#4 Fin Halloway

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

In 1968, at the age of 18 years and 1 day old, Finlay Halloway, known to everyone as Fin, enlisted in the United States Marines.  The son and grandson of Marines and veterans of war there was nothing that could stop Fin from following in those footsteps.  In no time he was through basic and tromping through the jungles of Vietnam fighting for his country.  Just five years later, then a decorated NCO, he was out of Vietnam and into a top secret special forces team known only by the code name Taipan. By 1980 he had been promoted to a Warrant Officer and was in charge of his entire company.

While on a top secret assignment with a detachment to Beirut in October of 1983, Fin was caught in the heart of a massive explosion. The official story was that it was a dual car bombing, which killed nearly 500. The truth is that the explosion was directly related to a Taipan mission and more than 2000 people, including civilians and service members, were killed including many of the men under Fin’s command.  Fully physically recovered, though still dealing with the emotional fall out of that tragic even, after over a year of recuperation and rehabilitation, Fin was reassigned within Taipan.

The US Government took interest early in the research of Dr. Henric Hannes, PhD.  It was apparent early that his solar energy conversion technology, far beyond simple solar panels installed on a roof, had the potential to change the world.  In order to ensure that Dr. Hannes’ research did not end up in the hands of an enemy nation of regime a security detail from special forces Taipan team was assigned.  That force is headed by Fin Halloway.  It is his duty to protect the uPAST campus as well as all the technology and the science team.

Before the incident in Beirut, Fin was a fun loving, energetic man who was dedicated to his friends, his job and his country.  Since his recovery he is no less dedicated to his job and country, however, he has become a much more serious and intense individual.

(side note: I’m still in the planning phase of Solar: Maximum and have, as of yet, not decided if the comic will appear in black and white or full color.  IF I decide to go full color…I think this is the style that I’ll be going with. Or…at least something similar)  (thoughts??)

#4 Ava

| November 4, 2010 | 1 Comment

The clomp-clomp-clomp sound of the battalion’s shiny black boots traveled left to right above their heads in unison, the peering sunlight slatted across their faces flickered as their shadows passed through them. They held each other, embracing tightly and holding their breath, trying desperately to exist as ghosts would — incorporeal and hidden. The thudding cadence halted.

“Check the crawlspace underneath,” barked one of the soldiers.

Ava could not help but gasp at the order. Realizing what she had done, she caught herself and buried her face into Alistair’s shoulder. She could feel the prickle of his day-old stubble on her cheek. She could smell his skin. Her grip on his hand tightened turning it white above the knuckle. She thought back to her mother and the Sundays they would spend baking pastries and cakes for her father and brothers who were out for the day on a hunt. They would return with a pheasant or a rabbit, and she and her mother would roast it with mushrooms and apples. Afterwards they would partake in dessert and her father would comment how Ava was a marvelous baker, a wonderful daughter.

clomp-clomp-clomp

The footsteps stopped directly above Ava and Alistair. Ava retreated even further into Alistair’s arms, if even possible. Alistair looked up through the slit spaces between the dull brown floorboards. Bits of debris and dust tumbled down through the cracks and Alistair used his sleeve to rub them out. Blinking several times to reset his focus and moisten his eyes once more, Alistair looked back up at the soldier, who was now looking directly back at him.

“Here, sir! The boy is here!” The soldier shouted, eager to please his superior.

“Pry them out.” The voice was deep and stern, not unlike Ava’s father’s.

Alistair put his hands on either side of Ava’s face, and directed it at his. He could see her eyes glassed over with frightened tears, darting back and forth to each of his own. Her lip trembled, her delicate and fair eyebrows were arched both upward and inward, desperately seeking hope. He swallowed down his fear and noted how soft her cheeks were against his fingertips.

“I love you, my Ava.” His words were frantic and hurried. “Our passion is my energy, your being my vindication.”

A crowbar penetrated the floor with a clang, prying up a splintering board just behind Ava.

“Do you remember the first night we met? Do you remember? Beneath the sprawling oak tree on my father’s land.” Unfeeling black boots were suddenly in Alistair’s view as the soldier stomped clear a hole in the only barrier between he and they. Ava blinked once, a salty bead somberly traveled down her cheek.

