Day Five – Ezekiel’s Ice Bear

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

A strange creature found by famous explorer Ezekiel Adams in the arctic regions. This six legged, horned giant is at least twice the size of it’s more common polar cousins and with a temper to match it’s size. They are completely blind and rely on their incredible sense of smell and keen hearing to track down their prey.

#5: Simoom

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

Real Name: Muthemba Bello
Age: 30
Birthplace: Kenya
Powers: Able to conjure up powerful dust storms for protection and defense

Character info: Simoom is another character whose name I came up with years ago, but never really designed until I sat down recently. Initially, I had him pegged as a hero, but as I started to draw him, he clearly had a sinister look about him and became a villain. His ability to create the dust storms are effective in disorienting and temporarily blinding his enemies, allowing him the opportunity to strike!

This is The Slicer. He’s a superhero and he has claws to slice and climb. He’s kinda like Wolverine, but not as mean sometimes.

Thanks, Xavier

Day 4: “French Vanilla”

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

“She stared up at the building with a trace of despair, a slip of paper in one hand and her purse in the other. The landlord had told her that it was a dreary building, but she was in no way prepared for the sight with which she was greeted. The paint was peeling from the window sills, the tiles were falling off the roof, and the numbers above the doors hung slightly askew.

She stepped back to the cafe on the other side of the street and ordered a coffee. As she drank, she looked at the paper she had with her. It promised an apartment with cheap rent and a street view. She didn’t really care about the rent or the state of the apartment, she just needed somewhere with her name on the letterbox. She wanted to get away from the world, away from overly curious people who cared about her and her life. Tomorrow, she would rent out another place, on the other side of town, under a completely different name.

Many people thought they knew her, but they only knew what she let them see of her. Each person came to know a different version of her. She learned to become like this out of necessity from a very young age, trusting nobody and expecting those around her to show the same level of mistrust.

She plucked a toothpick out of the canister on the table and chewed on it absent-mindedly.

She supposed that one day she would make friends again. She couldn’t live her whole life without

people, but for now she would give it a good shot.

Glancing at the clock on the wall of the cafe, she saw that she had five more minutes before she had to walk through those doors and become yet another version of herself. Hopefully, she would not have to keep this one up for long. She did not have the energy to do this much longer.

Standing up, she left her coffee untouched on the table. Carefully, she smoothed her dark blonde hair back under her hat and left the cafe.

Crossing over once again to stand front of the building, she looked at it with a different perspective. Perhaps this was indeed the wrong thing to do. No matter what though, it was necessary.

She took a deep breath and steeled herself before stepping through the doors.”

#5 – Ulysses S. Grant – Knight

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

Ulysses S Grant - Knight

To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, everything about Ulysses S. Grant could be prefixed with “badly”; as in dressed, shaven, and in need of a drink. And yet, I have to confess to a slight history crush on General Grant here. The guy had a helluva time in life; he graduated 21st in a class of 39, resigned from the army after being found drunk on duty, and went on to a slew of failures in business. However, when the Civil War began, Grant completely failed to give up. Instead, he drummed up a company of volunteers and did his duty as he saw it. By the end of the war, Grant was in command of the Union Army and managed to force the South to surrender. General Grant failed more often than he succeeded, but he managed to push through his many shortcomings and personal flaws, and managed to do the things that were most important to him. And I think that’s downright inspirational. ^^b

In RPGs, the Knight is usually the defensive party member, taking damage for other, less sturdy characters. Although occasionally seen as the holy dude in shiny silver armor, General Grant is a Knight of the old school. No paragon of moral order, this Knight is simply a warrior in service of a lord, bound to do his duty. …Though I suppose in this case Grant’s lord would be Lincoln. As if the world needs more slashfic of those two.

#5 The Blind Pilgrim

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

An orphaned half-elf, the Blind Pilgrim seems like the least of your concerns. After all, he can’t see.

But he can aim.

He takes pride in this and often starts fights with everyone. The only exception he brings to his fights is elves. He can’t fight them due to his undying loyalty to them, even though they never accepted him as an equal.

He wields two Pilcrow Axes that almost never fail to bring his opponents down. Though incredibly unfitting for an elf, he has these by his sides at all times.

Besides elves, the only remaining thing that could defeat him is his poetry recitals. He doesn’t have eyes to write, but he keeps a large amount of  memory potions of what he says at a given time. Should anyone else drink the same potions, they would be able to hear him prattle on about the joys of being an adventurer. They’re poetry’s equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

#5 – Daniel Hwang

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

Daniel Hwang. 25, Korean-Polish-American, Kenna’s brother. Daniel is a kangshinmu – a shaman in the practice of traditional Korean folk magic, Muism. If Kenna had to work for every scrap of power she has, it came naturally to Daniel. He underwent the ordination ceremony at a young age and experienced his first full possession not long after that. He’s always been more deeply spiritual than his sister, but he suffers more from insecurity as well. He doesn’t know himself as well as she does, and he doesn’t trust himself the way he needs to.  He’s less creative than she is, less adaptable, more rigid and calculating, but more sensitive as well. He also has a bitter streak of vanity he struggles to control.

#5-Sgt. Furry

“I was in the Big One, you know…that’s where I got this wooden ear. There was this time we was pinned down by the Ratzis in the desert, and fellers was dyin’ all around, cryin’ about the sand in their eyes. Our ammo was gone, and it looked like curtains-but then I heard a tiny skittering sound. Through my one good remaining ear, I made out a high-pitched squeaky scream punctuated by gunfire. Just before I blacked out from the amazement and gratitude, I witnessed an explosion of miniature fury, guns all ablazin’. He tore into the enemy position like a small fuzzy comet, and saved our bacon.”

