#12: Carpathia

Character info: About 11 years ago, when I considered starting my own comic, I started brainstorming SEVERAL names for characters, heroes and villains. Some of the characters I’ve already posted had names born out of that session (Rock Solid, Black Ice, Simoom, Esperance). Carpathia was one of these names. I had no idea who she would be or what she would look like. At one point, I gave her a goth appearance and she had fire powers; this later became my character Risk in The Adventurers of Liberty City. However, I still held onto the name. When I revived Carpathia for this challenge, I immediately knew I wanted to keep her dark in nature, but making her a villain this time. I started to picture something that looked like a cross between Vampira and something that Humberto Ramos would have put into his “Crimson” comic. However, she’s not a vampire, but an evil sorceress. I’m already really liking her and can’t wait to “debut” her in a book!

#12 shard of soul
deeper towards the center of the galaxy was a world with a heart of pure crystal. miners who found it were startled to discover each piece they broke off broke in a certain way. the shards were sold across the galaxy, but no one knew that the crystal wasn’t a natural formation. the people of that planet who had chosen to be converted into a huge crystalline memory matrix, and merge their souls to preserve themselves in face of a planetary catastrophe. shard is the first of her people to awaken. childlike and silly she is on a quest to find and awaken the rest of her people.
#11 (The Infinite) Tess Himmel
(The Infinite) Tess Himmel
Poor Tess. She’s always to vast or too small. Never the right size. She touches the infinite, it courses through her — it’s kind of her job to keep the universe going, just by being her. But she also feels, sometimes, ever so small, and then, when one can float in a bubble or get lost in the tall grass, the world seems full of gifts.
Her father was a German immigrant, her mother is Mongolian. A burgeoning punk/artist, her desperate parents sent her at 13 to the Madewell Girls’ Academy, a private ultraconservative Christian academy run by ex-radicals and bikers. They berated her, telling her she was small, nothing, a worm before Christ. Her rebellious nature meant she spent a lot of time in the Get Close to God room, essentially a small closet. She escaped into her imagination, and met an angelic being who offered her a deal: if she agreed to take on the responsibility of the Infinite, she would be allowed to escape. The Infinite wished to be mortal, but needed someone to mind the store while it was gone. Tess was determined to have the proper nature for the job.
After that Tess escaped the Academy easily, going to the City of Angels and blocking out her painful memories of that place. But eventually, she tires of the responsibility of the Infinite, and when she tires, she also remembers the Academy, and begins to feel smaller. (Since she still has the Power of the Infinite, she actually gets very small and this causes trouble until she can get her mind right again).
But the Infinite has gotten lost, and forgotten its true nature. The angelic being returns and tells her that if she ever wants to return to a human life again, she needs to find it, or she’ll have to be the Infinite for eternity. She agrees to help search, but she has mixed feelings about being a normal person again.

12 – Night Ninja by Beausephus+Son
CHARACTER NAME: Â Night Ninja
DATE OF CREATION: Summer 2011
CONCEPT: Â “He’s a ninja who uses swords. Â He’s the best sword guy in the world. Â Sometimes he uses a laser sword, but he likes his magic swords better.”

So when the mood strikes my son (and that is quite often) and he wants to make up “superguys”, “superdudes”, “supermans”… I pull out a bunch of templates I made for him and he picks out everything from the style of boots to the color scheme of the various costume options presented before him. Â I then draw quick sketch, and he edits, adds, etc… Â I then draw up the character and he hangs them in his room…if they meet his ultimate judgement. Â Then I make him come up with a story for each character.

NIGHT NINJA is another member of my kid’s superhero team-Â The Amazing Justice Squad of Superheroes. Â Like all little boys, my son loves to play “sword-fighting” with me. Â Somewhere in between watching the Last Airbender cartoon and re-runs of Silverhawks, he discovered ninjas…or as he calls them, “‘injas”.
I think in his mind a ninja is like a spy who uses swords and somehow has magic. Â So essentially that’s what NIGHT NINJA is, a spy with swords. Â Later designs of “spy” type characters have similar color schemes and costume patterns. Â There’s another character coming later called “CUTTER” who is on the super-team with NIGHT NINJA. Â As my kid puts it, “They get into sword fights, but when bad guys come in the house, they fight the bad guys and call them names.” Â It’s like a toddler version of Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes.