“I was a man whole, that day. I had never known true joy until I had known you, Ava.” Alistair’s pulse had quickened and muscles tensed.

“I love you, Alistair.” Whispered Ava with what little breath she had left to give.

“My love for you is undying Av-” Alistair’s words were interrupted by a resonant bang!and a flash of light.

The crimson line slowly drew itself over Alistair’s brow and down the front of his nose, drip-dripping at the tip. Pat-patting onto the dust below. Ava’s jaw hung in disbelief, her breaths short and involuntary.

A large gloved hand came down onto Ava’s shoulder and clenched it tight. Instinctively, she whipped her head toward it.

“My queen, the king will be pleased to hear you are safe once again.”

30 Characters Challenger: Ian Struckhoff (Black Label Comics)

Cover to The Deathlings #1, by Reuben Negron

Before I start posting my entries, I wanted to get in a quick introduction, to explain how I’m doing things. (Apologies for this coming midstream, as it were.)

As a writer, I always have to rely on talented artists to bring my characters to life. It’s no different during the 30 Characters challenge. All of the characters I’ll be posting are created by yours truly, and designed and illustrated by some of my artist collaborators and friends. Together, we’ve created the titles under my Black Label Comics imprint, including series The Deathlings, Huginn & Muninn, and The Dark Age, plus the anthology Black Label Comics.

Now back to the Characters– including, shortly, some from me and my friends.

#4 Mia Glazel

| November 4, 2010 | 1 Comment

Mia Estelle Glazel (1898 – 1984) was a major figure in the early history of newspaper comic strips, best know for her comics Life in America and Politics of the Porcine.

She started her career as an assistant to Bud Fisher on the strip Mutt and Jeff, but was quickly hired away by Randolph Hearst as a slap in the face to Fisher after he moved his strip away from King Features. Hearst was quick to recognize Glazel’s enormous talent, and she soon had a strip of her own – Life in America (1923-1930). Hearst forced her to publish it under a male pseudonym (Montrose Mountebank) so that the work would be taken more seriously. It was a very popular strip among the intelligentsia of the time, as its story of two hobos and their experiences in the impoverished underbelly of affluent 1920’s America was not a viewpoint often explored at the time.

Eventually, she chafed under the anonymity of her male pseudonym, and broke from Hearst to form her own syndicate and publish her magnum opus – Politics of the Porcine (1931-1937). Porcine was a scathing re-telling of human history, only transported to a surreal, planet sized pig-sty and told through a cast of nameless, archetypal pig characters. It was a platform for Glazel’s wicked intelligence and monumental understanding of human nature.

It was a phenomenal success, but after 6 years Mia pulled the plug on the strip, suspecting that the public love-affair with her work had more to do with cute pigs than it did with the content of the strip. Shortly after, she left America for France, where she pursued her voracious appetites for both alcohol and younger men. Although she married 7 times in her life (four times to the same man), in 1984 Mia died alone in her Paris apartment. She herself had been quoted many times saying that the only love she ever gave unconditionally was to her own creations, and after that she had nothing left to give. One would also suspect that her towering intellect kept intimacy far away.

Day 4: Frostbite

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

I realise the name Frost Bite has been used, several times, but I couldn’t think of anything better to call my ice vampire.   She’s ugly and cold.  She doesn’t suck your blood, but when she bites you, she freezes it.  Here she is preparing for take off.  She has to take a running start and jump.  What’s that you ask, why doesn’t she just fly?  Because she’s a moron, that’s why.  She’s was given blue skin and fangs, but she’s got peanut butter for brains.

#4 Arcanus Tem

| November 4, 2010 | 7 Comments

A master of the arcane, Julius Tem was from a family of the sorcerous- the talent was strong in the bloodline.

So strong and so focused was he, in fact, that as Julius entered his seventy-second year of study he failed to notice even the cardiac arrest that stole his life.

As time passes and gradually his condition became clear to him, Julius began to rationalize and reason the event more and more , to the point that he can now pursue his studies unhampered by morals, compassion…or humanity.

#4 Ensign Casey Anders

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

Casey, as she’s known to her closest friends, is the brawn of the team.  She’s more of a “shoot first, ask questions later (if ever)” kind of girl, much to the chagrin of the resident science officer and to the slight annoyance of others.  Personality-wise, Casey plays as hard as she works, drinking, dancing into the wee hours, and even getting into the occasional fist fight. However, in any fight, there’s no one better to have on your side.

