Chad Welch Day 3 & 4: A.D.A.M. and Eve

| November 4, 2010 | 11 Comments

A.D.A.M. and Eve

I decided that since today’s “character” is technically a duo, I decided to do them together in one piece of art. This is another set of characters from the same world as my previous entries, The Shepherd and Lunatic. 🙂

Eve Stockholm is the daughter of one of the world’s greatest scientists, Rudolph Stockholm. When Eve was very young, her brother Adam was drafted into Count Braeden Graves’ army, and fought valiantly in the devastating war, paying the ultimate price. Upon seeing the broken lifeless body of his only son, Dr. Stockholm slowly drove himself insane over the years trying to find a way to bring his son back to life. Unfortunately, Dr. Stockholm’s broken heart gave way before he could realize his desire to see his son again.

However, his young daughter Eve, just as brilliant as her father, finally created a body that could host her brother’s central nervous system and a few other select essential biological organs; and with it, they relentlessly make the life of Count Braeden Graves politically miserable for starting his petty war and costing their fractured family so much.

I really played around with tone and light on this one. Tried a different technique this time around…I kinda layed down some large, broad, airbrush like strokes over the canvas, then began to erase the tone to bring out the different planes, details and textures. I thought it turned out well. I’ll play around with that technique some more in depth later. 🙂

Also! I’d like ADAM to stand for something. I’m open to some suggestions in the comments!

All that stuff up there copyright Chad Welch, blah blah blah, etc. 😉 Enjoy!

#3 General Grimm

#3 General Grimm
Noran Grimm grew up in a world ruled by logic, strategy and calculation. The planet Dethathoun was one of first planets to be conquered by the Cyber Lords after their own “Great War”. For generations the Dethathouns were shaped by the Cyber Lords to become their field generals. Their inherit skills in problem solving and tactical thinking made them the perfect solders and leaders.

Noran’s family were among the most decorated of the these Generals. Leading armies of Foot Solders in campaigns to conquer worlds across the galaxies. Norans father Jurvan Grimm lead the campaign that conquered the entire Acarien System. Making him the first and only Grand General of the Cyber Lord Army. Noran rose through the ranks of the military very quickly, becoming the youngest Dethathoun to become a Field General. His strategies in warfare were unmatched by his piers. Noran armies conquered or devastated hundreds of planets in the name of the Cyber Lords.

The Cyber Lords greed for power once again pitted them against each other and began an interstellar war. They fight for solar system territories. Like the War that destroyed their home world, they were now destroying the cosmos. As a result of the interstellar war, their resources were being depleted to quickly. Noran Grimm was sent to a remote planet named Earth with a battalion of Foot Soldiers to secure the planets rich resources. The last communique received from Grimm was a warning that the planet had defenders. With the war devastating the Cyber Lords armies no attempt has been made to find General Grimm.

#2 Isgrigg Blackhand

| November 4, 2010 | 1 Comment

World:
Isgrigg’s tale takes place in a world in the midst of a magical revolution, where magic is no longer in the hands of the elite mages, but is widespread. Sentient constructs labor in vast arcane factories, and towers climb miles into the sky, their dizzying heights supported by levitation magic. This is the world where you find Sharn, the city of towers. It is a divided city. The uppermost reaches are dizzying displays of glass and crystal, magical airships and floating ballrooms. The lower  one goes, however, the cheaper, the dirtier, and the worse life is.

Species:
Isgrigg is a Halfling, a humanoid standing about three feet tall. In the beginning, they were proud warriors, nomads of the plains. They followed the herds of dinosaurs that they hunted. But as magic and progress came along, the race divided. Those who would continue to live the same lives as they always had, and those that would instead turn to the cities, living among the other races.

Appearance:
Isgrigg stands about three feet tall. He has a lean, wiry frame, and is almost always covered in black, clinging soot from his job as a chimney cleaner. His family have been chimney sweeps for generations, their last name being a reference to the family profession. He has red hair naturally, but the soot of the years has built up, staining his hair coal-black. Despite his usual state of filth, he’s almost always smiling. When he’s working for the academy, he wears a full black bodysuit that covers everything below his nose.

Equipment:
Isgrigg, usually, carries nothing more than his sweep-broom and the clothes on his back. However, in his pocket he carries a whistle which he can use to call his companion, Corrax the soot gryph. Soot gryphs are a small species of gryphon, only slightly shorter than Isgrigg at the shoulder. His fore-half is that of a raven, while his rear is that of a panther. Corrax has been partnered with Isgrigg since he came of age.
But, when on his true job, Isgrigg carries a wide array of tools. Lock picks, flasks of acid, a few magical items… All the tools a master thief needs.

Personality:
Isgrigg is friendly and personable, as well as being surprisingly intelligent for a chimney sweep. He’s got a great many acquaintances among the lower levels of Sharn, though nobody seems to be really close to him. At the academy, he is practical and direct, saying very little.

Backstory:
Isgrigg was born to the Blackhand clan and immediately brought into their secret true profession. The Blackhands are, on the surface, chimney sweeps. Some of the best in the lower city. But the real way the clan makes money is with their second business. The blackhands are master theives. For generations, the blackhands have been stealing priceless relics, works of art, and, of course, the usual gold and jewels. They have become masters of the craft, training each successive generation everything. When they come of age, the blackhands are partnered with soot gryphs, which help them with both of their traditional jobs. The partnering has become traditional, the ceremony of acquiring the egg requires a young blackhand to sneak into an aerie of the gryphs and escape alive with the egg. Isgrigg was the first in several generations to escape the aerie without even being noticed.