09_Dendara
Another character in A Jagged Road, although she won’t be relevant for a long time – until the main protagonists of Beginnings have grown up and started messing about with the politics of Pes Riami. Dendara is a powerful member of the Merchant’s Guild – a political organization on Marus Grand, the wealthy sector of the city. The Merchant Guild represents a capitalistic element of the world of AJR that didn’t exist in historical Egypt. The nobles of the city didn’t try to stick their hands into the lucrative trade market until well after a new class of laborers had cornered the market and amassed a great deal of wealth. The Merchant Guild exists to continue to keep the power and wealth the merchants of the city have accumulated over the generations separate from the hands of the nobles and the government that they control.
The Merchant Guild is by no means out to help the common man however. While social mobility is at least possible as a merchant, they are still much more equatable to a noble nouveau, and they lord their opulence and status over day laborers just as much as the blooded nobles do. Dendara is a dead ringer for the wealthy merchant upper-class, personally controlling a dozen merchant ships that sail up and down the Riami and even across the ocean to distant Avori. She’s dismissive and rude to anyone who can’t give her something that she wants, fortunately there is very little Dendara doesn’t want. Her ambition is tempered only by her patience and cold calculating intelligence.

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. So Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy… was he?

BUDDY COPS! Â WHAT AN ORIGINAL CONCEPT! (jk)
Here are a couple of characters I have been working on for a story I penned this year.  Since day one, I knew the big guy was going to be a massively hulked out Scott Caan, but I have been struggling mightily  with the little squirly guy.  I knew physically he needed to be inferior, but I did not want to appear insignificant.  The sketches before you represent a few different artistic styles and a character references I have developed.  Hope you enjoy.
#11 – Julia
Julia is a high school sophomore who was recently transferred from her old school, just like Mandy. Â She loves obstacle courses, as she likes to move around and jump a lot. Â Ever since she was 13, she wanted to build her own obstacle course after watching one too many game shows. Â Now 15, she has decided to work on one of her own courses. Â Not much progress has been made on the course, but she does use some of her free time to build it.
When that course is completed, Julia plans on forcing Mandy to attempt it, whether she likes it or not.
#12 Alphex
Alphex was inspired by the 80’s TV show The Greatest American Hero. I liked the idea of someone wearing a superhero costume and not knowing exactly what they are doing in the process.
Alphex’s real name is Jefferson Jackson. It just seems nothing ever goes right for him. he’s very frustrated by his talent of art and struggles to succeed as an artist. Not to mention living with his mother, and has not having the greatest love life.
One night he discovers a small luggage case located at a local park near where he lives, opens it, and it’s costume of some kind. Then he wears it, and it and him become one. The suit gives him powers that he uses that he doesn’t know or understand how they come about, but he shouts out a command and the suit responds almost right away, resulting in Jefferson engaging in some wacky adventures using the suit with some hilarious results. Eventually he will understand it’s use and somehow will master it.

#11: E.S.C.O.
The Electrifying Arm of the Law, E.S.C.O.
Standing for Electro . Static. Civil. Officer., E.S.C.O. is the go-to in dealing with intense meta-situations as he is one of the few super-powered beings working within the law enforcement path. Billed as an advanced android provided by Asimov Technologies, E.S.C.O. is, in fact, a human named Armando Ruiz who is endowed with electrical powers that he uses to stun his opponents while a constant static pulse field around his body repels all metallic projectiles, making him effectively bulletproof. Armando’s powers came about him at around puberty, when he accidentally caused a blackout during one of Chicago’s heatwave attacks. Though powerful, Armando sought out a practical use for his powers. First, by self teaching himself and researching all aspects of electricity and magnetism at the library, as he couldn’t use a computer without shorting it out. As he became a little more competent with his abilities, to the point of shielding himself in order to interact with technology, and was deciding on a college, he was approached by the Loman Organization to be utilized as a field agent. He spent much of college years as an Agent of Loman, until he stepped down and decided to use his abilities to serve the police force. Thanks to Loman, Armand was placed in Chicago’s S.W.A.T. division and is the starting member of the Powers Division, a unit designated to respond and engage in super-powered crime and conflicts.
With the starting of Frontline, E.S.C.O. serves as both a part-time member and as a liaison between the Chicago Police Force and the Superhuman Community. E.S.C.O. stills hides behind a mask to protect those he stands to lose most of all, his wife and newborn son.
Abilities: E.S.C.O. possesses electromagnetic and eletrostatic abilities. Capable of projecting bolts of electricity, yet possess little to no control in regards to aim; using “taser lines” housed in his gloves as focal tool in order to direct his charges. A constant electrical field around him nullifies most incoming projectiles, making him safe from bullets, knives, and metallic debris. However, energy projectiles and non-metallic objects can get past his field, while his field also disrupts most tech with his immediate vicinity. Able to make metallic objects “repel” or “attract” to one another by supercharging it with static energy. Uses this method to levitate and on a sack of ball bearings to cause confusion amongst enemies.
E.S.C.O.’s armor is harder carbon plate armor with energy channeling discs to regulate Armando’s energy flow with standard issue S.W.A.T. attire. His equipment consists of a bag of ball bearings, taser lines, metallic discs, plastic cuffs, carbon steel telescopic batons, mini antenna, and portable riot shield.
Creation: E.S.C.O. is actually based on my best friend from High School, as this was his hip hop name he gave himself amongst his circle of friends and I used his middle name for the secret identity of the character. I wanted to employ as a character and juggled the idea around since college. He went through various revisions until I stuck with utilizing aspects of a police uniform for his character design, more specifically in the S.W.A.T. attire. The helmet came from S.W.A.T. Team helmets with a modified face mask, while I based a concept sketch of Havok from X-Men to tool around with the top, as a Special Weapons And Tactics officer would use a special kind of attire to make him stand out from you conventional S.W.A.T. wardrobe.
Jessica O’ Feathers
Jessica O’ Feathers fell from the sky one day, to bust open a can o’ whupp-ass on a diligent crew of plenty. She knows how to motivate a group and push a crowd to action.
“What does it take to be legendary? You got to know it, you got to know you know it inside and out! You got to move!”
One of many of the Travelling Graces, when Jessica O’ Feathers comes around, you know you have to represent and know your business.
“Where are all my roadies at? Make some noise!”

