#1 Chondra Flicker

| November 1, 2010 | 28 Comments

221 years old, and in servitude to Princess Lorne, Chondra is the soon to be Queen's messenger, bodyguard, whisperer, and anything else where descretion is of chief import. Chondra is, by birth, 3/4 fae due to an indiscretion by her grandmother - A fact Chondra loathes.

She has lived in court her entire life, and quickly rose in the ranks of whisper/messengers due to an uncanny ability to get into and out of near impenetrable places. Chondra is of the pixie caste; with insect wings, and with the ability to shrink in size. Resourceful, she enjoys a challenge, which her majesty is always willing to provide. She commands respect, admiration, and a touch of fear among those in court.

Though, a loyal subject, like all fae forced to serve the crown, Chondra resents the royalty that have cast her people in roles unbefitting their race and breed.

#1 – Blindsight

| November 1, 2010 | 4 Comments

Blindsight, of the Marginal MenThis is the first concept sketch for one of the three main characters of my new superhero title “Marginal Men”. I chose to participate here mainly to finally get myself to work on the story visually, and define the characters. This is the first one, although chronologically, he was invented second.

Tyson Reese grew up believing to be blind. Then, at 13 years old, he contracted a cataract, and darkened.

That was the day he first saw the sun rise.

Ty confided to his eye doctor, Dr. Helm, and together they found out that he had a unique mutation. Tyson had been born with a sort of active x-ray vision. His eyes were able to emit what Dr. Helm called “phased photons”, which could penetrate any matter, with one exception: if they went through matter that conventional photons – any form of light – were already passing through, there would be an interference, and Tysons’s vision could not see through.

That was why he had not been able to see: his vision was not able to pass his transparent pupil.

Tyson had to learn how to see completely anew, and realised the potential of his newfound power. Although he could not see like normal people (colour is still mostly a mystery to him), he understood that his vision was in most aspects far superior, after he had learned to control the depth of his vision.

Dr. Helm agreed to keep Tysons condition secret. He created a cover story about a new operation technique that had restored Tyson’s vision, and Tyson decided to use his power to heroic ends.

Since he could still not see through glass (mirrors appear black to him, windshields appear blackened out) he became a rescue firefighter, being able to see through thickest smoke effortlessly, in buildings where most of the windows had already burst from the heat. With a lot of protection from his captain who always suspected that something was odd about his eyes, but never doubted his heroic efforts and results, Tyson did ten years of service as a hero.

There was one problem though: he had to paint his gasmask black in order to be able to see and breathe. One day, he went into a burning building, trying to bring out a six-year-old boy, who had – by an odd coincidence – been terrorized by his alcoholic father with stories about the “bogeyman” who would come from burning hell and steal his face to replace his own, lost one.

The boy died, running from Tyson into the fire.

Tyson quit his job, devastated, altough he was cleared of any misconduct. But his heroic conviction still remained, and so he became a superhero, Blindsight, using his all-seeing eyes to follow criminals and find hidden evidence.

But when he tried to apply for membership in a renowned superhero group, he was sent away when they realized that he actually could not see through a common window, or tell how much milk was left inside a bottle without picking it up. They laughed about him, calling him “merely human” or a “limited power superhero”.

Frustrated, Blindsight began traveling the world and roaming the internet, searching for others like him: people with definitely superhuman powers, who were willing to use them for good. He founded what was to become known as “The Marginal Men”, a group of people caught between two worlds – not quite human, but not accepted as superhumans – and with “marginal” powers like himself.

#1 – Shath – Corrupt Grandmaster of Woodwinds

| November 1, 2010 | 4 Comments

Shath is a new character in the world and story of Art Geek Zoo: The Way of Sound.

During an encounter with a powerful Shrill, Shath became corrupted and is now the Shrill’s tomb/rebirth chamber guardian.