#2 – Unit 404

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

There’s really no easy way to put this – Unit 404 is perhaps a little insane.  It might have been that last upgrade, or the time his inventor tried to install Linux on him.  It could be that, in an effort to save costs, instead of licensing Asimov’s 3 Rules of Robotics his creator used a shareware copy of “13 General Suggestions of Robotics”.  It could just be that he was never really right from the start menu.

See, Unit 404 was designed to recycle wasted fluids, and additionally was created to use the materials he is recycling for fuel to keep him going.  Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, he determined that humans waste an awful lot of blood.  I’m not 100% sure how a vampire robot would work, but that’s not about to stop Unit 404 from getting his drink on.

Hi all.
I’m posting an illustration of Gometh and Lilly. No story or background this time.

#4 Guardian Angel Armiga

| November 4, 2010 | 3 Comments

Just a quick drawing cause I’m in a hurry…

This is quite personal and usually I don’t draw angels

Her name is Armiga which is latin and means “shield bearer”. I’ve drawn her for the pupils at my former school because during the last four years, every year a pupil died. Two were hit by a train, one died because of cancer and these days a girl was hit by a truck.

Armiga has two pairs of wings so she is quite fast and with her ears she can hear secret wishes of the pupils.  Her dress is orange bcause this is the color of my former school . I had some problems to scan her, because I’ve drawn her at aquarellpaper, so I’m sorry about the scanning edges

I just wanted to draw someone like her. Maybe it helps, no one knows

See you tomorrow

#4 Azure Jean

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

The Sisters of the Stitch were terrified of Gregory. Never before had another soul been able to push it’s way back into a body, especially a body patch-worked together from several other bodies. Fearing he was in league with those seeking to tip the balance they setup a trap. Taking a page from your favorite B-Movies they created the bride for this Frankenstein Monster. What they never expected though was another soul with the same ability.

Azure Jean woke up in a morgue staring down at her dead body. A most unsettling event for sure, her new form wasn’t exactly what she was used to, but it would do. In the ether she lingered watching the Sisters stitch the living flesh together, a voice told her to grab hold of the last thread and ride the needle. The next thing she heard was screams as the Sisters fled and she sat up. Azure Jean can see things, foggy glimpses of the yet to be or might have beens.

Gregory showed up only moments later, his face smile uncharacteristically wide. The trap had worked, but who’s trap was it now?

Azure Jean is part of the Stitchwork Universe, a story I started to develop during last year’s challenge. This story went on to win cover feature of the Mysterious Vision’s anthology over at Small Press Idol with the help of my collaborator Silvina Rinaldi and editor Amanda Orneck. For more details stop by and check it out.

Magdalene

Mary Magdalene is the key to how the future will turn out… if successful the wars and endless battle for supremacy will; be done, if she fails slavery or total obliteration will await us. As she guides Sir Geoffrey de Belair in the time stream to stay ahead of the pure evil that wishes to engulf the planet in the guise of Gaston de Monfort, can she save herself from the maelstrom that is coming.

#4 – Max the Bartender

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

In the middle of no where, miles from anything, there’s a lousy little hotel with a lousy little hotel bar. It’s open from 2pm to 2am every day, and everyday Max is there. Max has always been there.

He’s friendly and a good bartender, but most interesting… Max knows things. Max knows a lot of things. Whether he’s psychic, or omniscient, or divinely inspired, nobody knows, but he’s a good person to have on your side when you’re running from demons or trying to save the world.

#4 Steve Griffith

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

From Lilly’s Blog

Writing a profile piece of my former boss, Steven Griffith, editor-in-chief of the Ephton Daily, is probably not the most professional thing I could do. And I would not blame you for questioning my credibility on this one. But the thing is, I really like Steve. He is a smart man. Arguably the smartest man I’ve met since coming back to town, even. And he’s a hell of a journalist. Under other circumstances I could have learned a lot from him. Unfortunately, Steve is practical to a fault. Or more precisely, practical at the expense of integrity. And really cynical.

