#23 Monaka the Monkey

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

#23 Monaka the Monkey (Fantasy Humor) Monaka lives in a world of cartoon characters with Harry the Horse, Oliver the Owl, and Saint Felix, patron saint of pleasure.

Once upon a time I had the idea of being a comic book artist. And recently I realized that the old time comic artists were in a situation where one week they would be doing a superhero story, the next a war comic, and a third a funny animal cartoon. In effect, they had to do a variety of different comics to bring their money in (and thus, be able to continue creating comics). So recently I started making my own anthropomorphic cartoon characters to help fill out my ability to draw comics — even if I never become a pro artist like I orginally planned.

#28: Landslide

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Real Name: Jason Barton

Age: 19

Height: 5’7″

Weight: 156 lbs.

Powers: Able to control sections of ground and earth

Character info: When I came up with the idea for Landslide, I visually had his appearance in my head for awhile. I knew he would be a character that just wore regular clothes, not being someone who wanted to conform to a hero/villain look. That also explains a lot about his personality; he walks the line between hero and villain. He uses his powers to benefit himself, but rarely hesitates if he sees someone in trouble. I have a few different ideas of where I might use Landslide, but rest assured, you’ll see more of him soon…

Bonzai!!!!!!!!Bonzai Guacamole has been sworn by duty and country to return the wayward princess to her throne. His strict adherence to this duty though, leaves a wake of devastation and loss of property.

You might ask yourself how does a kung-fu assassin move? By his sense of smell.

#18 – Ecstatic Ernie

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Ernie is a bit too excited about his gun. Kind of a dark topic here. No one should be that excited about a weapon.

I used an expression from a study, and the “pumping” arm gave me a little trouble, but I used the old “take your own picture in that pose” trick.

#15 – Sock thief

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

At little over 18 inches tall, this little guy is perfectly adapted to sneak into your home through your catflap and steal your socks.  Unlike their less evolved cousins, Pachysapiens tend to live in cooler climates so need a plentiful supply of wool to make they’re clothing and nests.  Fortunately humans seem to have two of each sock, so the thief is more than happy to take the spare.  The handy coathanger serves as the perfect grappling hook, sock snatching device and zip line handle.

#28 The Lady and the Prince of Lindworms

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Two royal warriors from great, clashing civilizations.   They met on the field of battle, but unknown to them they wielded sibling swords.  When they clashed, both were hurled to a distant continent, and they must work together through savage lands to find a way back home.

#17 – Happy Harry

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

A little dark humor here. Happy Harry doesn’t mind being in his current situation. In fact, I’m not so sure he’s aware of what trouble he’s in at the moment. He must have his reasons to be smiling, but with that look on his face, its kind of doubtful that he truly understands. Maybe that’s why he’s in trouble at the moment.

I actually got the expression from an expression study I did some time ago. Thought it was so innocent, and care free, that it needed a twist.

# 28 – the Flame

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

The Flame is another member of the Creature coalition.

[In 1974, at the age of 12, I drew a series of “comic books” detailing the adventures of Merrill, a 15-year-old human boy, in the Other Land, an invisible dimension which co-exists with our own.  The characters I am submitting throughout the 30 Days are the inhabitants of the Other Land.]

Red Runner. Getting a little abstract and “designy”.

The Red Runner will hopefully inspire you to forge ahead, full force. She never gives up. Always forward.

Obviously a good ol’ boy sidekick. Love those sideburns. Just as he likes his fast cars, burgers, and fries.

#25 – Savanna and Ari Langhorn

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

The Langhorns are a young couple, reasonably successful for their age, who just bought a new house. It’s the dream of their generation, and they were happy to finally have that part of the American dream that came with home-ownership.

The only caveat is that the house was the one owned by notorious serial killer Willie Heckle. Heckle’s crimes were heinous – fourteen boys tortured and murdered over the span of a decade. It’s said that the cop was so horrified by what he saw that he put a bullet in the kid’s head right before he put one in his own.

But such things didn’t bother a modern and progressive couple like the Langhorns. They knew there were no such things as ghosts, and if weird things happened in that house, well… Weird things happen in every house, don’t they?

Of course, they would soon find out that the house they bought is exactly what they were told it was: haunted. Now they have to find out what the ghosts want and how to make them leave.

#24 – Daniel King

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Flying. It’s probably one of the most popular super-powers out there. When you ask people what power they’d like to have, they often choose flight.

And why wouldn’t they? Flying is freedom, it’s the ability to go wherever you want without having to deal with such provincial problems as gas or bus fare. You have three dimensions all to yourself and vast, wide-open skies just calling your name.

