Some funky sci-fi for the people!

I wanted to do something along the lines of Aeon Flux- hence the thong. I was stuck for a gimmick though, so I flipped through Wikipedia until some sort of animal turned up, which was a snail. So I ran with that. I did the background and rough pencils in Photoshop, but I did everything else in Illustrator. I added the Shavian script for some additional sci-fi flair. I hope you like it!

#1 – The White Mask

| November 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

In a world wrapped in darkness and fear, the only thing worse than the ebony touch of night is that of The White Mask.  Glowing softly, as if bathed in moonlight, his form is merely the tip of a much worse entity protruding into this world from somewhere far worse.

#1 Wilby & Seabiscuit

Wilby is an out-of-place young Englishman. Naive and good-nature, he isn’t always the smartest one around. Packing nothing but an irresistible smile and his trusty steed, Seabiscuit, he travels the Wild West in search a good cup of tea.

#1 Foot Soldier of the Cyber Lords

The Cyber Lords are a technological advanced species that destroyed their home planet in a “The Great War”. During the war they would take inhabitants from other planets to be their Foot Soldiers. Using wormhole technology allowed them to travel through time and space to gather their armies.

They would modify their new soldiers by wiping their minds and reprogramming them. These new mindless beings would be outfitted with specialized cybernetic enhancements. Giving them great speed, strength and agility. Their main weapon on the battle fields was an energy staff capable of leveling buildings. In the height of the war each Cyber Lord had billions of Foot Solders.

Seeing their world destroyed by the war the surviving Cyber Lords made a truce. They agreed to leave the planet and use their wormhole technology to travel the universe and start their own individual societies. Using their vast armies of Foot Soldiers the Cyber Lords traveled the cosmos and began conquering worlds.

Chad Welch #2 – Lunatic

Aron Kur - Lunatic

Meet Aron Kur, a depraved murderer and rapist on his home world of Nokima.  When one of Nokimia’s three moons tore itself apart in the world’s upper atmosphere, a devastating rain of mystical meteors peppered the planet.  The result was a paradise for Aron Kur as an epidemic of Lycanthopy spread throughout the world, bringing with it all the chaos, death and destruction that Kur craved.

One of the last Nokimians left alive after the fall of the third moon, Kur was captured and isolated in Tartarus under the codename Lunatic, and is a favorite puppet of The Shepherd.  Aron Kur; murderer, rapist, werewolf…prisoner of The Shepherd and the Pallor Knights, currently serving life without the possibility of parole.

This was my attempt to do a sci-fi/fantasy spin on a horror classic, the werewolf. Probably not as successful as it could be, but I like the general idea and would like to develop him further in the future. But for the purposes of the challenge, I’m calling him done. 🙂

Day 2: Carl The Clamorous Politician

| November 2, 2010 | 2 Comments

I thought Carl was appropriate for day 2, since it is U.S. Midterm Election Day!  Carl is an ambiguous politician, meaning he represents the worst of all parties.  He’s the ugly face of American politics.

#1 Keeper of the Keys

| November 2, 2010 | 11 Comments

The Keeper of the Keys–I decided to take this challenge as a way to start drawing out all of my character ideas for my someday-to-be comic, Point Blank. The story revolves around Adela, a girl in search of her missing father in the unforgiving wastelands of the Azubah Valley, and her encounter with the mysterious Mithrandir (or Randi for short), an Immortal.

In the Azubah Valley, there are legends circulating about Immortals, people who have made deals with the mysterious man known as the Keeper of the Keys (KOTK) in order to obtain eternal life. To do so, it is said they must trade a part of which binds them to their mortal state thus making them immortal, but what they have given up is never quite what they expect it to be. Immortality comes at a high price… Of course they want KOTK to reverse the effects, but he vanishes as soon as the damage has been done, and he leaves with whatever is taken. His motives and current whereabouts are unknown.

#1 Daitenggu

| November 2, 2010 | 4 Comments

大天狗 • The Dread Flutist

Secluded in his drifting mountain, the Daitenggu only comes down for the Grand Parade » Without his music, the portals cannot be coaxed open, the Demons of selected humans will not awaken, and no parade takes place. He is often consulted by the organizers (a handful who know how to contact him in other days of the year) to choose from promising ‘seeds’. He has “blind” eyes, but all of his wing feathers sprout eyes when he starts to play his flute. When an eye opens, a demon seed has been awakened and finds a way to join the Parade.

The people who hear his music shed their human skin and start their Walk. Some do it slowly, thus ‘dying’ slowly, and others drop their skins right then and there.

The Daitenggu’s dread form is a bird with wings that “encompass all four hemispheres.”

NOTES: I’m so thankful this has been a long holiday! I might be a bit late on others as things depend on whether or not I have scanner access, but I keep a Tumblr blog for this project:

I haven’t had the chance to introduce myself, but hello, I’m Kae, ‘kannibal’ on Tumblr, and I’m on here basically because this sounds like an interesting challenge. 🙂

#2 The All-American

| November 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

Realizing this must be an East Coast contest after I posted my 1st entry at 11pm Oregon time, it was already day 2 for you other contest goers. I hope I’m not disqualified or anything.  Either way, here’s a second post to make up for the bumble on my end. Enjoy!