When Blake Lewis rolled back into town, one of the first things he bought was the Ephton Daily. He claims to be hands off, allowing the paper to proceed uninterrupted by him, remaining  under Steve’s control. To the best of my knowledge, Steve is completely honest when he says Lewis does not check in on him nor otherwise direct the content. But that’s only because Lewis knows that Steve understands the deal: publish the kind of stories Lewis wants and the paper is free to operate as it always has. Like I said, Steve is smart. Lewis never had to tell him outright, Steve just got it. And Steve wants to cover his ass because he really likes the steady paycheck and the stability it affords him. News and honesty be damned.

I wish I could say this was hearsay or wild conjecture on my part. I also kind of hate talking about this in public. But, sorry Steve, I still believe in reporting the truth.

One night, shortly before I quit, we were all out for drinks. One by one the rest of the staff called it a night. Finally only Steve and I were left pounding back shots of Jack and drinking Buds (a girl develops a hell of a tolerance in this line of work, also I was raised in a restaurant, people). In a moment of shocking honesty, Steve looked up from his beer and stared into my eyes. “Why the hell are you here, kid? You are way too smart to write for these hicks. All they want are fluff pieces and gossip.” I explained to him that I still believed in this town, despite the cynicism it seems to have fallen prey to. “You mean Blake fucking Lewis,” he said. I did but I wasn’t drunk enough to play all my cards just yet. “I knew that asshole was bad news when he came back. I got some dirt on him, you know.” Well, that perked my interest. I wasn’t sure what to say but luckily Steve just continued talking: “The thing is, this jackass has raised my paycheck significantly since he bought the paper. I make more money playing his game than I would writing a real goddamn article. Actually, I would make no money writing a real goddamn article in this shit hole.”

I threw back another shot. “What about the truth?” I asked. He threw back his own shot. Steve thought about it for a second. Or maybe he was just holding back a burp. I don’t know. Finally he looked at me again. “I live in a hick town with one newspaper. Fuck the truth, I need to get paid. Go somewhere else if you actually want to be a reporter.”

#4 Jugular

| November 4, 2010 | 4 Comments

Bonsoir, Messieurs et Mesdames.  What you are about to see, what you paid in sanguine coin to experience, is at hand.  Behold the pallid purveyor of pantomime!  Quiet drinker of the crimson ichor!  Europe’s most renowned undead!  The Mime Jugular!  Once the most celebrated voice of humanity!  A singer unparalleled,  the young master forfeited his gift for the immortality of a jealous admirer.  The very folds of his vox pulled from their box on the fangs of a leeching count in wont of the melodic organs for himself!  So, hear now, admirers of the exquisite, the song of silence!  Observe the music of movement!  Feel the eloquence of impression!  Give freely of your lifeblood so that the eternal performance never ends!

#4 Zoain the Songstress

| November 4, 2010 | 2 Comments

Name: Zoain the Songstress
Species: Werewolf
Age/Sex/Race: 17/Female/N/A
Main Goal: Find a new home and family.
Occupation: Songstress/storyteller
Motivation: Grief, anger
Inner Need: Family and companionship
Flaw: Too reactionary, too gregarious
Good/Bad Habits: Religiously maintains her posessions and her own appearance.
Skills, Knowledge, Props: An excellent singer and player of the athnilute, as well as a very skilled hunter. Very stealthy.
Quirks: Very protective of her prized athnilute. Will go to great lengths to ensure its safety.
Attitude: Optimistic
Dialogue Style: Very fast and loose grammar, plenty of double-negatives.
Backstory/Description: Zoain was the daughter of Ranoan, the alpha-male of a werewolf tribe. She served as the tribal story-teller and entertained her fellow wolves with her singing and playing of the athnilute (a made up two-stringed instrument). Her life was relatively simple until her father was challenged and slain by an outsider, Zonande. Zonande became the new alpha and took Ranoan’s mate as his own, as is the natural course of werewolf politics. Zoain, however, was overcome with grief at the death of her father and could not bring herself to accept the rule of the man who killed him. The very night that Zonande slew her father she ran away to find a new home.

