His outfit was modeled after  the dream, where I saw such a robe, yet the detailing is modeled after a manga characters coat I saw. Originally, Hayden’s sketchbook was to be strapped to his back, but I changed it to be more portable and it will be attached to his hip, like a personal firearm. The creatures were going to be based around stylized or exagerrated representations of my own library of characters, so as to make it my own personal Easter Egg of ideas.

Day #28 – Marcus Winters the Movie Star

| November 29, 2011 | 0 Comments

In his younger days he jumped out of high buildings or ran atop trains moving at high speeds, now he sings with animals and dances a waltz or two.