“War is little furry hell.”

#5 – Sparkplug (the Motor Teen)

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

As mentioned in my previous posts, the first five characters I’m creating are all based on me, so, collectively, they are called, “The Vitos.” This is the last of them.

All of the Vitos had an explanation to them, a reason or trait that they were based on. For the life of me, I can’t remember what made me want to create Sparkplug. Thank goodness I saved the chat log for the conversation I had with Michelle, my wife:

Michelle: the last one is always the hardest
 your very determined / driven
me: hmmm
Michelle: how bout that?
me: it’s good
now to build a character around that
Michelle: hmmm, let me think…
they have to never give up
me: the little engine
Michelle: lol
 yep
 non-stop
me: wait
motor is another name for an engine
Michelle: yep
me: so, how about Motor Man?
 Motor Boy
 ?
 Motor Lad?
Michelle: i like man
i wanted one teenager
 like a sidekick type
Michelle: k, lad
me: Ha!
 Motor Teen

After that, I took to Twitter and asked for another name for “motor.” In my head, Motor Teen sounded too much like Motormouth or Motorhead (not that there’s anything wrong with those). Paul Montgomery (aka FuzzyTypewriter in this challenge) gave me Sparkplug. And there you have it.

Now, I haven’t really given his origin much thought. I know he’s about 16, he suffers (or is in remission) from cancer, and he never gave up hope that he would be out of the hospital, but I don’t know his name, the source of his speed powers, or anything else. So, that’s TBD.

Tomorrow, I turn the tables and give you five characters based on my wife, Michelle!

NOTE: I’m using Hero-O-Matic (aka Fabrica De Herois) to create my characters. Give it a shot!

#5 – Adam

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

This awesome dude is Adam. He’s good at what he does, which is mainly working as a bouncer (he works at a VERY cool nightclub where people rarely get in and queue for hours) and as a hairdresser (he likes this job better than being a bouncer and considers doing this job full time). Boxing is just his hobby, and he’s a very sore loser. He used to be married, but they lost their child, and split up. He hasn’t gotten over that yet, but he’s currently working up the nerve to ask the girl in the flower shop on a date.

#5- Moe the chib

An avid fan of 70’s blaxploitation films, Jean- Luc Godard and Jean Genet, Moe likes to think of himself as something of a sophisticated thug. He’s the suave counterpart to Salvatore’s recklessness, but just as cruel.

Ummm, I haven’t thought of a name for her yet!

Anyways, another character for that mahou shounen story!  She’s technically one of the adults who have magical powers, but if I explained more of her character tHAT WOULD BE KIND OF SPOILER-ISH!!! Atleast to me…

She’s a Mahou Shoujo who likes to be ladylike and elegant in everything she does, including battling.  She is also sad most of the time, but again SPOILER-ISH!!!!

I haven’t figured out her weapon yet either oops

#5 Plikitt

| November 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

Plikitt

First sighting: Three Years Ago

Alias: Unit #23906, Dittobot, The Robotic Mimic, Russ Braverton

Identity: Secret – Du Plikitt

Features: Self-contained automaton, silver skin, biothermal “skin suit” and “clothing armor”

Skills: Shape-shifting, ability to mimic any human (and superhuman) ability, ability to adapt to any situation

Dr. Tiffany Rhonne created the perfect automaton for the military, the Diode-Induced Temporal Technology Operations Bio-Organic Terminal, otherwise known as the “Dittobot”. The military ordered several units, but the template used in the creation was more advanced than she thought it would be. It was sentient, self-aware, and, in a word, human. As such, the creation demanded and got a name. He was the original Dittobot and not a duplicate. He wished to be a duplicate too, so he was named “Du Plikitt.”

The military didn’t know the Dittobots could grow sentient, and they ordered the one that did to be destroyed. Dr. Rhonne refused because she had grown to love Plikitt as a mother loved her child. When a shadowy organization sent an assassin codenamed Atomic Ice to kill Rhonne and destroy the machine, the abilities of Plikitt was exposed. He shapeshifted into Dr. Rhonne and took her place while a spare Dittobot was in a stasis. The assassin killed the disguised Rhonne and destroyed the machine. When the real Dr. Rhonne came out of hiding, she held Plikitt in her arms. They left Steel City and went to a new location where they could became a couple, Molly and Russ Braverton.

Over the years, Plikitt did heroic feats in public in his more familiar metallic form, aligning with many of the heroes of this new world. However, these actions have attracted the attention of a hunter who thought Plikitt was dead in the first place – Atomic Frost.

Plikitt: TM and (C) Jeff Harris dba Studio Lightcount.

#4 March

| November 5, 2011 | 2 Comments

March is a constant seeker. Traveling day and night on his motorbike seemingly motivated by a force that gives a strength to persist through all barriers or conditions. His purpose is unknown, but some say hes searching for his runaway love.

Artist note: Its been a long while since I’ve done a more serious character. Definitely difficult to do as it definitely broke me out of my comfort zone. This character has been brewing in my mind for a while-he’s a stereotypical bad boy-but has been softened out of meeting this one girl. I wanted small subtle signs that indicate his soft side-the plush keychain (perhaps given to him by his gf) and a puzzle piece necklace. He is every girl’s dream character-the man that’s tough and will do everything to fight for you…yet deep down a sensitive soul. Can’t help but feel so attached this character-If I have more time I would have loved to render the image better, but I actually don’t mind the rough painterly feeling and tried to keep that feeling throughout.