…and then she met Jeffery and they teamed up to travel the world fighting monsters and shit and fell in love and had three kids somehow! Yes, number #4 lives in the same ‘verse as #3 (right here -> http://www.30characters.com/2010/11/03/3-jeffery-caldwell/), and I originally conceived them as teaming up as an unlikely duo. Just to clarify a few things: werewolves in this setting are fixed in the anthropoid form, this picture takes place in the Custwood, and the athnilute is a two-stringed instrument I made up. Also, I’m up to my neck in projects these days, so the next couple of characters might be late. I’ll do some catching up/getting ahead this weekend.

#04 Marge Hickaby

Suck it in, girl.

Not a lot of the performers like Marge’s abrupt attitude when it comes to dressing and costuming, but she’s known to work fitting miracles and has never had a performer late to stage on account of wardrobe.

Rumor has it, one of the chorus line girls split an embarrassing seam running along her… lower-lower back *cough* and Marge mended it from behind the stage curtain in 1 minute 27 seconds flat before the girl had to show her back side to the audience during the dance.

She’s just that good.

#4 The Phantom Shadow

| November 4, 2010 | 4 Comments

Yeah, this one is silly. But probably no sillier than anything else I’ve come up with as an inside joke.

This idea came from looking at one of the back issue cases at Jim Hanley’s Universe and seeing an issue of The Phantom next to an issue of The Shadow and blurring the words together.

Concept: While I’d love to do this as a straight pulp from the 30’s and set it then, I really want to push the expectations of pulp, and set it today, like Brubaker & Phillips’ Incognito.

Design: I’m going to keep some pulp tropes; the hat, the mask, and, like his namesake, a scarf, but what we’re looking at…what my intent is…is a hipster as a pulp hero. Tight v-neck sweater, black jeans, Converse All-Stars, black leather gloves and a fedora. Domino mask combined with the shadow of his hat combine to obscure his eyes entirely. The scarf is an odd-ball element. I wanted something that emulated a cape, but had that element of pulp mystery. I like the idea of his sweater and scarf being somewhat malleable after a fashion. What I mean is, the sweater won’t always be black, but gray, navy, crimson or forest green…dark colors. Likewise, the scarf will always be dark, but could have patterns. Theoretically, I’m pushing the idea of shape as costume, where his silhouette would play a role as identifier.

Note: My limitations as an artist are really starting to come to the surface. This one took four tries before I saw the character in what I was drawing, and I’m still not 100% happy with it. Furthermore, he should be wearing a black raincoat (not a trenchcoat), but again, I have limits to what my pen can represent on a page.

EDIT: Now with art by my bud, Attila Adorjany!  See above!

Spivy…

Not much I can say about that scalliwag that wouldn’t leave an awful taste in my mouth.  But here’s what you need to know:

He’s the bark to Skunk, his partner in crime’s bite.  He’d be the brains (if you can call them that) of their two man outfit.  If you see him, walk the other way.

Spivy is a character who will soon be making an appearance in Tears of the Dragon, my fantasy webcomic.  Koko Amboro does a great job with character designs and will probably give Spivy a nice makeover, but I wanted to give him something to work with.

#4 – Nevermind

| November 4, 2010 | 3 Comments

Douglas Carlin had it all.

In Highschool, he became an athlete at the peak of human fortitude, excelling in boxing, wrestling and football as linebacker.

His IQ developed beyond the scale of common tests, through intense training, meditation and self-disciplining. In the opinion of his classmates, he bordered a demigod.

Then he crossed the border. When trying to push his mind beyond the limit of human comprehension, suddenly something snapped in his brain and unlocked access to a cerebral area that enabled Doug to transcend his own mind an enter that of others. He became a telepath, capable of planting words in the mind of others, and reading surface thoughts (those you form before speaking).

He grew obsessed with this newfound power,  tossing aside all other accomplishments, and became a psychologist, achieving his doctorate by the age of 24.

He grew discontent when he realised that there was a definite limit to his power. He could influence people, even control their actions, whenever they were in an impaired state of mind (sleep-depraved, sleepwalking, suffering from any form of mental illness), but could not break another person’s will.

He eventually contended with helping mentally ill people recover, but a certain degree of frustration remained.

Years later, Blindsight offers him a chance to make a real difference in the world as a hero, joining his team in order to help another hero, and as communication beacon between the team’s members.

Dubbed “Nevermind” by his teammates, this mountain of a man is one of the central posts for the team, until he later on persues his professional career again.