Isgrigg was soon making a name for himself. The thievery became at first a game, then an art. Soon, he was performing robberies on only the rarest and most valuable artifacts and prizes. When the Morgrave university came into the possession of the fabled Shell of Deception, Isgrigg couldn’t resist. He went for it, and he messed up. The security forces of the arcane university had him under so many binding and holding spells he couldn’t even sneeze. He cursed himself all night, knowing he and Corrax were going to jail. But, when morning came, the headmistress of the academy came to him and instead of offering him up to the court, they offered him a job. A dangerous job, but one that paid well.

The academy was struggling. It was a young academy. It had neither the vast libraries of it’s competition, nor the long traditions. But they did have an advantage they could press. The academy had a surprisingly large collection of artifacts and magical items, and they intended to make use of that. Within an hour, they had affixed the unlucky thief with a magical compulsion to fulfill his agreement and he was officially the first member of the academy’s ‘Acquisitions Department’ A slightly less-than-legal branch of the college that was in charge of getting new items to add to their collections.

Desires:
Isgrigg desires the ultimate heist. He has no idea what that would be, but he’s always seeking to pull off riskier and riskier jobs. He loves the danger. His father always told him that pride was a dangerous thing for a thief. The perfect crime will drive a proud thief mad because, for it to remain the perfect crime, nobody can even know it was committed. However, Isgrigg is addicted to the thrill of the dangerous heists.

Fears:
Isgrigg fears very little, his father’s training made sure of that. However, he does fear being uncovered. If his true identity was uncovered, the Blackhands would be hunted down and the entire family would be thrown in prison.

Secret:
Isgrigg’s secret is his name. He always goes by a pseudonym at the academy, and he keeps his lives as separate as possible.

#1. Dr. Fun-Doh

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

Better late than never, right?

Dr. Fun-Doh

The most fantabulous piece of psychopathic dough you'll ever meet.

Dr. Fun-Doh was the spokes-creature for a toy fad briefly popular from the early 1990s. For two years, Fun-Doh (a creation of Stellar! Toys, a division of Astro Chemical) produced colorful and highly addictive modeling dough. When it was revealed that Fun-Doh himself was dangerously radioactive and potentially explosive, his toy empire crumbled. He still lives holed up in the old Make-A-Shape Factory and is as unstable mentally as he is molecularly.

Dr. Fun-Doh is able to secrete tubes of dough from his mouth in many colors and shapes. He is extremely sensitive to heat and baking, and he always gets stuck in the carpet.

#4; MACE

| November 4, 2010 | 4 Comments

Old man MACE. What can I say about him; crazy? Heart-broken? Highly intelligent? Permanent Metal Mace grafted onto his left hand due to an experimental accident gone awry? SHO’ NUFF!!! Mace’s son; The All-American, died in the midst of a less than heroic battle (he was stomped on by a giant Earth Elemental and crushed to death) and since then, Mace has been slipping more and more into a dark place. Eventually he righted himself just long enough to create his new “son”; the andriod version of the All-American.  This actually helped Mace to cope with the loss of his son and set him right to fight crime once again.

Philip was a professional football player. He was very successful, until one day he was injured during the game. Phillip found himself in a dark world where a Sorceress gave him a Sword and Hammer to fight for the forces of good. With Battle-Bird as his steed, he fights the dark forces to save the land he now calls home.

But, he still has the sneaking suspension that this is all a weird coma dream.

Note: This character was inspired by two things…One: obviously He-man and two: this comic I pulled out of some old boxes Superpro.

#4 Gargoyle-Man

Renchak was one among legions of gargoyles summoned to our world by the dastardly wizard “Lord Marrow”. Renchak’s fellow gargoyles were sent back to where they came from, but somehow, Renchak was missed. Finding himself stuck in our world, Renchak decided to become a costumed hero, like the people who sent his fellow gargoyles away, as it looked like a great deal of fun. Calling himself “Gargoyle-Man”, Renchak isn’t taken very seriously by the Super-Hero community, but he still tries, day after day, to earn their respect.

#3 Herbert Yamovich: Wangst Eater

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

Been a long day, so just a portrait (and also just under the wire for the day):

Among those in the know, it’s long been common knowledge that at least 15% of all high school janitors are “wangst eaters” (Vampirus Patheticus). It provides a lifestyle of abundance, and can sustain most Wangst Eaters with little to no effort.

Herbert Yamovich, however, is insatiable. He plants break-up notes in lockers, enables parental alcoholism, and isn’t above stealing the occasional bag of candy. The volatile nature of the American teenager ensures that he remains filled to bloating on negative emotional feedback. His aura is positively obese.

His only enemy is Jimmy Kiddo: the Most Well Adjusted Kid in Schoolâ„¢.

#4 Heartstrings

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

19 is a prime number.Jimmy had a rare form of Heart Cancer. Since he was a child, he went to doctor after doctor looking for somebody to help him. Nobody could.

Fed up, he went to a local mob boss, Joey Phishetti, who agreed to help him in return for 5 years of service to the mob.

His cancer was completely gone. But it was not nearly as simple as that.

His heart was now exposed, out in the open in a cavity in his chest. Not only that, but it was sewn shut with magic strings that he can control with his mind. But if he loses focus for too long, they may come undone and return his heart to a weakened state.

He has just finished his time with the mob and is ready to set of on his own on a revenge mission on the doctors who failed to heal him and robbed him of his childhood.

Stay tuned tomorrow for Joey Phishetti!

And if anyone is wondering, the answer is yes. I was listening to “My Heartstrings Come Undone” by Demon Hunter when I came up with the concept. The similarity to the song ends with the title. 😉