Super Hero Andriod built by his father, the aged Super Hero; Mace.  The original All-American was killed (crushed underfoot by a giant Earth elemental) in battle.  Mace, the grieving father, was so emotionally destroyed that he went the distance and entered the annals of insanity by using his genius with technology and engineering to create this new “son”.

Will edit this tomorrow with an actual scan, as my scanner’s out. EDITED.

#1 Ra, Goddess of the Sun

| November 2, 2010 | 4 Comments

Ra. She believes she is the reincarnated ancient Egyptian God come to spread his grace for modern day man.  Not only does she have slight gender issues, she’s incredibly deadly.  She harness’ the powers of gravity which she mistakes for powers from the Sun.  Her gravatronic powers enable her to fly and create all sorts of mayhem.

DAY 1 – “Minerva Williams”

| November 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

It’s still November first in California, and so this is still Day 1 (We are going to tactfully ignore the fact that I don’t live anywhere near the Pacific Coast).

Minerva was inspired by a lady standing in front of me earlier today at the DPS: She had very curly hair that was tightly bunched up in something that was like an afro but wasn’t, and many of of the curls were highlighted, making for a really cool effect. I don’t think I quite managed to portray that in this sketch, though…

But a quick bio of Minerva that I came up with off the top of my head: She grew up in a fairly affluent military family and had always known that she would end up in some career that would make her mother sit awake at night worrying. After moving a few too many times, Minerva opted out of a West Point education for a more settled career as a cop. Over the years, she’s established herself as one of the city’s best, a tough-as-nails woman in a male-dominated field.

#1 Wea’shei Yest’ehahst’nye “She Walks From The Fire”

| November 2, 2010 | 5 Comments

My First 30 Submission“Wea… She Walks From The Fire” Born of flame and prophecised to be the bringer of destruction and rebirth. However, in the vain of “War” from the Darksiders storyline. Wea’s purpose was mistaken when a false prophet called for her return to aid in the conquest of several surrounding civilizations. Her subjects disturbed to find that Wea’s chosen form was to that of a woman, as with many early civilizations her status as a female was seen as betrayal and ultimately the foremost supernatural gladiators under the oppression of (the yet untitled) masters of the dominant civilization were commanded to destroy Wea and bring to the kings her heart split into five equal pieces.

Yeah, straight from the stereotypes of Native America… NO! No historical, traditional or sensationalized stereotype here. Wea, completely made up with ZERO significance to any tribal affiliation in the U.S., or any aboriginal group belonging to their respective continents.

I’m registered with the Navajo Tribe here in the U.S. and with the likes of Avatar, Dances with Wolves, Little Big Man and The Indian In The Cupboard… I feel it’s time a real contribution was made on behalf of some true indigenous blood.

#2 Shadow Fox

| November 2, 2010 | 6 Comments

Shadow Fox was a super-hero in his prime back during “The Great War”. We now find him in the ’70’s, refusing to give up his Super-Hero activities despite his lack of powers and advanced age. He still manages to do his part in the Super-Hero community, as he still has his razor sharp intellect, and amazing gadgets.

#2 The Warriors

| November 2, 2010 | 6 Comments

(This is a script I found recently in my records…I have never draw these characters before but they have been bopping around my brain for over 10 years. Does anyone have a better name for the group… I am taking suggestions, I don’t want to use the warriors.)

PAGE 1
a.  (Est. Shot) Shot of a beautiful land, Mountains on the horizon to vast meadows of tall grass.

b.  (Full) Monumental rocks dot the plain with unusual, almost human shapes. Set between the rocks lays a meandering path. It is getting dark the shadows are long in the remaining daylight.

c.   (medium) We see four figures silhouetted against the beautiful setting.
“You know this is a trap.” Explained Munashi sarcastically.
“Yeah, I just assumed everybody knew it was?” quipped Iori.

Page 2-3
a.  (Large silhouettes) An army of ghouls stepped out of the shadows of the rocks.
“See,” Iori sarcastically. “Let’s do this!”

b. (Full bottom of 2 pages) Action of the team kicking ass. (Background) Yasu rushes the army of ghouls with his staff and knocks a fat ghoul to the next county. Iori dodges huge bolder thown by a big ghouls  (Iori is jumping over the bolder with his fists glowing) Munashi holds a smaller ghoul in his hands infecting it with his stone worms, as Miniko launches swords drawn into action.

#2 Theo the Vampire

| November 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

In his spare time he teaches children how to count.Theo was a seminary student when he was preyed upon by a particularly vicious vampire. Despite joining the ranks of the undead, he stayed devoted to the Lord and rather than feeding upon humans, instead turned wine into the Blood of Christ to sustain himself.

Despite the massive pain it causes, Theo still wears the Cross of his Lord upon his chest as a symbol of his devotion.