Day 11: Xueda and Yinlin
No color today, unfortunately. Wow. Only 3 minutes until I’m a day late. Xueda and Yinlin are characters from a folk tale coming from the Hui people, which I’m currently adapting into a comic. I did their designs today.
#11 – Cassie
Cassie is quite… “gifted” in the art of fortune telling… hence giving herself the nickname at a young age. She never really considered the funny coincidence that she could only ever tell a specific type of future: predictable, mundane occurrences that, if they were odd at all, were always shrugged off as coincidences.
Cassie’s always trying to broaden and practice at her powers. Her hair has an odd habit of having two thick strands fly up like radio antennae whenever she’s tapping into her fortune ability. She always feels like she’s getting better, with more detailed, different fortunes… but, in all honesty, she just gets the same kind of fortunes as she always has; she just picks up weirder people.
Still, Cassie thinks of herself as an unappreciated superhero. She can be a bit full of herself on that, and outright denies the claims of anyone who tells her that really, her psychic abilities are just really awful.

Manny is a young manatee! He is an adventurer at heart and tends to find himself in bad situations.
Day #11 Willie Bragg

- Is a “nobody†but serves a necessary role
- Being a Jack of all trades, he is the best at what he does and quietly earns the opportunity to live on Titan
- Willie does his work dutifully, regardless of what people may say about him; “It’s my job†is his outlook
- He is an intelligent problem-solver and can fix almost anything
- When put in close contact with Thomas during the zombie outbreak, he becomes Thomas’ father-figure and his conscience of sorts
- Willie eventually finds out what sort of person Thomas is (Thomas can’t get himself to kill Willie) and struggles with calling him out or taking matters in to his own hands
The One-ster
The One-ster is one of the most diabolical and vexing members of the Alliance of Dirty Buggers. His true name long since gone, he has become know as the “One Prince of Crime” and “Hey, that ‘One’ guy!”
“1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! Nobody can understand being an individual like I can!
1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! It’s my singular focus to keep unity and single handedly befuddle the community…1! 1! 1! 1! … all those… many great unwashed masses who have non-unique identities. 1! 1! 1! 1!”
Due to his difficulty functioning in cold temperatures because of the thermal-adjustment… …accident, several years ago, The One-ster now dresses in his signature one-adorned fur hoodie and warmed his toes in specially tailored deer hide boots. Curiously, he now carries ice grenades as well, and in between maniacal laughter and numerical digits he says,
“1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! 1! Well, if they were fiery explosive grenades I wouldn’t be able to get near them either! Why not! 1! 1! 1! 1!

#12 Murph the Magnificent
Murph pretends to be an illusionist with no real powers. His turban hides what his magic fails to revitalize and his demeanor is absurd bordering insane, but as part of his deception. His face is shaven and trimmed because all of the “well known” magi have full flowing beards. He has a fondness for gaseous spells as they are less visible for his purposes.

This is my friend’s stinky old dog. I love petting his gross fur and he sleeps infront of the bathroom and doesn’t even give a shit if you push him out of the way with the door, such a cool dog.

I started drawing in this ridiculously cute style the other day and I wasn’t feeling up to drawing a whole body, so… here ya go! This is Trixie. She’s a very kind little person with a flair for making any activity fun and having hair that is simultaneously messy and perfect. Clearly a clever girl!
