#22 Vanyaa, Master of Ceremonies

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

Vanyaa • Master of Ceremonies

Vanyaa is a department all his own, which suits him very well since he prefers doing things his own way. A quick eye for treasure, he is careful to note which Paraders have not contributed something for the annual ceremonies; what they do not surrender in the dress rehearsal check, Vanyaa filches during the ceremony itself. He is one of the few who know the whereabouts of Daitenggu » and how to contact him.

The bag around his neck is a ticket collection bag. While Vanyaa may have an eye for the shiny, he is also fair. When a Parader approaches apologetically seeking to ‘exchange’ a “treasure”—a mortal love they are unable to let go of completely, a vow of revenge too heavy to drag around—he appropriates the proper change to it, similar to a clerk breaking bills.

#30 – Harold

Day 30 - Harold

Harold the neighbor

Harold is Candice’s husband and downstairs neighbor to the girls.  He is more forgiving then his wife and has a “Girls will be girls” attitude toward them.  He is friendly and kind to strangers, believing everyone has some good in them.  He gets along well with Numan (Day 18) and they will have long discussions about spirituality and philosophy.

And that’s the last one.  Other characters may show up in the story, but this is enough characters for many months of strips.  Thanks for the 30 Character challenge.  I would never have spent the time developing these characters if not for this.  See you next year.

#21 Haraiea, Rain Child

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

21 傘ちゃん

Haraiea • Rain Child

Her gigantic parasol expands like a dome outward to shield the Paraders against rain, which, for some reason, always follows Haraeia wherever she goes anyway; chalk it up to being one of the Parade’s oldest kasa-obake » !

Ages ago, Haraeia was once human in a different plane, who would trek several miles a day get to school. When bandits happened to pillage the village where the councilor of education was inspecting their outpost, she hid behind her father’s umbrella, “for what seemed like ages”. The next thing she knew Augon O’Roshy » was peering at her from beyond the parasol, coaxing her out, telling her she had been hiding “for far too long now.”

He agrees to let her keep the umbrella in exchange for a leg and an eye, and sends her off to Jeoucuré » for the mending.

#29 The World’s Most Evil & Smart Baby

| November 30, 2010 | 1 Comment

Meet Alfie, the self proclaimed most evil and smart — nay, genius! — baby in the world! His goal: nothing short of worldwide — nay, universal! — conquest!

Unfortunately, being a baby means he still has limited physical capabilities. Which he more than makes up for with his evil brilliance! See the ingenuity of his gravity defying walker! See Blargh, his right hand monster, who Alfie created with his chemistry set one morning while watching Sesame Street!

The only thing standing between this baby and his dreams, besides nap time, is The Omega Kid! So this Christmas, all Alfie wants is the source of his arch nemesis’ power: the Omega Amulet! Even if it means The World’s Most Evil & Smart Baby must take Santa Claus hostage to get it!

Wait! You say there’s no such thing as Santa? Alfie begs to differ…

#30 The Irrational Numbers

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

I guess this is more like characters 30-32, but I really wanted to nail down the design for these three. They’ll be making an appearance in the current storyline for my webcomic, and it’s always easier to design characters ahead of time.

During the occasional cross-club rumble at the Goldberg Institute for the Furtherance of Childhood Genius, the Math League usually does well.  Members of the League are about as competent at fighting as the rest of the academically focused kids at the institute, but they do have their ringers – The Irrational Numbers. Johann, Miranda and Douglas are basically human calculators — in fact, a computer has yet to be invented that can outpace them doing most calculations. Before a rumble, the rest of the league winds them up into a state of frenzy by bombarding them with series after series of nearly impossible problems. Nearly crazed at this point, the Numbers see the world as a string of equations to be solved and probabilities to be judged. You can see how this would help in a fight…

Well, that’s it for me. Check out my stuff if you like – I park my comic at duncepress.com, and it updates every Thursday. If you’re wondering what it’s about, here’s the elevator pitch: A Genre-Bending Goonies with Child Geniuses. Now I feel dirty.

#34 Coyote

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

Came up with this idea on the way to work one day. WW2 gods. Norse gods would team up with Germany. Japanese gods…obvious. Roman with Italy, so the Axis is covered…what about the Allies?

Concept: I had Merlin and the Black Knight with GB, Paladin with France, and Coyote (here) with the US. There would be others, but these were the major players.

Design: Coyote is definitely Airborne, dropping in behind enemy lines. The design skews slightly modern, but you get the idea.

I did these guys as a sample for a client (not being used) & just thought I’d post them here as a farewell and thanks. They will NOT show up in the webcomic. Most likely. If you count these guys, all the animals/pets/rides and different characters/variations of the character, my 30 characters turned into 40… buh.

This challenge has been great. I’ve met some new friends, developed a crap-ton of new storylines for the webcomic, and worked my arse off like never before. I’ll admit, the first half of the challenge was more fun. I put more into the character designs and worked hard to make them in the Shattered Myth style. The second half, I wasn’t real happy with the designs. Time constraints and a lack of knowledge on some of the gods contributed to some pedestrian, very “transformers” designs. Almost every design on here will be tweaked before any of them show up in the webcomic. I’m confident in the bios and gimmicks but not the character designs.