For Daniel King, flying is just another way to get around. And not even the best way. It’s cold up there, for one thing, and windy as all hell. You can’t carry anything much bigger than a backpack, it’s hard to find your way around, and there are bugs all over the place. That’s not including the power lines you might smack into, airplanes that get really possessive about their airspace, and the occasional government scare. All in all, flying is nice, but it’s a “sometimes” mode of transportation.

His friend Jeff doesn’t think so, though, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Daniel to bring him up in the air.

#27 Sister Scissors

| November 28, 2011 | 3 Comments

Sister ScissorsSister Scissors

Sister Scissors is the spirit of broken connections. Romantic breakups, estranged families, that moment when you realize that a longtime friend is now just dragging you down, the person you cared for yet somehow lost touch with, all these fall under the purview of Sister Scissors. It’s nothing personal, just business. Sister Scissors harnesses the emotionally atomic energy created by breaking ties, and uses it to trade with other entities.

She is encountered by Tess Himmel during her search for The Infinite. The Infinite’s broken connection with the rest of the universe has made her far more powerful than she’s ever been, and people everywhere are starting to feel the effects, losing their empathy and not being able to maintain connections with colleagues and loved ones.

Her color is aquamarine, and her animal is the praying mantis. Even though she can’t be seen by mortals, you’ll know she’s nearby when you feel like you’re drowning.

#23 – Lord Clerk Uster

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

In a small kingdom, the day-to-day dealings of the castle are handled by people far less illustrious than the king, who has the far more important job of reigning to do. One of these less important people is Lord Clerk Uster, who knows full well his importance to the running of the kingdom. If the king died, after all, his eldest child would take the throne. There would be pomp and ceremony and mourning, but life would go on more or less as it had before.

If Lord Clerk Uster were to die, however, it would take months, if not years for a proper replacement to be found and for the kingdom to truly regain itself. His intricate, rational method of organizing accounts and the business of the kingdom is something that only he truly understands. He is, to put it simply, all that stands between order and chaos.

Or so he would like to believe, of course. He’s a small, weaselly-looking man, with a nasal voice, a love of proper procedure and – if dictionaries existed yet – would be the dictionary definition of “officious prick.”

His king has charged him with finding a proper suitor for the beautiful and talented Princess Cherin, a girl whom Uster has adored since she was a child. He truly loves her, even though he would never dare admit it even to himself, and this impedes somewhat the search for a proper husband….

25_Theodore

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Say hello to Theodore, coworker and partner in crime to Delaney. Theodore and Delaney work at CPU Central, a computer store in Industry, California. They both met when they joined the company as low end factory-line workers putting together lines of mass-produced PCs. Delaney was eventually promoted up to an engineer, but the two departments share one giant warehouse space so they still see plenty of each other.

Theodore lives with his retired stay-at-home father, ailing mother, senile grandma, and three younger siblings. While working full-time to supplement his father’s meagre retirement income he also attends night school at a local city college, working towards a degree in Ethnic Studies and Sociology.

Life at the house is pretty hectic usually so he will often head over to Delaney’s place to study or spend some free time.

28 – Wild Demon by Beausephus

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

CHARACTER NAME:  Wild Demon

DATE OF CREATION:  1992

CONCEPT:  A former superhuman hero from the 1800s turns against the mystic organization that granted him abilities and attempts to steal the magic weaponry he was armed with.  As punishment, he is allowed to escape but he is cursed to live for centuries.  the magic weapons turn to liquid and encase him in a semi-rigid shell that causes him excruciating pain.  The magic “skin” grants him limited superhuman endurance and strength.  He is able to relieve the pain by willing the “skin” to free him for a limited amount of time, but every moment he is free from pain more time is added to his tortured eternal life.  Wild Demon is attempting to destroy the mystic organization that he feels wronged him, by any means necessary, through anyone or anything that he feels is in his way.

__________________

The unfortunately named “Wild Demon” was a middle school Venom clone, Venom being very popular at the time.  The orignal character’s orogin is essentially the same, but his appearance was a smooth black, slick body suit a la Venom.  Wild Demon was driven mad and had increased strength and could drip acid from his hands.

This re-imagined version takes on a more “encrusted” look to the mystic skin hardening over his human body rather than a viscous sheath.

I liked drawing this version f the character.  it was an attempt to give some semblance of originality to an originally derivative character design

Thanks to everyone for their comments and support.  I appreciate everyone who even checks out my stuf for a moment.

27 – The Martinet

20111128-154238.jpg

Another villain for Insomniac. Like Chaos, this is another complete re-imagining of an old character, basing the new design mostly on the name alone. Martinet means “a strict disciplinarian” and is especially used in reference to the military, so this Martinet has a military background (hence the uniform) whereas the original was basically just Lady Deathstrike from X-Men, but with a whip that came out of her cyborg hand. I did keep the cyborg hand this time but that’s about it.