Before his final corruption, Shath was the in the aloof position of Grand Master Supreme of all woodwinds. Shath became further and further detatched from the music he should both teach and perform. Being such a powerful ally to control, Shath was the Shrill’s dream come true – at least initially. Shath’s well developed sense of bitterness to other musicians of high rank, and disdain for mystical instruments – even the one he carries – made it so the process of Shrill mind control simply converted Shath to their side completely.

Instead of being an order-following drone as a victim of Shrill mind control would normally be – Shath is an over-achieving never-stand-still minion too busy for his own good. The main effect this has on his superiors is that they send Shath on dangerous missions over and over in the hope that one of these days, Shath won’t make it back.

Shath is very stealthy, not too strong physically, but is a Grand Master in The Way of Sound and as such is a very formidable opponent. Shath’s flute, Khaz, was once a sentient mystical instrument but is now believed to have faded into dormancy, perhaps permanently.

Roadkill Santa

I don’t have my CeltSpace stuff together enough yet (still inking) and I am crunched for time. So I decided to use a few filler ideas.
This is the kind of Santa America needs right now! One that is honset, modern, jolly.

Imagine the ‘My Buddy’ dolls from the 80’s were cutesy androids, programmed to hang with their young owners. Now imagine that one powers on again after the apocalypse. Not one to break protocols, this unit is on a quest to seek out the young boy he once belonged to.

Whatever synthetic skin he’s got left is slowly deteriorating, getting sandblasted away. His goggles are less for necessity & more to just keep the grains out of the ball joints in his eye sockets. And the geiger counter is to make sure he doesn’t wander into a spot too radioactive & contaminate himself before finding his owner again. The stop sign pole with nails through it doubles as both protection & a walking stick.

My first go & I think I have a little something something I can roll into a story with a bit more thought. I’m thinking that it might be a neat challenge to try to make it gritty but still keep it all-(or at least ‘most’) ages. But certainly something worth looking into as I look ahead.

#1 Du Jour

| November 1, 2010 | 6 Comments

Deep in the Mississippi River Delta, there be strife – rival clans warring for the favor of all the spirits of animal, vegetable and mineral.  Ole’ duJour, he the last of his clan – that Roadkill Motorcycle club, every one cut low by Mama Houdoo’s boys and the evils in her thrall.  Now duJour ride alone, just him and his curse.  Po’ bastard can’t eat nothing but carrion, and then the spirit of the dead thing fill him up and take over.  He put a buzzard in his belly, he grow wings.  He pick over a possum, he see in the dark and hang from a tree.  Seen it my own self.  But duJour don’t care none ‘bout curses.  He use’em to satisfy the vengeance that occupy his mind.  Vengeance for the boys of the Roadkill MC.  For the shade of his ole lady.  And for his very own lost soul.

#1 Fredneck

If you want to make him happy, compliment his belt buckle.

Fredneck is a Southern Gentleman whose promiscuity has gotten him into trouble. Our intrepid investigators, Jimmy and the Hammer have discovered he’s been cheating and now his wife is going to take drastic action!

While all of the 30 characters I create this month MAY wind up in my webcomic Jimmy and the Hammer, Fredneck WILL be showing up in the future, so I don’t want to give away too much about his character.

Hope you like him! See you tomorrow!

#1 J33V3S

| November 1, 2010 | 2 Comments

Meet J33V3S. In the future, robots are given more and more rights, and eventually have the option to buy their freedom. J33V3S was one of the first robots to do so. J33V3S then proceded to go  into the detective business, and robots have natural deductive reasoning skills. So he’s basically a future emancipated robo-detective.

#1 Gorilla Ghost

| November 1, 2010 | 10 Comments

I have to cop to getting this one from watching The League on FX. They kept saying, “ghost monkey,” and it stuck in my head. Hence, the Gorilla Ghost.

Quick run-down: Carl Rundy is our character’s name, and he’s possessed by the ghost of a recently deceased gorilla. Haven’t decided on hero or villain, but that might come organically from the design.