#3 – Simulacrum

| November 4, 2010 | 0 Comments

Sometimes I hate my job. I wasn’t able to upload this character yesterday due to pressing deadlines. So today, there’s two updates.

Thanks a lot to Vito Delsante for helping me find a name for this hero!

Meet Samuel “Sammy” LaCroix, a.k.a. Simulacrum, third and final “core” member of the team to be known as the “Marginal Men”.

Samuels powers manifested early, when he gave his parents the shock of their lives by apparently vanishing from his crib, leaving behind nothing but his teddy bear. His father, renowned physicist Dr. Herb LaCroix – one of the keenest minds on Earth – quickliy noticed something odd: firstly, the teddy was already lying outside of the crib, and there was a facsimile in the crib. Secondly, the teddy inside the crib left an imprint in the sheets, it was far too heavy to be a toy pet.

Lifting the teddybear out of the crib, Dr. LaCroix ran a few tests and discovered that the bear was formed out of highly condensed organic molecules, mimicking the plush of the teddy. The copy reverted back to baby Samuel after 8 hours, 47 minutes and 6 seconds. His parents were glad to have their son back and decided to investigate the incident further without consulting a doctor, because Sammy seemed to be just as well as before his change.

Years of testing showed the full extent of Sammy’s power, and gave him a measure of control over it. Apparently Sammy’s DNA had been affected by some sort of radiation and could now generate a morphing field around Samuel’s cells.

After years of prctice, Sammy could assume the form of any inanimate object, invariably keeping his full mass, and invariably returning to his original state after 8 hours, 47 minutes and 6 seconds, during which he has no consciousness at all. Like a memory metal, he returns to the exact state he was in before his change. If, for instance, the 140 pound teddybear (this is approximately the mass of the grown-up Samuel) was torn to pieces, the molecules will reform after 8 hours, 47 minutes, 6 seconds, leaving not trace of the attack on Samuel.

Dr. LaCroix spent the families fortune on the production of several sets of clothes generated from Samuel’s DNA so that the clothing could change along with Samuel, in order to support him in living a life adequate to his potential.

Sammy always had the full support of his family, and eventually the entire family clan was let in on his secret. The family moved back to Louisiana, where the family had its origins, mostly for financial reasons and to help Sammy remain undetected by having him grow up on the coutryside.

Sammy decided in his early teens to become an unsung hero, surreptitiously aiding people in need, for instance turning into a ladder to help children get out of a well. Rumors spread about an invisible superhero, for little did people know that there WAS no-one to place the ladder, but the ladder itself was the hero.

Sammy grew obsessed with aging, and uses his power to fight against time and death itself, mostly by sleeping only every three to five days, spending the night changed into a lifesized puppet of himself, thus saving time. However, because of this he is very unfit, always tired and looking pale and ill.

One day, Blindsight managed to locate Sammy by following rumors on the invisible hero, and offered him a place on his team. Sammy reluctantly joined in, his main reason being a search for profit, in order to restore his family’s fortune, which he felt was wasted on him.

Assuming the name Simulacrum, Sammy joined the team mainly as an infiltration expert. Sammy cannot wear a costume. He has only three sets of his special clothing left, changing them into solid blocks of diamond every 8 hours 47 minutes 6 seconds, whenever he’s not wearing one.

In order to keep the nature of his power a secret, he made up a cover story about blending in with the crowd, appearing as a civilian to deceive criminals.

Samuel is a very brooding type in the beginning, owing also to his constant fatigue. He can be very rash in his emotions, especially to fits of rage, out of his frustration for being practically useless on his own.

This changes with the development of new team strategies over the course of time.

Simulacrums favourite moves include grabbing somebody by the wrists and then turning into 140 pound handcuffs, or hurling himself at somebody and changing into an array of weapons, from bowie knives to webs.

Since the mass remains constant, the density of the reproduced object can greatly vary. If Simulacrum changes into an aspirin, it would be harder than diamond. If he changed into a car, it would not withstand an impact with common flies.

Samuel has amassed a vast common knowledge, in order to most accurately imitate anything from Chippendale chairs to Ming vases. This makes him very inventive, and also a good strategist for the team.

He is also destined to be the last of the “Marginal Men”.