I figured the good guys needed a generic soldier uniform too. The masks will be a big help in creating battle scenes. I can totally see why old cartoons like GI Joe had loads of genetic looking soldiers…

#16 and #17 – Zandrosia Holbein and son, Gunther

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Zandrosia has a sweet poise about her like a daisy standing straight an tall amongst tulips. That same poise is often pronounced greater around her fellow nobles when she speaks, because Zandrosia is not one to hold her tongue. As the second-youngest daughter of a Drennish Merchant-noble, she has never had reason to hold her tongue either, because their family commands a distinguished fleet of fisherman that supply most of the region with dried fish for the long winters, and from there they expanded to a wide variety of staple foods that have kept their family prosperous and growing, And the Holbein women have seen to it that the family grown LARGE. Children are always running around playing, being tutored, or being told not ot trip up their elders so much.

Zandrosia is no exception. She was nearing eighteen without taking an interest in any of the business-interest/ suitors her father continuously pointed her way, and with no other romantic interest entering her life. When she was introduced to the then-freelancing Salvitore, she felt instantly enamored by his calm studious demeanor, and he was immediately entranced by her loud, honest giggling. It only took one night of hushedly whispering about business, commerce, plants and science on the balcony of her father’s party-home before her father set to work arranging their marriage, and solidifying his business ties to Salvitore. Though the two of them both know fully that her family intended her as a prize for their lifelong business arrangement, Salvitore and Zandrosia make up for it by being completely devoted to each other.

Salvitore not coming from a prominent family himself, they opted to keep her name for the marriage papers, and their children as well. Their first was born a little less than nine months after their marriage (yes… less… you read that right), and named Gunther after her grandfather. Gunther is a quiet child like his father, and normally Zandrosia feels no pain seeing her husband go off on business trips or reasearch expeditions, until recently, when their son has taken a stronger liking to him, and has taken to day-in-day out tantrums when left with the family’s nanny, forcing Zandrosia to watch after him personally when her husband is away.

They have had two other children since, a girl and then another boy. Their quickly growing family is one of the highlights of Salvitore’s life. A small spark of light that keeps him from ever regretting his leave from the Academy.

#24 – Zarnox

20111128-150529.jpg

Felt like drawing an alien this week. Also needed more villains for Insomniac. So I thought, why not set her and her city apart from Batman and Gotham by having a sub culture if stranded aliens living there. Of course they would be a misunderstood minority and done of them, like Zarnox here, would turn to crime. I like seeing freaks like him in smart suits smoking cigarettes.

#25 Louis Bingam – Farmer

| November 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

Louis walked into town with the sunrise, but he was dragged out to the undertakers at sunset.

Nobody knew what had gotten in to him. Louis was a good old boy. Worked hard all day and then came to the saloon to celebrate. Always free with a joke and a laugh, and not too cheap to buy round for his friends. Everybody liked him.

But then the Marshal came to town and set up shop. The Sheriff got real put off about it, but the governor was trying for statehood and sent a message to play nice with the Federal boys. So he just smiled as the black-coated man walked into the jail and took over the place.

For most of us, we didn’t even notice the man, except as one more face around the bar during the evening. But Louis couldn’t stop staring at him. From the first night the Marshal walked in, Louis was riveted, couldn’t take his eyes off the man.

A couple of the other folks and I thought it was a bit odd, man starin’ at another man like that, but Louis just laughed it off. Said he’d never seen a Marshal before. But that wasn’t right. He wasn’t staring like a cat, all curious. No, Louis was lookin’ at that man like a coyote watches a calf separated from the herd. Hungry and mean like.

That day we was all surprised to see Louis walk into town just as the sun came up. He was a farmer through and through. Never skipped a day of work, not even when he had a broken leg. He kept hoppin’ around trying to do everything himself, drove the man he hired just about plum-crazy. So what was a man with a work ethic like that doing taking a day off to go to town?

It was only when I saw the gun that I figured something was really wrong with the man. I called out after him, but he just turned and looked at me with cold hard eyes. These weren’t the same eyes I’d seen over many a glass of beer over the months. No these were the eyes of a killer. He’d ‘ve shot me as much as looked at me.

But he didn’t do either, just turned around and kept on walking. Walked straight up to the Marshal’s office and opened the door. Then there were three shots.

By the time I got to the door it was over. Louis was spread out on the floor and the Marshal had a gun in his hand a bullet in his chest. The doctor tried to cut it out, but Louis had been too good. The Marshal died that night.

They were buried on the same day. I can’t help but think that maybe Louis had a bit more of a smile on him than what the undertaker gave him.