#1 Johann

| November 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

Johonn is a collector, buyer and seller of odd and legendary artifacts. Looking for a brugott’s kidney stone? He’s probably got 3 in the back of his store. The rope that hoisted the main sail on the Crimson Coccyx? Half off until Thursday. Sword hilts made from the fingerbones of the ancient clay warriors of the ancient Southern Sun kingdom? buy 4, get the 5th for free.

He’s probably had every mystical item pass through his bargain bins, and he can recite the history of each one off the cuff if you’d just ask. However, there’s this box… Some guy traded it to him for an armful of maps, but it didn’t come with a key. And this craftsmanship, well… it seems familiar, but new and unique all at the same time…

“Mikhail, lemme tell ya… magic items are all over the place. Heck, you can probably throw a stone in Auburnwood Forest and hit at least 3 things that someone will say are mysterious and ethereal. But just because a basilisk’s scrotum is rare don’t necessarily mean it’s any good.”

#1 – The Shepherd

| November 2, 2010 | 4 Comments

Meet The Shepherd. With the gift of The Praxis, a wide array of psionic abilities from Telekinesis to Mind Manipulation, The Shepherd is a key component of an ancient secret society known as The Pallor Knights.  The Order of the Pallor Knights are the guards and administrators of Tartarus, a prison with no walls, where the monstrous and inhuman inmates are held by a force of will unlike no other.

Using Praxis, The Shepherd takes control of any of the beasts that reside in Tartarus, and uses them to protect those that these monsters previously harmed, to right their own wrongs as they serve their penance.  The beasts and monsters of our nightmares are mere sheep to The Shepherd, as he with but a thought commands their every move.

Best.  Prison.  Ever.

All that stuff Copyright me, or whatever.  🙂

#1 – The Bearded Menace

| November 2, 2010 | 3 Comments

The Bearded MenaceFigured I’d get this guy out of the way.  The Bearded Menace spawned from the name of my portfolio site (http://www.beardedmenace.com), and when I first dreamed him up, he was to be more or less the mascot for the whole operation.  I eventually went a different route, and little Menace here took a seat on the back burner for a while.  But, here he is now, in a finalized state!  I’m still debating his main color, I guess, but brown will do fine for now.

As a creature, The Bearded Menace is a grumpy, quiet type.  His past times include loafing about and gnawing on things.  He prefers sweets, but will chew on anything he deems to look tasty, or that offends him to look at.  That is to say he’s not too picky.  A short, stocky thing, he relies on his magnificent facial locks to woo those around him.  He can usually be found wandering his natural habitat of dense forest or traversing rocky mountains.

Oops a few minutes late and not even colored or named or described!

Hi! I have not introduced myself or anything so I am Max. I like to draw cute things. I am using this challenge to get back on track as I have not been drawing much lately. I plan to start out with characters I’m more comfortable with and slowly expand out to stuff outside my comfort zone. Nice to draw with you guys!

I absolutely love ‘The Godfather‘ trilogy, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘The Sopranos’ and everything else mob related, so a mafia bad guy was just a natural direction for one of these guys. Kinda silly, with a wink to Hammerhead and Tony Montana. 🙂

#2 Longbranch

| November 2, 2010 | 0 Comments

Name: Longbranch
Species: Human
Age/Sex/Race: 22/Male/Arbon
Main Goal: Find out why the Undomans are attacking his people and stop them.
Occupation: Hunter/Savior of the Arbon Race
Motivation: The loss of his village, family, way of life, and also he was ordered to.
Inner Need: Appreciation and respect.
Flaw: Not very bright, rushes into things. Poor deductive reasoning.
Good/Bad Habits: Follows orders and respects his elders, but frequently forgets things.
Secret: Used to steal to buy gifts for his various girlfriends.
Skills, Knowledge, Props: Has decent survival knowledge. Owns the Seeds of Willowmane, giving him various plant-related powers.
Quirks: Proudly wears a large brass belt-buckle he won in a wrestling match with a buddy and always brags about it.
Attitude: Grave
Dialogue Style: Uses several long pauses and discourse particles (umm, like, y’know). Very poor vocabulary.
Backstory/Description: Longbranch was born in the forest village of Willowat, one of the many villages of the tribal Arbon people. He was never very bright growing up, frequently forgot things and had a hard time making himself useful. One day, however, pale-skinned men, the Undomans, rose from their kingdom beneath the Forbidden Lake to march north and wage war on the Arbons. Longbranch’s village was struck by a shockingly well-equipped force, and amidst the chaos Longbranch was yanked into a nearby hut by the village chieftain. In desperation, the chieftain entrusted Longbranch with the Seeds of Willowmane, a pair of magical seeds created by the long-dead shaman Willowmane, which grow into a thick tangle of animate vines over the users hands, allowing them to be used to great effect in combat. The chieftain ordered Longbranch to find out why the Arbons were attacking and stop them, and without so much as a goodbye shoved him out the door into the dark forest. Longbranch instinctively fled the carnage of his village and began heading south, towards the Forbidden Lake.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I thought I would actually do a background with this one. Waaaay too much work. I think this shall be the standard amount of effort I will put into my drawings from here on out.