Overall, I feel good about what I’ve done and by creating these characters and their accompanying bios, I’ve been forced to flesh out the entire world of the Mythoscape. Next year should be a fun one for Shattered Myth.

Thanks to Tyler for putting this on. Thanks for the commenters and tweets and retweets. And special thanks to all the commenters on my site who requested their favorite gods and built my 30 characters list for me. You guys rock! It’s been fun people. I’m going to go soak my drawing hand in ice water for a week. See ya next year.

#32, #33 CT and Bea

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

Yeah, as promised, I’m going overboard. It’s all for a good reason, which I will announce on my site tonight at midnight.

Concept: CT and his niece, Bea, are two of the best metahuman hitmen in the world. That’s due, in part, to their special abilities: see, CT and Bea are not their names, but code names. “CT” is Chaos Theory; “Bea” is Butterfly Effect (BE).

Design: Hitman chic. Bea is around 18 years old, so she’s new to the business. Her uncle has been around for years. By the way, I hate white pants, but I liked the way this came out. Bea’s butterfly effect is internalized, while CT’s chaos power is externalized (with what looks like Kirby dots, natch!). Oh, I wanted to give Bea Chuck Taylor All-Stars, but HM didn’t have sneakers, so she’s wearing sandals for now.

Day 30 – Hard Core

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

Oh yeah! You're going down!

Once a quiet historian, Hard Core found a rare alien war suit in the basement storage of the metropolitan museum he worked at.  Accidentally speaking the activation code, the suit adhered to his body, its helmet ramping up the aggression centers of his brain.  Now, he’s able to construct incredible weapons of varying types from scraps of metal around him.

#30 Kung-Fu Zombies from Outer Space

| November 30, 2010 | 1 Comment

Tribute character to the old wacky ideas I used to cook up with a friend of mine. Kung-Fu Zombies from Outer Space was a campy short film idea we had that I wrote up a script for. It never really made it past that point and I thought it would be fun to visualize one of the Kung-Fu Zombies or as I refer to them, KFZ.

~Kung-Fu Zombies from Outer Space,

Know Shaolin moves but prefer your face

Kung-Fu Zombies from Outer Space,

Think ninja zombies are a huge disgrace

Kung-Fu Zombies from Outer Space,

don’t really care how your brains taste

KUNG-FU ZOMBIES!~ (Picture that being sung by the B-52s)

#30 The Master AI

The Master AI is the leader of the droids. This is its form as it would appear to other droid intelligence on the droid network. No one, not even the droids, know its true physical form.

#25 Anna “Boyhair” Boydkin

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

If you could sum up Anna Boydkin (or Boyhair to her friends for obvious reasons) in one word, it would be Emphatic.

Vegan. Feminist. Environmentalist. Pro-Choice. These are all causes Boyhair’s willing to die for. But her day job is a nurse at a blood bank. And the apathy of the people she deals with on a daily basis is really starting to urk her. When her fellow nurse made an offhanded remark about taking blood, Boyhair’s wheels started turning. They left the mall blood drive only to come back with heavy artillery & a shop vac. They’re out for blood.

Sorry, these past three have felt pretty lame. Probably my least favorite out of all of my things for this month. I started them about the second week, but kept putting them off longer & longer & I had to do them at some point so here they are. Don’t worry though, I’ve been saving some of the nicer ones to post last.

Another Blood Bank Nurse. An exchange nurse from “the old country.” There, if they can’t make their blood quota, they take it. She mentions this & plants the seed of the idea. This of course was embellishment. But she’s too cold & aloof to stop her gung ho comrades. Still her aim is quite impressive.

#30 – Shrill Ost Enforcer

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

My final character for this year’s 30 Characters challenge is the Shrill Ost Enforcer which is a new character in the world and story of Art Geek Zoo: The Way of Sound.

A celestial cousin to the Shrill Soth Ost, the Enforcer is their loyal assistant. The Enforcer is used to weaken Shrill target planets and civilizations before the Shrill move in to take over. It’s immense physicality, strength, and powers in controlling sound make the Enforcer a very tough to beat opponent.

The Enforcer was used once to attack Musica – home of the musician gholhems and mystical instruments. Ekvaren faced and fended off he/she/it and both Ekvaren and the Enforcer disappeared during the battle. The elder mystical instruments theorize they’ve become one with the universal song and it’s possible they could be brought back into physical existence by summoning them with the correct musical spell.

Number 30 disseminates information to the west coast field agents of the FBI. He specifically works in cold case and paranormal investigations.

That’s it- 30 Characters in 30 Days! Not as easy as it looks. I’ll definitely do it again next year. Follow my Twitter or visit my web page!  Now, to do something with all these characters…

#29 & 30; Weasel and; the TOAD!!!

| November 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

These two idiots have decided long ago that beating the absolute TAR out of each other on a regular basis is exactly what each of them needs to bring HIS view of what the world should be to fruition.  The outright skull bashing that these two recieve would kill a lesser man.  These two roam the world Zebra lives in.  At one time or another, they provide Zebra with actual assistance. More often than not, these buffoons show Zebra how NOT to attack his problems.  Thusly; Zebra succeeds in his goals a LOT more than either of these two dim-witted fools EVER will!