Design: The idea of a gorilla ghost is absurdly Silver Age, but that just means it’s fun. I see GG as being mostly human looking, so Carl is the focus of the design. He’s hunched over, with knuckles dragging and calloused over due to walking on them. He’s in varying stages of undress, due to the perceived uncomfortability that a gorilla would have wearing a man’s clothes. The other, major part of the design is the ghostly avatar of the gorilla that echoes his pose. The gorilla can’t be seen by anyone, save mystics, but he’s always there, influencing Carl’s every thought and movement. Carl doesn’t get any benefits from the possession, like gorilla strength or the ability to climb or anything…he’s just stuck with the ghost. Poor Carl!

By the way, I can’t draw at all, so you’re all going to have to deal with sketches like this for 30 days, so 😛 thhpppppt!

(PS – I’m doing these almost exclusively on my iPhone, so I will reformat the images at a later date)

EDIT: Artist, Danny Kelly, took a swing at GG!  See above!

#1 King Golem

| November 1, 2010 | 0 Comments

Name: King Golem
Species: Golem
Age/Sex/Race: 578/Male/N/A
Main Goal: To perfect the formulae of golem creation.
Occupation: Wizard/Master Craftsman
Motivation: Obsession with perfection.
Inner Need: Perfection in all things.
Flaw: Pedantic and worries too much. Overly critical of self and others.
Good/Bad Habits: Never cuts corners or takes the easy way, but is also critical of others to the point of rudeness.
Secret: The gem on his chest holds his soul, and if it is broken, he’ll die. This includes all details of his former life, and the fact that he had one.
Skills, Knowledge, Props: A wizard of legendary power and knowledge. Extremely skilled in the craft of golems.
Quirks: Polishes his metallic body excruciatingly and reacts with anger to anyone marring or dirtying it.
Attitude: Cold, gruff.
Dialogue Style: Terse, strictly logical, gramatically flawless.
Backstory/Description: King Golem was once a dwarven wizard who would occasionally craft golems for use in his clan’s mines. Although the golems he crafted were very productive, he could only see the flaws in them, and strove to improve each consecutive one. One day, however, tragedy struck when one of his golems went berserk due to a tiny flaw in its creation. It killed four miners before it could be destroyed, after which King Golem was cast out of his clan. So great was his shame that he swore he would never again speak his dwarven name and he would never make another mistake as long as he lived. He carved out a secluded laboratory deep in the earth and labored on perfecting his golems until he grew old. Still unsatisfied with his golems and running out of time, he boldly modified his golem animation formulae to bind his soul into one. He has since lived for centuries in this form and has expanded his laboratory into a vast system of subterranean mines staffed by his scores of golems.

Alright, here’s number one. This has been my internet handle for years, but I’ve never drawn him or presented him as a character, though I have thought of it.

30 Characters Challenger: Ed Spradley

| November 1, 2010 | 0 Comments

Why am I doing this?  I have to be insane.  It’s not like I have the time.  One character in one day, maybe.  But for thirty days straight?  I can’t even stick to a diet or exercise for thirty days straight.  Too much of  “life” seems to always get in the way.  At least that sounds like a pretty good excuse, right?

“If something’s important, you make the time.”  (Thank you CAPT Montgomery Scott for that bit of wisdom)

I’m a dreamer who wants his feet to join his head in the clouds.  I’m the geekiest mind amongst my friends and family but don’t even measure up to the average geekiverse citizen.  And I’m a writer who only writes inside the safety of his own head.

Who I am, where I’m from, and what I do may be simple questions.  But my answers are a little too complicated.  At least that’s what my wife tells me.  My name is Ed Spradley.  I grew up in the wonderfully weird town of Austin, TX.  And I’m going to write 30 characters in 30 days.  (God help me.)

Ashmir, the Risen. If he looks like a bad dude, he is. Old and risen from the dead to conquer and all that. Kind of a soldier/mage ultra-villain. Beware.
